Brian, it evidently is more complicated than that. Bader has had 1,000+ MLB PAs already. He showed us a .234 BA. We know what he has.
Was Yadi the same hitter for his career he was his first 1,000 PAs? Was Wong?
There is a reason Tyler hasn’t obtained the PA’s to boost his WAR. Injuries, strike out rates, and a roster logjam among them.
Yeah – he had Ozuna blocking him in 2018 & 2019.

2020: 0.8 (157 PA)In 2018, given the same amount of AB’s, O’Neill would have outperformed Benitendi. He did outperform Benitendi last year. And while Benitendi outperformed O’Neill in 2019, a 1.8 WAR over 615 PAs is not anything to get excited about.
On the other hand. Bader tasted the major leagues first in 2017. This will be his 5th year with at least some time in the majors. This will O’Neill’s 4th year with some time in the majors.
Seems like they should have kicked it into high gear by now. JMHO.
Bader was kicking it into gear last year. He had something like 4 HR’s and 5 doubles (one of which he turned into a triple) in 10 games. The Cardinals inexplicably benched him for two weeks.
Bader has had 1050 plate appearances over 4 seasons, and has produced 6.6 bWAR. So, he’s roughly a 3.75 WAR/600 player.
Tyler O’Neil has had 450 plate appearances over three years. He has produced 2.3 bWAR. That extrapolates to 3 WAR/600 over a full season.
If they are allowed to play full time, and Bader produces 3.75 WAR and O’Neill produces 3 WAR, we’ll be in great shape.
Yes, we’re scoffing at the idea of trading Flaherty for Benitendi because Flaherty is worth more than Benitendi.
Flaherty will make either $3 million or $3.9 million this year. You don’t trade him because you think he will be making $35 million in three years. If he commands $35 million in three years, you’ve more than gotten your value out of him.
And that is Flaherty’s point of contention. It is not with the Cardinals, it is with how young players are underpaid relative to their value.
Let the kids play. There are five of them. The Cardinals need to do this year what they were supposed to do last year – see what they have in the outfield.
When Freidman took over, his mandate was to get the player payroll down.
He took the job in 2015. In 2016, MLB TOLD the Dodgers to reduce payroll. More recently, it was to dip below the luxury tax.
So, I don’t necessarily think this is a “break” from his past. His first few years he had constraints. Now, he doesn’t.
It’s one thing to send cash to get rid of a player, it’s another thing to send cash + prospects.
And while you may be fine with Gallo’s K’s, the front office of the Cardinals has not shown that they are.
He is going to be strictly a bench bat. Pinch hitter, spell Arenado and Goldy on occasion.
Who knows, they might try to pull off a deal like they did with Fowler, though I sense a bit more loyalty to having Carpenter be a part of a final run for the previous core.
I agree. Sounds like they are going to get a starting pitcher.
I don’t see them getting anyone else position-wise unless the DH comes into play. Then, there is really only one choice (Ozuna).
For utility players, they have Sosa and Kramer Robertson.
I can see the PTBNL being contingent on how well Fowler plays for the Angels.
Unranked flier if he performs poorly, somebody ranked outside of Top 10 in their farm if he performs well (personally, I would grab one of their shortstops)
The Angels fans were NOT happy they got Fowler last night. Even after they found out they are only paying $1.75 million.

No, the Cardinals aren’t trading Flaherty. And Bader’s floor is 3 WAR due to his defense.
I could live with the outfield and give them all playing time.
But I would like to see them bring back Ozuna as a third big bat. Of course, then I would be hoping we get the DH this year.
