4 K’s on Saturday, get’s benched for two games, and comes in off the bench and sends the first pitch he sees into the stands…
I’d give the game ball to Gorman, just because it was a walk-off.
That might be what is needed to turn this team around.
Yeah, thankfully, they walked the bases full for us to have a chance in the game.
And credit to Lynn for keeping us in the game despite all the traffic on the basebaths.
The pen once again was absolute money. “The Untouchable” aka “Kitty” was near perfect…..as usual. You guys want to flip a game ball Goldy’s or Gorman’s way…..I don’t have a problem with that, but my game ball is heading smack dab on a line towards the bullpen, where I bet Kitty snatches it out of thin air.
Yes, the bullpen was very good tonight, as most of the core relievers have been. I think Middletons return will make us even better.
Its all because they finally listened to us and knocked Goldy and Gorman off their perches. That snapped them out of it. Take a bow everyone.
Now we need to get to work on Donovan.
Hitting a baseball is the toughest skill in sport. (For some of us, it’s a golf ball, but I digress) The pressure when your team is losing games has to be massive.
I only got to see highlights of the game but I was pleased to see a lot of emotion from the team after the Nootbaar RBI hit and Goldschmidt home run. I think it spilled over from Lynn gutting through 5 innings with a lot of emotion. I was not a fan of the Lynn signing at the time but I really don’t think we win this game without his theatrics firing up the squad. I feel like if he can keep his ERA 4.5 or less, he can really help this crew grow up into a winning club
I’m thinking this is a pivotal series that may very well define our season. We’re at that imaginary fork in the road. If we lose these next two games to Arizona, then we’re looking at 2023 all over again. Sweep this series and it’ll be a fun competitive campaign. Split the next two then you can flip a coin or consult your neighborhood fortune teller as to what is to come regarding our 2024 Birds.
Great win! Comeback victory and big hits from the two guys the team needed to get going! Let’s get the offense rolling boys and build a winning streak!
Finally some clutch hitting with Noot getting a big hit, and the G-Men doing something big.
Great to see the emotion on this club. It seems they were going through the motions a lot, but last night they were all fired up. Whether this is merely a highlight in a sad season or one of the fun moments of a competitive campaign remains to be seen.
Our bullpen has been solid when Kitty, JoJo and the Flame Thrower are used. As long as we keep Gallegos and Pallante out of there, and Pallante is down on the farm for now, we have some good late inning pitching. Just gotta get those bats rolling.
I am glad that Goldy and Gorman finally did something positive. We needed it. Now let’s see if they can string some hits together.
Anyone know if Kitty could be stretched out? He might be the starter we so desperately covet. He reminds me of that big horse that the cubbies acquired from Cleveland mid-season back in around ’84, who was lights out……can’t think of his name, but he was a dandy.
Pugs, you are referring to Rick Sutcliffe. He came over to the Cubs in 1984 and proceeded to go 16-1, similar to a run that John Tudor did with the Cards the following year. I believe Sutcliffe finished his career with a few appearances with the Cards.
Sutcliffe went on to do some color commentary for a national network I believe, and was pretty good.
He came up with the Dodgers, but I think he had some sort of rift with Tommy LaSorda and the Bums dealt him to Cleveland. He was lights out with the Cubs in ‘84, kind of like Jake Arrieta was for them a generation later.
Sutcliffe……thanks Scotty! What a depressing summer that was watching cubbie games on channel 9 (WGN) when Sutcliffe was dealing. That is exactly the kind of windfall trade that we need. The NL is littered with above average teams…….but no exceptional ones. Especially so now that Strider is out for the year. The NL flag is obtainable for many. It kind of seems that our team is light years away from contending with the likes of the Dodgers, Phillies and Braves. But if we can get lucky with that one pre-deadline trade and one or two farmhands come up and dazzle, you never know. After a minor meltdown after the Brewers sweepage, I’m ready to forget what has largely happened thus far in the early going of 2024 and totally let bygones be bygones.
That 1994 season was exciting, but not for the Cardinals. They were sub .500 when the plug was pulled on the season. Tony Gwynn missed his chance at .400, Matt Williams his chance at home run record. But to me the biggest casualty from that strike year were the Expos. They were dominating the NL with a great young team. They never got the revenue and fan interest from the playoffs and then the lower attendance after the strike was the nail in the coffin. They were always my favorite team growing up besides the Cardinals.
So back to 1994 Cardinals. Their rotation was an ineffective +5 ERA Tewksbury, Vicente Palacios for some reason, Rene Arocha, Omar Oliveres and then the revolving door of young lefties that didn’t pan out—Tom Urbani, Rheal Cormier (who ended up pretty decent in bullpen), and Allen Watson. I think he won his first 5 decisions before losing the rest. Well Sutcliffe made a few starts over the summer but was clearly done by that point. Still there is always an excitement when you get a pitcher that was great. I remember fantasizing about a 2nd Fernandomania when the Cards traded Danny Jackson for Valenzuela. And I was excited about Phil Plantier since I had a bunch of his stadium club rookie cards
