3:10 p.m.
LHP José Quintana (4-5, 3.38) vs. RH Merrill Kelly (10-5, 2.81)
BSM // KMOX
Also BSSO and BSSW+August 20, 2022 at 11:55 pm #196711Easily our toughest Dback test. I hope Quintana is on his game.
August 20, 2022 at 11:56 pm #196712A dual sweep by the Cubs and us would be sweet!!
August 21, 2022 at 12:10 am #196713C27, another things is the Phil haven’t exactly torn it up lately either. That might help if the Brewers catch fire later.
August 21, 2022 at 1:47 am #196714Pujols says he’s going to retire at the end of the year.

August 21, 2022 at 10:07 am #196737I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen today’s AZ. starting pitcher work, but his numbers certainly do look good in ’22. I happened to notice that he didn’t make his Big League debut until he was 30 years old. I have no idea why that is, but I found that fact to be a little odd. In any case, if the Redbirds continue to swing the bats like they have in recent games, they should be able to wear the RHP’er down and hang some runs up on the board. Furthermore, I’d like to see the Redbird manager shoe horn Donovan into the line-up and hopefully have Eddie slide over to the SS position with Gorman manning up at 2B. At any rate, obviously I’m hoping that this train has no brakes and the Redbird Express keeps rolling.

August 21, 2022 at 10:55 am #196745Does anybody know precisely what “business matters” require Molina’s presence in PR?
I should think that earning the $9,000,000 being paid to him by the Cardinals would be the principal business matter he needs to attend to.
August 21, 2022 at 11:10 am #196746France,
The other thread said something about the basketball team he owns in Puerto Rico was playing for the championship and he felt like he needed to be there. I have no idea if that’s the reason or not.r/Esteemed Rat
August 21, 2022 at 11:13 am #196747CardFrance…The StL. newpaper indicated that he traveled to PR to attend a championship game of a basketball team of which he is the principal owner. Other speculation has it that he inexplicably awoke and was instantly and entirely overcome with the notion that he’s Mark Cuban…Makes sense to me.
August 21, 2022 at 11:42 am #196749TD: Thank goodness he’s got his priorities straight. Here I had this old-fashioned notion that when somebody pays you wheelbarrows full of money the least you can do is show up for work. Silly me!
August 21, 2022 at 12:13 pm #196752CardFrance…Yeah, I guess he figured that since he’d be placed on the restricted list and wouldn’t be paid for the 2 or 3 games he missed, it’d be okay. Nothing surprises me anymore.
August 21, 2022 at 12:31 pm #196754Yadi has obviously done a lot for this organization over the years and will wear a red jacket one day but leaving your team in the middle of the stretch drive to go watch a basketball team you are affiliated with, if that is indeed what happened, is just poor leadership. It does not set a good example to the younger players. There is no other way to spin it. The front office didn’t have to sign off on this either.
August 21, 2022 at 12:33 pm #196755The Bayamon Vaqueros…..think about that. Yadi left the team and organization he’s been with for 20 years high and dry, in the heat of a pennant race, to see a Bayamon Vaqueros basketball game. Yeah, I know he owns them, but I have little doubt that one of our Woman’s pro teams here in the States could absolutely drill Yadi’s Vaqueros squad. I wish one of our ladies team would issue a challenge to these Bayamon Vaqueros…….but I highly suspect that Yadi would back down.
August 21, 2022 at 12:43 pm #196756Word on the street is TCN will be welcoming a new sponsor today. NoDoz will be a primary partner throughout the remainder of the pennant drive. The play-by-play booth will be chock-full of free samples.
Hi, Pugs. How are you today?
August 21, 2022 at 12:51 pm #196758gscottar…I’d say it’s primarily a case of poor judgement. Incredibly poor. And I’m not sure anyone on this ballclub will any longer afford him any deference in the area of leadership going forward. If the scuttlebutt regarding why his absence is indeed a reality, he displayed precisely what he feels is the order of importance. As for the FO, I’m not at all certain they signed off on anything. My perception is that they had no choice.
