Interstate 74 seems to be a dividing line although I don’t know how it is East of Bloomington, IL.
Yes, Bloomington is the halfway point between Chicago & STL, so it makes sense I-74 (which goes to Peoria) is considered the area where the two fan bases converge.
The Cardinals true market size has always been debatable. While the St. Louis metro area might be relatively small we all know that the actual Cardinal market is vastly larger than that, encompassing many states.
Market sizes are always based on Metro areas. While the Cardinals may draw from multiple states, what is the population in those areas from which they draw? I’ve lived in neighborhoods of cities with 100,000-300,000 people, and grew up in a town of 20,000 just outside of St. Louis.
Once can also argue Milwaukee, Cincinnati and Cleveland are actually much bigger markets, because Milwaukee draws from the entire state, and Cincinnati & Clevelenad have many metros within a few hours drive.

Depreciation and ammortization are not “expenses.” They are ways of reducing taxable income to allow for future replenishment/replacement.
Bader hit .205 in 2019 which I do not consider MLB starter level talent.
In 2019, Bader would have been a 3 WAR player if you extrapolate to a full season of at-bats.
In 2018 & 2020, he would have been a 4 WAR player.
An “average” player is 2 WAR.
People around here say he’s not going to improve after 1050 AB’s? That’s two full seasons. And Wong was much worse than Bader at this point in his career.

Does anybody know how much of the international bonus pool the Cardinals have spent? I see roughly $2.2 million, but that is for 5 of the 15 players they have apparently signed, and they have a pool of $5.8 million available…
This is a great article. We all knew Yadi was great at cutting down runners, but this really puts it in perspective.
The last few years we have seen the small market Rays and A’s win and go to the playoffs while the large market Angels, Phillies, Mets, and Giants haven’t done jack.
Neither the Rays nor the A’s are in “small” markets. The A’s are in the 5th largest metro area (6th in TV), the Rays are in the 18th (12th in TV). For reference, St. Louis is 20th (23rd).
These are teams that claim to be small market so they can receive competitive balance funds and their owners don’t have to invest in their teams.
People need to stop supporting corporate welfare for billionaires.
If Jack declines a Q-ffer as a FA-to-be, STL receives compensation. While it’s easy to poo-poo compensation picks, lets not forget Flaherty was draft pick compensation himself (#34), for the Beltran Q-offer.
Hudson was comp pick #34 for Heyward. Carlson was comp pick #33 for Lackey. Bauer will net Cincy pick #30…
Under the current competitive balance pick rules, the highest a compensation pick can be for the Cardinals is after round 2.
Seriously, the MLBPA should push hard for a payroll floor in the next CBA.
Totally agree. The floor should be whatever MLB teams receive from MLB and the pooling of local TV contracts, which would be at least $100 million.
Taking away the incentive to tank will boost the value of all clubs, so the owners should get behind it (except the ones perpetually claiming to be poor).

Brian, it evidently is more complicated than that. Bader has had 1,000+ MLB PAs already. He showed us a .234 BA. We know what he has.
Was Yadi the same hitter for his career he was his first 1,000 PAs? Was Wong?
There is a reason Tyler hasn’t obtained the PA’s to boost his WAR. Injuries, strike out rates, and a roster logjam among them.

2020: 0.8 (157 PA)In 2018, given the same amount of AB’s, O’Neill would have outperformed Benitendi. He did outperform Benitendi last year. And while Benitendi outperformed O’Neill in 2019, a 1.8 WAR over 615 PAs is not anything to get excited about.
On the other hand. Bader tasted the major leagues first in 2017. This will be his 5th year with at least some time in the majors. This will O’Neill’s 4th year with some time in the majors.
Seems like they should have kicked it into high gear by now. JMHO.
Bader was kicking it into gear last year. He had something like 4 HR’s and 5 doubles (one of which he turned into a triple) in 10 games. The Cardinals inexplicably benched him for two weeks.
Bader has had 1050 plate appearances over 4 seasons, and has produced 6.6 bWAR. So, he’s roughly a 3.75 WAR/600 player.
Tyler O’Neil has had 450 plate appearances over three years. He has produced 2.3 bWAR. That extrapolates to 3 WAR/600 over a full season.
If they are allowed to play full time, and Bader produces 3.75 WAR and O’Neill produces 3 WAR, we’ll be in great shape.
Yes, we’re scoffing at the idea of trading Flaherty for Benitendi because Flaherty is worth more than Benitendi.
Flaherty will make either $3 million or $3.9 million this year. You don’t trade him because you think he will be making $35 million in three years. If he commands $35 million in three years, you’ve more than gotten your value out of him.
And that is Flaherty’s point of contention. It is not with the Cardinals, it is with how young players are underpaid relative to their value.
Let the kids play. There are five of them. The Cardinals need to do this year what they were supposed to do last year – see what they have in the outfield.
When Freidman took over, his mandate was to get the player payroll down.
He took the job in 2015. In 2016, MLB TOLD the Dodgers to reduce payroll. More recently, it was to dip below the luxury tax.
So, I don’t necessarily think this is a “break” from his past. His first few years he had constraints. Now, he doesn’t.
It’s one thing to send cash to get rid of a player, it’s another thing to send cash + prospects.
And while you may be fine with Gallo’s K’s, the front office of the Cardinals has not shown that they are.
