Cot’s doesn’t say Bill have him a new NTC. It says both the Rockies and Cardinals agreed that Arenado retained his original NTC after the trade. I suppose it is splitting hairs but I read it that Arenado would not have accepted a trade if he lost the NTC. I have never heard of someone losing their NTC if they waive it 1 time in the contract.
Bill didn’t offer it to Arenado. He already had the NTC from the original contract that he signed while with the Rockies. The only thing Bill agreed to do was accept the contract in the trade.
I think the decisions came down to the amounts the players were asking for. Since the arbitration judge can only select one amount or the other, the amount requested becomes key.
The Cardinals filed at $2.45 million for Noot and $2.85 million for Donovan. Obviously, the Cardinals thought Donovan should be paid more than Noot.
IMO, if the Cardinals need to pay a little more of his salary to get a good prospect, they should. Let’s say they have to send $25 million. They would have to pay Arenado more than that this year with the uncertainty that he might decline more and be untradable. If they trade him with a one year $25 million hit, he is gone from the books for 2026 and 2027 and they get a prospect that might pan out. That allows the Cardinals to see what they have, and need, to rebuild this team quickly.
I don’t understand how having a pitcher with Leahy’s 2024 MLB stats on the 40 man roster is “an insult” to fans. He pitched for the Cardinals in both 2023 and 2024. He didn’t pitch so poorly that he deserves to be cut, yet. It would be very easy to cherry pick and exclude 1 game in September, that was less than 5% of his season total innings pitched, and make his ERA look pretty good.
I know it has to be getting close to spring training. I can squint and see how the Cardinals could be the division winner.
Gorman and Walker return to 2023 hitting performance. Winn takes another step forward. Arenado rebounds. Contreras continues to hit. Donovan and Burleson hit. Noot stays healthy. Mikolas either pitches decent or is cut loose. A rotation of Gray, Fedde, Pallante, McGreevy and ??? proves to be good. Matthews stepping up if Fedde gets traded. Simple.
The payroll side of it I could see being a problem. I didn’t think Woo was that big of a talent considering he was never a top 100 prospect. However, after reading the scouting report from a couple of years ago, I can see the talent. If only….
Just saw a hypothetical trade that sounded interesting to me and wanted feedback. Arenado, Liberatore and $5 million cash to the Mariners for Bryan Woo. I like the idea. Thoughts?
jj, I agree. They are needed until the Cardinals can develop better players in the other positions. By that time, the Cardinals may have used up their useful major league years. OBP still means a lot to me. A well-rounded lineup is the most dangerous.
In other words, if he succeeds, Bloom gets the credit. If he fails, Mo gets the blame. Once again, perception and context means a lot.
We need a special bat and a TOR pitcher in the organization. The problem with having this high of a pick is that we still have the same people drafting unless Bloom is going to have a large say in that pick.
At this point, the Cardinals should be trying to make trades based on getting rid of poor positional fits and low quality players than getting rid of salaries or shedding salary. They should also consider trading pieces with short term control if they can get a good haul in return. It’s time to get back to the basics of how to build a team, not save money.
The Cardinals seem to have forgotten that it is better to trade a player 1 year too early than 1 year too late. When you throw a poor development system on top, you get a poor team.
Well…they were entertaining comic relief, if you count the front office woes. They just weren’t entertaining playing baseball.
Mud, Donovan is needed for 2B until Gorman starts hitting. Or he is the super sub if Saggese is the regular 2Bman.
If the Cardinals are only losing $17 million of their TV revenue, they should be done cutting salary just for the savings. It’s time to make decisions based on fielding the best team within their budget. Don’t handcuff the team for the future and make smart trades. Start turning the farm system around and develop what we currently have.
That said, if the Cardinals could trade Mikolas while eating only 50% of his salary, they should do it. I think he is done.
I am concerned there is not enough “ready” talent to fill holes if we continue cutting salaries.
If we trade Gray and decline the options on Lynn and Gibson, what is the starting rotation? If we trade Contreras or Arenado and Goldy walks, what is going to be the lineup?
I know it would be a rebuild but how long will it take to be competitive? Does the scorched earth route make things happen quicker?
If the Cardinals operate on the idea of saving money first, they will be stuck with crappy players. I hope they operate on the idea of getting rid of crappy players and take whatever money savings they can get.