August 21, 2022 at 12:53 pm #196759Ha ha! Very funny, Euro Dandy. I’m ready to try almost anything to keep me alive and kicking up in the booth. To fall asleep in the booth on successive nights is almost as neglectful as Yadi leaving the team to catch a Vaqueros bush league basketball game. I don’t even think Harry was ever caught taking a little siesta up in the booth. Well today is a day game, so that coupled with a handful of NoDoz should keep me as spry as they come.
August 21, 2022 at 12:59 pm #196760Pugs…Haha! Any time the Redbirds are playing in a time zone that is two hours behind CDT, I have no choice other than to fit in a little 2 hour nappy time during the afternoon before first pitch if I at all want to see the final out of that night’s game. It’s been that way for a while. Come to think of it, I do that even in the winter…I simply don’t get out of the box and down the line like I once did. Oh well, it’s nice to be able to doze off on demand. Accept of course, when I’m driving…
August 21, 2022 at 1:08 pm #196761A little off topic but I am not sure if I have shared with you guys that my favorite baseball player of all time was actually not a Cardinal. He was a Yankee. None other than Henry Louis Gehrig. I have read several books about him and watched all of the documentaries. Why you ask? Well, he was obviously one of the best players of all time but I think it was the way he conducted himself with class and elegance and of course his legendary work ethic. He was the alter-ego to his more famous teammate Babe Ruth, who would spend every night drinking, eating, and chasing women then trying to play the next day with a hangover.
Why do I bring this up? Because I think we have our own version of the Iron Horse on this roster in Paul Goldschmidt. A big strapping first baseman who comes ready to play almost everyday, crushes baseballs on a regular basis, but off the field is a true gentleman. His personality is so introverted he comes across as downright shy just like Gehrig was. He is so humble that when he joined the Cardinals, instead of asking the “legendary” Luke Gregerson for his number 44, Goldy deferred and took number 46. I thought that spoke volumes about him. He may never attain all of the stats Gehrig did but he may be the closest the Cardinals ever come to having a version of the Iron Horse.
August 21, 2022 at 1:16 pm #196762Retirement the last couple years has been very good for me on the late games. I still need as much sleep, but usually make it up the next morning if necessary. It’s nice to not be a servant to the alarm clock.
If the Yadi situation is what it seems to be, it is perplexing and disappointing.
August 21, 2022 at 1:18 pm #196763I don’t know if we’ve ever had back-to-back posts as wonderful as these last two during all of The Cardinal Nation’s storied existence. Well done, TD & Scotty!
Ooops, looks like Euro Dandy slid in a post on us…..well, let’s make it the best back-to-back-to-back posts ever.
August 21, 2022 at 1:31 pm #196764Good comparison gscott. I always liked reading about Gehrig too. I am a lefty who preferred playing 1B growing up, so maybe that is what drew me in as a fan. Given that, no surprise Goldy is my favorite Cardinal now. I love watching his defense probably more than his hitting. I get a kick out of people who say Goldy needs to get a personality and enjoy the game more. What they don’t like about him is what I do like. It’s also fine to be an extroverted emotional player, but no need to choreograph or fake it. For Goldy, it would be faking.
August 21, 2022 at 1:40 pm #196765Speaking of the Yankees, they retired Paul O’Neill’s #21 uni today…..which kind of surprised me. Paul played a decent chunk of his career with Cincy and then of course had quite a few excellent years with N.Y. But did they warrant having his uni hanging next to the likes of Gehrig, Mantle, Ruth and Jeter for an eternity?
August 21, 2022 at 1:53 pm #196768gscottar…With recent events, I’ve been routinely checking the top 10 all time leaders in various power categories. What I find so incredibly amazing about Gehrig is that he collected 1995 RBI’s in 9665 PA’s and places 7th all time in career RBI’s. Of the top 10 all time career leaders in RBI’s that’s over 2500 less plate appearances than Pujols, Musial, Aaron, Cobb, Bonds and Rodriguez. Ruth had 10,626, Anson 11,331 and Foxx with 9,677 PA’s. No one comes close to his number of RBI’s with so few PA’s. Gehrig was a genuine RBI Monster!
August 21, 2022 at 1:56 pm #196769Ian Happ with a dong in the bottom of the 1st off of Woodruff. Cubs jump out to the early 1-0 heading to the top of the 2nd. Steele on the hill for the Cubs.
And remember, the Brewers now go to Los Angeles for three games against the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium beginning Monday night.
