Not by very much. Taking one of Gorman or Donovan out of the lineup in favor of Carlson weakens the offense much more than the defense is weakened with Gorman at second.
I honestly see Donovan getting most of his at bats as the DH.
Maybe we could make Gorman the center fielder.😉
JJ, the eye test tells me that Edman is one of the best in center. That is why I have been backing the idea to play him there. Having Edman in center as the regular starter with Carlson getting the other starts is the best combination defensively and offensively. That is the way the Cardinals try to get the most wins. If Carlson’s bat comes around, then you rethink what the team needs to do with the lineup.
Why would the Cardinals take one of their best OBP guys and limit his plate appearances?
Brian, don’t forget that Edman and Carlson have relatively close career numbers hitting.
If Edman is the best defensive SS in baseball, there would be a lot more talk about him from media and those in the game.
Carlson has had 1 GOOD season in the minors and 1 fairly good season in the majors. He has some raw ability but hasn’t harnessed it. The question is whether or not he ever will.
But he won’t be.
Nate, maybe you should look at his minor league numbers and not judge him by only his first attempt at major league hitters. He seems to have swing and miss stuff and adjusts to the level he is at after a period of time. He MIGHT turn out to be a good pitcher after all.
One concern that I have is that he allowed all 6 inherited runners to score in 2023.
Actually, if I understand correctly, the Dodgers have to fund 95% of the deferred money at the beginning of the contract. They can’t put off the expense until the time the deferrals start.
I heard them talking on MLB Radio this morning about the Ohtani contract. If I understood them correctly, they use the present value of the deferred money and come up to the $460 million figure. For the luxury tax, that would be a $46 million hit every year for the next 10 years.
One of the negatives is that the Cardinals would be limited on how much the salary can go down from year to year. Therefore, he will be close to his current salary for the extension. I’m not sure he will be worth that much in 3 years. Based on current players and expiring contacts, he does fit in the salary structure.
I think Yadi is around to improve the clubhouse vibe and teach Contreras how to call a game.

I have no problem with Gray on a 4 year deal. I don’t like giving up our 2nd pick, though. I also want another top pitcher. I know the Cardinals are just positioning the team for the prospects to take over in a year or 2. However, they would be better off with 2 top of the rotation pitchers to anchor the staff and start filing in the prospects next year. Keep the pressure to perform off of them and figure out exactly who can be a top starter.
November 27, 2023 at 8:44 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #238400BW, there is reason to believe he won’t improve in the OF: if he is only a DH. I don’t think it will happen while a Cardinal but if he only plays DH, he won’t improve. I still believe he winds up being a better than average defender in the OF. He just needs repetition, effort and coaching. I think McGee is a good coach and Walker seems willing to put in the work. That just leaves repetition.
Rumor on MLB on XM is that the Cardinals have an agreement with Sonny Gray.
LA, I would like to see Yamamoto/Montgomery and Ryu/Clevenger/Lugo. Then we MIGHT be looking at a post season run.
Sem Robberse in 2023 as a 21 year old:
AA – 4.93 IP/Start, 4.06 ERA, 8.7 K/9, 1.173 WHIP
AAA – 4.93 IP/Start, 4.84 ERA, 11.2 K/9, 1.783 WHIPHis first game pitched in AAA was also his first game in the Cardinals system after the trade. If you throw out that first game, here are his numbers for the final 7 games he pitched in.
4.57 IP/Start, 3.66 ERA, 12.1 K/9, 1.53 WHIP
In AA he allowed opponents the following slash: .213/.288/.386/.674 in 88.2 IP
In AAA in August in 5 games after the trade: .342/.469/.570/1.039 in 19.0 IP (<4IP/G)
In AAA in September in 3 games: .197/.290/.377/.667 in 16.1 IP (5.33IP/G)In September he had a 2.20 ERA, 1.225 WHIP, 13.8 K/9
I like the trend Robberse was on.
I did look at his numbers on baseball reference. I’m questioning what numbers you based your statement on.
November 21, 2023 at 11:01 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #237784I think I could go with O’Neill and Saggesse for Manoah.
bc, what was Robberse’s poor numbers?
When the guys let go perform as bad as they did, the bar is set real low for the replacements. Also, it’s not like these moves will knock the team out of the playoffs after a successful year. They lost 91 games with the guys they let go.
