If there would be no blackouts, I would have no problem with $200 for a year of all the Cardinal games. That is less than what I will spend going to a single game in person. At a 4 hour drive, one way, I am not going to more than 2 games a year no matter what.
Churio took a bad route on a fly ball that kept the inning alive for the Mets to score 5 runs. He was always a CF but is playing LF. The ball probably had a lot of carry and he misjudged it. He makes it and it’s still a 4-3 Brewers lead. Just show how little things make a big difference.
Bob, IMO that is a 70 win team, at best. That is tanking. You are getting rid of your best, proven starting pitcher and keeping the worst. I am not totally against trading Contreras and Arenado if you can get rid of almost all of their salaries.
LA, do you believe the 4 players I mentioned have the ability to be really good major Leaguers? If so, how long does it take to unlock that potential with the correct coaching? That’s not to say that I think anyone but Bloom could put those pieces in place. I don’t trust Mo to do it. That’s why I said it was the optimistic view.
One of the interesting things I have heard is that Gibson spent a lot of time with the young pitchers talking to them and helping them. I would be willing to pick up his option to keep the mentorship. I agree with you, greyghost.
Unless Girsch provides some sort of expertise for the Cardinals, why keep him? Budget trimming should come from the front office, in addition to the roster. No need keeping legacies at this point. Not trying to be cold. Just want the best.
The rational view is that not picking up anyone for 2025 means the team will not be competitive next year. The optimistic view is that the Cardinals invest heavily in the development of players in the minors and major leagues (Gorman. Walker, Liberatore and McGreevey) and the Cardinals compete for a playoff spot.
If the Cardinals have to get rid of their expensive players to put the proper investment into development, then do it. However, they have the money already coming off the books to stay semi-competitive and make the needed improvements. I also believe the Cardinals will not get a good enough return from trading Contreras and Gray due to their age and contracts.
In addition, the Cardinals could cut payroll by around $30 million for 2025. All they need to do is not sign any free agents, not pick up any options and let all of their expiring contracts walk.
Mikolas is a sunk cost. I’m not interested in saving the investors some money. I AM interested in making the team better without getting free agents….unless the team wakes up and decides to bite the budget bullet for a year or two to fill team needs.
Obviously, that is not happening.
If the Cardinals are in such a dire condition that they have to get rid of some of their best players, the immediate future looks bleak. In 1 year, Mikolas and Matz will come off the books. Gray gets another increase but they could come up with some more savings, if need be.
I think the Cardinals should keep Gray. They need to get rid of Mikolas. I think they could have a rotation of Gray, Gibson, Fedde, Pallante and McGreevey. That would be just as good as this year’s. Gibson and Fedde could be deadline trade candidates if some of our AAA pitchers seem ready by mid season. Use Matz and Liberatore in the pen.
If we are not going to be aggressive to fix the team problems, what does it matter who the closer is? Trade Helsley for an upgrade somewhere.
Over a year after this topic started. Mo brought in 3 starters like he said he would. One was showing real good until about the all star break. One started slow and then pitched fairly decent. The third showed he could keep the team in games but has fallen apart in the second half. It’s going to be tough to pick up Gibson’s option if he doesn’t turn things around in the last month.
We really need 2 going into next season. I would go with Gray, Fedde and Pallante as 3. Mikolas seems done. Matz would be better out of the pen. Lynn and Gibson helped us this year but I don’t want to repeat this year. We might be able to get 1 from our minor leagues but really should use them for injury/performance replacements.
If Girsch is in charge of the analytics, he needs to go. It seems pretty apparent that the Cardinals either stink at it or they need to fire whoever is ignoring those analytics. Player development is also at a low. There is talent in the system but they aren’t performing.
I think Bling is wrong. They aren’t using analytics at all. Or maybe it’s just Marmol being the poor manager that he is.

Is Pallante trying to make a statement to the Cardinals? Ks Seager and Semien in the top of the 1st.
mud, Pham was traded by the Cardinals to the Rays for Genesis Cabrera, Justin Williams and Roel Ramirez.
Pads, unless I am missing something, about $16 million lower payroll in 2025 before signings and arbitration players.
