LHP Steven Matz vs. RHP Gavin Stone
ESPN onlyMarch 30, 2024 at 3:50 pm #245597Well at least this game will be easy to find on the tv.

jj-cf-stlParticipantI’ve said I’m bullish on Matz this season, so how about you don’t make us look like idiots Steven? We need a split series, and we have the vet SP Matz vs Gavin Stones career 4 GS.
Pallante could cover long relief if needed. The hold/ save relievers are good to go again.
March 31, 2024 at 8:23 am #245768Would be really nice to leave SmellA with a split. Keeping this thing around 500 thru this brutal schedule to start the season would be huge. Need to get Matz thru the first couple innings without any damage. Lynn’s 4 clean innings yesterday was the difference. Happy Easter to all!
March 31, 2024 at 10:00 am #245778Matz goes 6 2/3 shut out innings.
Then I woke up.
March 31, 2024 at 10:01 am #245779I hate Sunday night games. Not only do I not get to see them, there is just something wrong about playing under the lights on a Sunday. It is for day games, and preferably double-headers although that is a product of a bygone era.
Although on the viewing part, we are often in our yard and garden Sunday’s anyway so I have the radio broadcast going. It is tough sitting in front of the television on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon.

jj-cf-stlParticipantAmen to that Mike, we spent yesterday outside too. These late west coast starts are convenient for us.
March 31, 2024 at 11:46 am #245785Checked the final along with the box this morning and I can’t recall the last time I saw a box score belie the outcome of a baseball game to the degree of last night’s. How many times can you scratch out 6 hits while surrendering 14 hits and 4 BB’s to the opposition and still come away with a win? I’ll take it.
March 31, 2024 at 11:56 am #245787I told everybody we would NOT start the season out 0-7. Some posters were talking gloom and doom. Shows what they know!
I watched the whole contest last night. And I even watched an episode of Mannix after the game!
Din-din today is another ribeye steak in the air fryer along with some french fries, an ice cold slushy Mt. Dew, and a big bowl of Turkey Hill Vanilla Bean ice cream. Me and Whitey Herdog will be on the couch for the Reds game with Washington from Crosley Field. After din-din we will have a cigar or two.
However, unfortunately, we will be forced into listening to the absolute worst announcing duo in the game today – Sadak and Larkin. Bring back Brennaman and Welsh!

March 31, 2024 at 12:01 pm #245789I watched all 4 innings of precarious work turned in by LL and it was entertaining to see Lance battle. He was out there on the mound fighting tooth and nail to survive and was obviously amped up. I don’t think there’s any question as to whether the rest of this team should try to adopt the type of attitude of fierce determination that Lynn displayed last night. Sometimes you gotta get mad at them eggs…
March 31, 2024 at 12:05 pm #245791Helsley sure did get slapped around. Sheesh…
March 31, 2024 at 12:32 pm #245801I stayed up for the duration last night. It wasn’t for the faint of heart but all ended well. Man if we somehow got out of LA with a split it would feel like winning a playoff series , which we haven’t done since 2019 by the way.
March 31, 2024 at 12:38 pm #245806I was surprised to see that even with the delay, the 10 inning game only took about 4 hrs. to complete.
March 31, 2024 at 12:40 pm #245807Was Helsley that bad, or did he just get beat by possibly the best player in the league in the form of Betts?
March 31, 2024 at 12:44 pm #245808He got knocked around by more than Betts. Was rather fortunate to only give up the two runs.
March 31, 2024 at 12:46 pm #245810Oh, I made a mistake. I thought the tater by Betts tied the game. Looks like the 3 consecutive singles did him in.

jj-cf-stlParticipantDodgers were down to their last pitch a handful of times, but kept getting the next man up.
March 31, 2024 at 1:06 pm #245814Those 4 innings of work from LL are probably the most entertaining 4 innings of Cardinal baseball that I’ve seen in quite some time. I was not only laughing at his theatrics, but was almost as amped up as he was after the 3 consecutive K’s with the bases jammed up in the 1st. He looked like a portly 300 lb. Sasquatch with a temperamental mindset…Haha!
March 31, 2024 at 1:48 pm #245820Indeed it was 1TD. Lynn may be on the Bartolo Colon diet plan but he is a fighter. That was a tough four innings and he made it unscathed.
March 31, 2024 at 1:59 pm #245823Matz was able to put together what could be described as his only stretch of respectable work as a Cardinal at the end of July and into early August of last season before being shut down after August 12th of ’23. The problem is that none of those turns in which he pitched well mattered. The Redbirds were already long since buried. He’ll get his first turn tonight in an early season game that counts. If he ever wants to project the image of a reasonably effective SP’er, he’ll get his chance to begin to do so against an opponent that will provide a genuine challenge. Some players thrive when faced with a challenge. We’ll see whether or not Matz is one of them in this evening’s game at Dodger Stadium.
March 31, 2024 at 2:02 pm #245824Yeah, gcottar, it was a performance that could be termed both inspirational and highly humorous. Let’s face it, we watch to be entertained and LL was genuine baseball entertainment last night…Haha!

SS Masyn Winn RMarch 31, 2024 at 2:47 pm #245828I would rather see Scott bat 9th but Oli is obsessed with the RH/LH stagger.
March 31, 2024 at 2:58 pm #245837it should be noted that the Cardinals are not in last place or a tie for last place. We are a half game ahead of the Cubs. I think the last time we were not in last place was in April 2023.
March 31, 2024 at 3:31 pm #245839
jj-cf-stlParticipantLance channeled his inner Chris Carpenter. They were teammates Lances first two seasons.
