March 24, 2025 at 9:48 pm #277973Nice…I get the opening day first pitch comment of the ’25 regular season. That’ll be a trivia answer someday…I’m famous!
March 24, 2025 at 10:58 pm #277975And the big question is:
What’s everybody having for din-din on Opening Day?
March 24, 2025 at 10:59 pm #277976Do we think Sonny will actually make this start?
March 25, 2025 at 7:55 am #27797814NyquisT
ParticipantGood question Z. If he doesn’t the Cards will immediately callup Mathews to start, which will become his first of ten straight opening day starts for him.
March 25, 2025 at 10:13 am #277985Ah, game threads. Life is worth living again.
March 25, 2025 at 11:43 am #277987Alright, just signed up for another year of free mlb.tv through the T-Mobile promo they do every year. I am ready for another season.
Do not have high expectations, but looking forward to seeing if some of the young guys can show promise. Are Scott and McGreevy the real deal? Will Walker and Gorman get untracked? Will we see some of the other young arms this year?
As for din-din Thursday, I have no idea. We do not plan out the weekly meals, but have a bit of a backlog from the freezer that the Lovely Lady Bike got out yesterday. She said no cooking will be done this week as we are set for meals. One possibility is homemade vegie chili, plus we have homemade chicken noodle soup, some BBQ pulled pork and baked potato, and I think fajitas. Not sure what else but it will likely be one of those. Oh, I thinl the old classic sloppy joe’s is another possibility.
March 25, 2025 at 3:41 pm #277991My din-din will be a Hungry Man’s Turkey TV dinner, some deviled eggs, and a chocolate shake afterwards. Then it will be time for first pitch in Cincinnati. Then me and Whitey Herdog will be lighting up cigars most likely for the rest of the night as I’ll be watching the late game between the Cubs and DBacks from Arizona.
Friday’s din-din will be Catfish Fiddlers. However, it will not be a CCFF (Cardinals Catfish Fiddlers Friday) as the Redbirds do not play on Friday.
Oh, by the way, later tonight it will be an episode of Cannon.

March 25, 2025 at 4:50 pm #277996We went grocery shopping Sunday evening on the way back from Texas Roadhouse. MY wife found a couple of really nice looking pork chops, and I think that’s what I’ll be seeing again on the Thursday dinner table. I’m pretty sure we’ll be having baked beans, fries, and salad, also. And I’m pretty sure I’ll seeing a part of that same pork chop later in the week because the one’s we got on Sunday evening were pretty big. BTW, Rat, I think Texas Roadhouse was originally established in the Hoosier State, so there ought to be one somewhere in your neighborhood. You can get a pretty good 8 oz KC strip for about $18.00. which is reasonable by today’s pricing, plus you get two sides. And if you’ve got room for it, a baked potato, loaded, is a pretty good thing to add, in my opinion. Of course, you can take back home with you anything you can’t handle at one sitting.
It’s still somewhat shocking to me that a player like Jordan Montgomery will get paid $22.5M for bringing in the mail in 2025.
Some day, some way, this kind of absurdity must be corrected, IMO. I feel bad for the D-Back fans and also, the D-Back ownership who signed him up with the best of intentions. After the reports on Sonny Gray’s ‘health’, and the kind of spring he has had, I don’t understand why anyone could suggest that he will be starting on Thursday. Is this stupidity, or wishful thinking, or is there some sort of hidden agenda going on? I’m good with seeing Matthews get the start, but to me it seems like McGreevy has done more to earn it. I never liked Liberatore as a starter. I think he belongs in the bullpen and I think he could make some really big bucks working out of the pen. That’s just the way I’ve always felt about him. I hope he does well as a starter. Speaking of the bullpen, I’m still very interested to see what Riley Chun-Young O’Brien can do. He reportedly has some big, still unrealized, potential. He reminds me of Juan Eichelberger for a peculiar reason. Eichelberger’s first name is Spanish, his last name is German. But if you ever saw him, he looked like he had African biological heritage. Riley O’Brien sounds as Irish as a leprechaun. But you look at his middle name and you look at his photo, and you can see that he has Asian biological heritage. Our Country is truly the ‘melting pot’ that it is sometimes referred to.
March 25, 2025 at 6:19 pm #277997The weekly din-din plan for Thursday taped on the refrigerator chez CiF calls for shrimp and zucchini with pesto sauce over tagliatelle pasta, followed by lemon pudding.
I too am curious about this Sonny Gray start. From the bits I’ve read here and there He doesn’t seem ready to be opening day starter.
Neither am I optimistic about this season. But hey, it’s baseball, and it’s back, and Ill be here in front of my screen as usual.March 25, 2025 at 6:20 pm #277998Love those old “Cannon” episodes. That is one program I have not seen a lot, but they are great when I get a chance to watch ‘em. There is a free streaming channel called “Pluto” where you can see a lot of good old dramas like “The Fugitive”, “Streets Of San Francisco”, “Barnaby Jones”, “Perry Mason”, “Ironside”, “Mannix”, “Rockford Files”, Hawaii Five-Oh” etc. I am often watching an episode of one of those during my early morning workout.
But lately my wife has gotten me in to some new shows. I have been also catching “1923” and some other programs from this century that are very well done and can get quite riveting.
