Changed from a 1:10 start.
Plenty of good seats available for this and the rest of the series. Can we get 35K average for the weekend? I’m doubting it unless the Cubs fans show up.
I loathe Sunday Night ESPN games. The announcers are pitiful. And there’s just something about the view that is really bad too.
They’re pretty bad, but it’s a rare occasion that I don’t have the mute button deployed no matter who’s doing the play by play these days. In my view, there’s no longer any such thing as a genuine play by play announcer. Today’s broadcasts are almost invariably performed by pitch men who are not at all unlike what were once termed, “hucksters.”
A few starts ago on Chicago’s south side, Shota got absolutely lit up. It was a thing of beauty watching ChiSox after ChiSox getting hits off of him….many were round-trippers. Let’s hope we have an encore performance out of Imanaga tomorrow night…..but I certainly wouldn’t bet the ranch on it. For the players and for the fans, these games vs the cubbies are the ones that matter most at this point. We need to beat these guys at least twice this weekend to extend their recent losing ways.
While significant in terms of historical context. Manfred sucked some of the life out of it when he shortened the divisional games and made us play the rest of the AL.
Right now I just want to win more than lose the rest of the way. Come to think of it I’d like to win B2B games. We haven’t done that for a bit correct?
After the game time was changed from afternoon to evening, the Cardinals recently ran a flash sale for this game only. $15 loge and $30 field box tickets. Unheard of in the past for a weekend Cubs game in August. But that is where they are now.
I still remember in my college days paying $1.50 for decent grandstand seats in the old Busch. Damn, that was three ball parks ago!
It was $2.50 for a long, long time at Busch Memorial for general admission. I almost always went that route and typically ended up with a pretty good seat.
For a kid it wasn’t much of a challenge working your way down from the general admission seats, But a lot of times we didn’t have the extra dollar and had to go with bleacher tickets. That had its own separate gate and concourse fenced off from the rest of the park. There were a few ways to get through though, and we were experts. We usually had money for a dog but maybe not a soda. Had to save a quarter for the bus to get home. I can remember being 12 and going downtown to the game on the bus with my 14 year old cousin and 10 year old brother. All summer long, mowed lawns to get up the money.
Damn those were good days! I know everybody always thinks the days of their youth were the best ever, but doggone it in my case it was true!
Seems like we never fare well on those national broadcasts. Let’s hope tomorrow will be better with Sonny pitching… Nothing worse than losing to the Cubs.
Yeah, once you were familiar with the lay of the land at the ballpark and the day to day operating procedures of the seat police you normally had near to zero problems planting your backside into a loge or even a field box seat. You had to use a little patience and wait ’til about the 2nd or 3rd inning and then surreptitiously work your way down to the prime seating areas of the ballpark. We were a close knit gang of young Bob Ueckers back then…Haha!
In regards to seating, I noticed that the box from yesterday’s game claimed a sliver north of 40K. I’m guessing that may be somewhat close to accurate but don’t kid yourself…attendance has taken a substantial hit this season. My source says the Cardinals are 11th out of 15 NL teams in attendance this season and that’s awful for what was once referred to as Redbird Nation and the BFIB. Maybe it’ll get Willie Jr’s attention and he’ll see to it that a better product is placed on the field. Let’s hope so anyway.
Yeah it was $2 for me to sit in the outfield cheap seats at Milwaukee County Stadium back in the day. It was my thing to attempt to ruffle the feathers of opposing team’s relievers out there in the bullpen. Looking back, I’m sure I got on the nerves of everyone out there. It would have been a dream come true to see my Cardinals play a game there.

Pugs, you didn’t attend the World Series in 1982?
I actually went to a Brewers/Twins game in County Stadium in 1983 at age 15 while wearing my Cardinals cap. It was not well received but fortunately I was sitting between my dad and his fellow Army buddy from Vietnam so I wasn’t hassled too bad. We were sitting about 15 rows behind the Brewer dugout and I remember getting a good look at Ted Simmons.
In my view, Busch Memorial gets a lot of undue criticism and eveyone that I know who used to attend a lot of games there says that they miss it. Yeah, it was hot and the playing surface was manufactured by a local outfit that made all sorts of other stuff that’s not conducive to living organisms, but the old concrete and steel bowl had plenty of upsides. There was a decent view of the playing field anywhere in the ballpark. The precast arch shaped concrete overhangs gave it am exclusive architectural flavor that dovetailed in nicely with the downtown area of StL. It held over 50K loyal Cardinal fans and was enclosed on all sides, so when the Redbirds were threatening with a rally against an arch rival the place literally felt like an earthquake was occuring along the New Madrid fault. The whole place shook. I mean, it could get incredibly unruly and loud and was no bargain whatsoever for visiting teams to play in. And they played Ernie Haye’s rally organ instead of the obnoxious and annoying garbage that they constantly blare over the loudspeakers at the current venue. In any case, I’m probably just getting long in the tooth and sentimental, but I’ll take Busch Memorial Stadium tenfold over the current Redbird venue anytime.
Ugh, an ESPN Sunday Night game. Horrible views and horrible announcers.
Plus the Mets are leading Milwaukee 5-1 in the 5th at County Stadium. Looks like the Cubs will gain a game after tonight and be back to only four games out.
Tonight’s game will be replaced by a lot of worthless jibber-jabber coming from the managers in their respective dugouts and a player or two in the field equipped with an earpiece. Count on it.
UPDATE: Mets now lead Milwaukee 5-3. And it’s in the 4th inning, not the 5th.
