1TD, I don’t think there are any SPs in HOF with a sub .500 record. There are a few with a win % under .540. Nolan Ryan and Phil Niekro are 2. Gaylord Perry had a .542 W-L%. That is just a quick look.
1TD, wins and losses are a poor way to judge effectiveness. Here are the number of runs that the other team scored while Mikolas was in the game in his losses over 2019, 2021 and 2022:
1 run – 4 games with a loss
2 runs – 6 games with a loss
3 runs – 8 games with a loss
4 runs – 3 games with a loss
5+ runs – 10 games with a lossUnless he is supposed to pitch like 1968 Bob Gibson every year, he was above average in 2018-2022. He has been below average in 2023 and 2024.
I don’t want the Cardinals to keep Fedde for the next 5 years. I hope he provides 1 1/2 years of really good starting pitching and then the Cardinals have prospects ready to take the baton.
1TD, the Cardinals got 4 good years out of Mikolas after he went overseas to learn how to pitch to major league hitters. Why can’t Fedde do the same? He has been fairly consistent all season. In 9 of his 21 starts this year he has allowed 1 run or less.
If all the Cardinals gave up was Edman, I love this deal. Sure, I will miss Edman’s versatility but he is not Mookie Betts 2.0. The Cardinals now have Gray, Fedde, Gibson, Lynn and Mikolas for their rotation. They can keep Pallante up for a 6 man rotation or keep him stretched out in Memphis. If the Cardinals could get rid of Mikolas and his salary, I would be ecstatic. (Not happening)
Obviously, Pham is only here until the end of the year.
1TD, you have to look at 2024 from Fedde to see why the Cardinals made the deal. He had 7 wins for the White Sox which was over 25% of the team total. He was 7-4 with a 3.11 ERA. He went to the KBO in 2023 and worked on his pitch mix. He was the 2023 KBO MVP. Also, he was a first round draft pick of the Nationals in the 2014 draft.
Maybe the Cardinals tried to unload Gallegos’ salary to take on these other salaries. Gsc, maybe you are correct. I want to see all the details.
The ONLY way I could see the Cardinals getting by with only Edman is that they agreed to take on all of the salaries of Fedde and Pham.
Has anyone heard that the Cardinals are not giving up anything else? MLB Traderumors said that Nitghtengale indicated that the deal included prospects from both the Dodgers and the Cardinals.
MLB Traderumors is reporting that a deal trading Edman to the Dodgers, Vargas from the Dodgers to the White Sox and Fedde to the Cardinals is done.
They are saying the source is Nightengale from USA Today.
Bike Mike, I hope you don’t really stop in Springfield, IL and expect to see a AA game. You might be waiting a long time.
I wonder if Pujols could come “coach” Gorman for a few games. He always seemed to have a positive effect on hitters on the team.

Fedde is intriguing, to me. I would like to see him come to the Cardinals if they could acquire him without giving up very much.

I live over 3 hours away from the stadium. A lot of the time I will drive down the day of the game and drive home when the game is over. It would be inconvenient for any rescheduled game.
I think Pujols would make a good hitting coach. He always seemed to help players when he played and the teams seemed to hit better when he was present. I know some of that was the fear of facing him by other teams changed they way they pitched to hitters around him. However, you would always see him talking to other players about hitting.
When the entire team has been hitting so poorly, it sticks in my mind that the problem has to land closer to the coaching. Something is wrong with the entire system, not just the hitters.
Shady, I would not. Arenado is outhitting Burleson in every way against RH pitching. Check out their splits for 2024 at Baseball Reference.
Going to today’s game. My wife has parking lined up for Starr lot. What can anyone tell me about that lot? I usually park in the stadium west parking deck.
Flores runs a very analytics heavy operation. The cigar chompers who evaluated by watching a player play are long gone. Now its gun groupies and clipboard cadets and gathering data and crunching numbers. It doesn’t work obviously, but Flores is one of Mo’s boy wonders. It doesn’t matter how epic of a flop his latest 1st rounder is, we will suffer through Mo’s Herculean efforts to make something of him for years to come. We know the drill by now even though some still want to believe.

And why do we stink at throwing out base Steelers? Only 3 all year is also near the bottom. 2 or 3 teams in MLB have fewer. That is said to be on the pitcher as much as the catcher, but whatever. Why do we stink at it?
Correction, Herrera stinks at it. He has allowed 15 SBs in 129.0 innings behind the plate with 0 CS. Contreras has allowed 6 SBs in 154.0 innings behind the plate with 3 CS.
Teams do not run on the Cardinals with Contreras behind the plate.
Obviously, Burleson is not able to “prove” he can hit at the major league level. He has been given an opportunity to show something but all he has shown is that his bat is not special. I wish he would show something but I’m not going to pretend that he has at the major league level, so far.
Carlson hasn’t hit enough to be a regular, either. He has had a longer leash because he is a good fielder.
If Burleson could field like Edman, I might be impressed with him. When he is limited, defensively, I am not impressed. He has not shown enough, offensively, to impress me. I hope he can live up to your hype but I am not holding my breath.
The Cardinals have too many players with more promise than Burleson for me to get excited about him.