Okay, enough of that. On to Cardinal baseball. I too hope Libby can make it as a starter. Seems to have the natural physical gifts to be a real good starter, but to date he has done better out of the ‘pen. I hope we give him a good shot at a starter role – run him out there in the regular rotation for a couple of months or more.
March 25, 2025 at 9:20 pm #278005Ideally, whoever Bloom might be thinking is a keeper should start every day at whatever position he is a keeper at. Find out if he can play. Is his D good enough? Can he hit righties and lefties? Is he overly streaky? Can he pull himself out of a skid? Is he durable? Does he wear down? But that will not happen. It will be a three ring circus out there day after day as the wonks play their matchup game with no concern for the human factor. A result of the perpetual churn will be a dysfunctional offense and bad defense. But we don’t have expectations, so might as well sit back and see what happens.
We are not doing the opening day family bbq this year, so no jumbo dogs for din din. We will see what happens there too. As to catfish fiddlers, I never could find them around here. Now with King Edwards closed I can’t even find catfish fillets anywhere close. I can get a chipotle noodle bowl though.
March 25, 2025 at 10:18 pm #278009Yeah, the guy that ran King Eddie’s told me back around the holidays that he and his wife had decided it was time to retire. He also said there was going to be a new proprietor who would offer up a similar bill of fare that included fried catfish. Whether or not it’ll be any good remains to be seen. I’ve driven by the location several times since they’ve closed and it was obvious that work crews were inside getting the location up to snuff for the new ownership. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the catfish is as good or better as the previous ownweship.
March 25, 2025 at 10:29 pm #278011Whenever I think of Cannon, I think of that Lincoln Mark lV that he used to drive. That was a sweet ride! A guy could really lay that power 6 way seat all the way back and ramble down the road with a laid back “Detroit Lean”…And that solid piece of American iron had a hood that extended as far as did CF at the Polo Grounds…Haha!
March 25, 2025 at 11:16 pm #278023When I was a kid my friends dad had the 4 door version of that car with suicide doors. His mom had a Mercury that had an inward sloping electric rear window that slid down behind the back seat.
March 25, 2025 at 11:25 pm #278025Yeah, those were all real cool rides. The only problem was that you couldn’t pass a gas station in one of them. I had a real nice ’74 Buick Electra 225 that had about 15 ash trays…One of those ashtrays was about the same size as a bathroom sink and all 15 of them came with a cigarette lighter…Haha!
March 26, 2025 at 12:17 am #278026Well, baseball’s supposed to be fun and with the regular season about to get underway, what better way to have a little fun than to offer up some Big League baseball trivia?
So, to get us all up to real game speed, who is the following quote attributed to?
“I only had two pitches, fast and faster. And when I was at my best I could throw it through a car wash and never get it wet.”
Hint; The correct answer ain’t Phil Niekro…
March 26, 2025 at 12:41 am #278027Sheesh…I was just looking at a web-site that had that old photo of Brooks posing with his 16 Gold Glove trophies. With the purported price of gold being at about $3K per ounce, Ft. Knox has nothing on The Human Vaccuum Cleaner…At any rate, the Redbird IF of ’82 was a sight to behold, but I’m not too sure if they were as airtight as that Oriole IF of Robinson, Belanger, D. Johnson and Powell. It’s little wonder that the O’s had all those 20 game winners.
March 26, 2025 at 12:03 pm #2780361td?
Was it Bob Feller? Nolan Ryan? Bob Tewksbury? And today is the weekly trip to the Gasthof, the Amish restaurant. Fried chicken, meatloaf, fish, mashed potatoes/gravy, green beans, noodles, dressing, maybe sweet potatoes, and sweet iced tea. Then for dessert some of that cherry cobbler and/or some vanilla soft serve ice cream.
March 26, 2025 at 12:25 pm #278037According to the Athletic the Twins ownership has $425 million in Debt tied to the team, and they are not getting a lot of buyers at their $1.7 Billion asking price…sounds like the fans are not real happy with their Ownership either.
March 26, 2025 at 4:32 pm #278048No, Rats, but good guesses! Especially Tewksbury…Haha!
March 26, 2025 at 6:03 pm #278056I believe the quote is from Astro’s pitcher JR Richards who career was way too short. Loved their multicolored horizontal striped uniforms.
March 26, 2025 at 6:35 pm #278058Rats din-din fare when he goes out sounds like one of those “Man vs Food” episodes. It looks like he just says “bring me the entire left side of the menu, please”. 😀 In my younger days I could put away quite a bit, but anymore I can’t do that. Too much volume and I feel terrible. I will even make only a half sandwich now and then for lunch – take a slice of bread and cut it in half. Back in the day I would have two sammy’s at times.
Good trivia question. I will try Lou Brock’s nemesis, Bob Veale.
March 26, 2025 at 6:54 pm #278059Wonder what the reception will be from the home crowd when Arenado and bowtie will be like? Hopefully respectable seeing as one wants to be here (sort of) and the other is outgoing.
March 26, 2025 at 6:59 pm #278060Oh, and I will predict this one to be a 7-1 defeat, with the Redbirds falling behind early and never really competing to the disappointment of most of the opening day patrons.
In fact I will say we will be down 3-0 before we even get a chance to hit.
