Was the DeWitt (Matt) sent to Toronto in the Hentgen deal a relative of the boss? I didn’t mind a season of unspectacular but dependable of Pat for the nothing we gave up (also lance painter and alberto castillo. Didn’t castillo like to throw from his knees unstead of crouch?)
So can they add someone else to the 60 man since season hasn’t started? Was this what your article on the Wake Forest product portending?
Did we ever get a full story on the 4 mill we owed on Leake’s contract? Last I heard is Leake doesn’t get paid because he opted out but Cards sent the money for this year included at time of trade to Seattle so they might be out of luck. Is this right?

Lost some respect for DeWitt hearing him downplay mlb owner profitability yesterday in an interview. I wish he’d have just said “No Comment”. Article I read was on mlbtraderumors.com.

I think people forget how good his year with us was. 33 starts, over 200 innings of 2.77 era. He may have been a bit of a jerk but you could count on him for 6-7 innings every time out.
Kelly was a decently regarded guy in the absolute steal that got us Lackey for a season at 500k and dumped Craigs salary. Everytime I see an idiot on mlbtraderumors diss Mozeliak I still am in wonder he pulled off that coup, not to mention the comp pick after Lackey left.
Looking at that draft, the only really notable players selected between Cards 4th rd pick and end of 6th were Arrieta, Cishek, and scrabble. Unless we really got lucky nabbing Jake we sure did’t miss out on that pick being lost.
I enjoyed it. Boy, there was a lot of hand wringing when Kyle Russell didn’t sign. 4th rd, 2007. Looks like he had 1 good year at high A but couldn’t back it up at the next level up. I know a lot of people were upset because since he was 4th rd, not 3rd, we didn’t get a replacement pick for taking the risk
Niedenfuer pitched his last mlb season for the Cardinals in 1990 and had a decent year( 3.5ish era in about 60 games) before hanging them up at the ripe age of 30. Wonder if he got hit by an arm injury they couldn’t do anything about.

That was Ozuna’s quote in the Bowman article above when asked about his arm. I think if his arm really was better he would have been a lot more expressive than that. His response sounds like what I would expect if it isn’t feeling better at all.I am satisfied with the way things turned out. However, one thing I will miss about Ozuna is I felt like he was the one guy in the lineup that could take an ace pitcher throwing a shutout deep at any time. But that throwing arm is too big of a liability for me.

Clearly keeping him down early in the year last year was Mo’s idea so we can get the extra year of control when he is a superstar. Ok, maybe not. But we may be thanking Robinson yet in a few years when we have the best utility guy in baseball an extra year.
Jager, as I posted in the castellanes thread a week ago, I see a ton of upside in a one year Pence deal. Last year hit .297 18hr, 5 steals, and supposedly a fantastic clubhouse guy. Between ozuna and martinez gone, and the possibility of no bats stepping up in our outfield, and the new extra roster position, I’d love Pence as the new Martinez. He is not the outfielder he used to be but that bat works for me. I’d gladly support offering 4 mil. Supposedly he is getting a look from the Astros and Texas is his home so it may be too late.
I’m glad the cardinals aren’t in the habit of giving opt outs to guys who aren’t even superstars. I hate this trend even more than the no trade clauses and they only work to saddle teams with bad contracts.
If we are going to sign a defensively challenged outfielder for pop and also try to give playing time to the young guys, I say look no further than Hunter Pence. He hit .297 with 18HR in just under 300 at bats last year, just came out saying he wants to continue playing, and has long been considered a great clubhouse guy. How low does his salary have to go before we would bite? I’d love him for 5-7mil. 1 year commitment, we have the extra roster spot, he even stole 6 bases against 1 CS. Thoughts?
I did mean Ryan Ludwick rather than his brother Eric, who was also a Cardinal. Eric did play a beneficial role for the Cardinals after his call up. After getting the 2nd rounder Ludwick for Bernard Gilkey, he was the centerpiece in the package to acquire McGwire.
Eric Ludwick was the exact best case scenario I was thinking of. This guy seems to have a great attitude. Maybe they found out the prospect was older than he let on or something. I do love those AAA numbers the last 2 years. I wish we had some info on line drive and hard hit rates to view. I’d be more excited knowing he is driving the ball and not getting by on dunkers.
