    Paid - Annual

The day after MLB.com and The Athletic wrote about renewed trade talks or not about Nolan Arenado, the Post-Dispatch reports that other teams believe the Cardinals are open to trading Erick Fedde. No details are provided about who and when or if any talks have been held.

    I’ve got a rumor.
“Fedde at bat, Matz on deck, Arenado in the hole”

Maye we can do 40 pages on this one too.

It won’t take 40 pages for Fedde. He is on a cheap salary, doesn’t have a NTC, and doesn’t have an accepted trade list that he will renege on.

This may sound strange but Fedde is probably the most sought after and easily tradeable veteran on the Cardinal roster. You could argue it is Helsley but recent history suggests that closers don’t bring back the prospect haul that you think they will.

A Tommy Edman type for CF would be a nice return.

Maybe it’s because he is a flash in the pan, and hasn’t earned those rights as a player, similar to the priveledges Bill offered to Arenado.

Bill didn’t offer it to Arenado. He already had the NTC from the original contract that he signed while with the Rockies. The only thing Bill agreed to do was accept the contract in the trade.

Nado agreed to waive his existing NTC w/COL, to allow the trade. Bill gave Nado his current NTC and an extra year. Both NTC’s are listed on Cots.

Way Dewitt is trying to cut payroll you would think the Cardinals were at the bottom of MLB in attendance….though they may be after this year

Retaining Fedde, and others, is intended to help w/attendance in the short term. That seems to be our FO’s approach, today, although “rival clubs” have a differing opinion.

Cot’s doesn’t say Bill have him a new NTC. It says both the Rockies and Cardinals agreed that Arenado retained his original NTC after the trade. I suppose it is splitting hairs but I read it that Arenado would not have accepted a trade if he lost the NTC. I have never heard of someone losing their NTC if they waive it 1 time in the contract.

I understand the “grandfathered in” approach, but I view Arenado’s COL NTC as a reliquished legal right, that was waived. I’m also willing to call you right, to avoid splitting hairs, because we agree that the power of a NTC resides in the veto.

Nado wasn’t coming to StL without his NTC, so Bill had to endorse his future NTC. I view that as offering a new NTC, and the new contract they hammered out during the trade.

Arenados next club will also have to endorse a NTC, or here comes the veto. I can’t lay Arenados current NTC at COL’s feet, Bill had to offer the same NTC or walk away.

“while retaining his no trade” belongs to Bill, and the next club 🤞

As forsch said, when a player is traded, so is his contract, all elements of it. It comes with him to his new team. The Cardinals had no choice but to accept the no trade protection if they wanted Arenado. It is not a “use it once then lose it”. StL is obviously still bound by it, or he would be gone already.

It is worth noting that Arenado (and every other player) automatically gets no-trade protection after 10 MLB years, the last five with the same team. Nolan will get this unnecessary “double protection” if still here at the end of the 2025 season.

If we want to keep talking Arenado, let’s move it to that thread. After all, there is so much to say about Fedde… 😉

    You took the bait.

The only way I see Fedde gone before ST ends is that the Cardinals can’t get rid of Nado and have now pivoted to someone who can be moved to save $$$. I don’t really buy that but ok.

Agreed. It was about as thin of a rumor as one could be.
