seeing how Yepez is doing has to have him considering Gorman
2 totally different players and situations. Also Gorman in May did hit a HR tonight but is under .200 and his K% is closer to about 50%. I don’t think they can legitimately say he’s ready to be called up any time soon.
Yepez is much more of a well rounded hitter, even if the ceiling is way lower.May 7, 2022 at 2:54 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 27 thread – Sat., May 7 at SF Giants #184627Rats I’ve never been to either and I’m not far from you in the Evansville area. Went to Ball State and only made me hate the Indy area more and anything north of Bloomington, and I only stretch it to Bloomington because Assembly Hall cannot be hated.
I stayed up got to watch last night, but unfortunately will be driving to Indy soon and won’t be watching tonight. Hope they can continue the winning ways!Covid. Hopefully that means only 1 missed start.
May 3, 2022 at 2:55 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 23 thread – Tuesday, May 3 at Royals #184241He’ll be a Tyler O’Neill type at the MLB level, which is fine. 30% Ks and 7-8% walks sounds about right. But you can live with that if he’s hitting 30 HRs.
So he’s nothing more than my original assessment of Russell Branyan? Over the last couple years of his swing and leg kick being shortened I thought he would be more productive than that. 35+% K rate in AAA scares me at what kind of production he can have at the big league level.

May 2, 2022 at 10:28 am in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 22 thread – Monday, May 2 vs. Royals #184135Radar looks like rain in the area around 3:30. Hopefully Matz throws strikes and they can gave a quick game.
I think at this point I’d try
1. Edman – SS (S)
2. Bader – CF (R)
3. Goldschmidt – 1B (R)
4. Arenado – 3B (R)
5. Dickerson/Pujols – DH (L/R)
6. O’Neill – LF (R)
7. Carlson – RF (S)
8. Knizner – C (R)
9. Donovan/Sosa – 2B (L/R)Sosa, DeJong, Pujols, Molina
And be searching for something to do with DeJong and making some serious evaluation on how soon is a reasonable time for Gorman.
It might be too early to say I saw it coming with O’Neill, but I saw it coming. I thought Carlson was ready for a step forward, but he’s not appearing so right now.I don’t know who would trade for DeJong right now either. I think there’s at least a possibility Cleveland, Detroit, Washington, and maybe San Francisco would have some interest. I know they’ve got to do something though.
Gorman has another bomb tonight…and another K. Yepez has a bomb and after a slow start has picked it up.April 30, 2022 at 11:33 am in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 20 thread – Saturday, April 30 vs. D’backs #183948Arenado serving his suspension this weekend?
And that’s an ugly lineup with Molina that high, Carlson struggling, O’Niell proving the regression is realMaybe DeJong fits in Cleveland or moves to 3B in Detroit, because they signed Baez to be the SS, but Baez could move too.
Gorman is hitting bombs and his slash line looks good, but his 35% K rate is scary.
I don’t know what to do with DeJong at this point, I’ve tried to be a believer in him but it’s at the point the best option appears to be Edman at SS and Sosa and Donovan splitting 2B until Gorman is ready and gets the call.
I don’t see DeJong fitting in KC that easily even with the Mondesi injury. They already had 3 SS in the IF with Witt at 3B and Lopez at 2B. Not saying he couldn’t fit, but some shuffling could be done on their part too.
Edit: looking I see KC has put Lopez at SS and Merrifield (who’s struggling badly) back at 2B the last few games. Which if I was KC makes way more sense than adding DeJong. Why is everyone ready to run Gio out? The guy has been one of the best relievers in baseball the last 3 years and had 1 “bad” outing enhanced by a fielding error and his own mental lapse and people want to replace him? 2003 Gagne on May 12 went 1/3ip, 3 H, 1 BB, 4 runs. In 2007 Mariano Rivera had back to back outing on April 15 with 2/3 ip, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 R then April 12 with 2/3 ip, 3 H, 2 R. And then April 27 with 1/3 ip, 3 H, BB, 4 runs. And a 2.23 ERA after April 27.
I really like Helsley and have believed in him. But they have to have set up and versatility that Helsley can bring. I think Gio will be just fine and Helsley has a chance to be a really good setup with Whitley. I’m way more worried why Brooks is there and if Wittgren and Cabrera will have enough command to be as effective as they can be.April 27, 2022 at 7:03 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 17 thread – Wednesday, April 27 vs. Mets #183660Why is everyone ready to run Gio out? Doesn’t sound racist to me in the slightest, but what do I know about this world we live in in 2022
They have Dickerson who’s going to get the bulk of DH starts vs. RHP. They are giving Pujols the opening say start because it’s Pujols. I really hope this Pujols signing doesn’t turn into a disaster and him playing way more than he deserves at this point.
I don’t mind Carlson leading off and even said it’s what I’d start off the season with. With the spring Edman had hitting him 9 and take the pressure off and let him be him. I don’t like Pujols 5 and Molina 7. Pujols has no business hitting 5, especially vs RHP, and I was being generous saying I’d hit them 6th and 8th.And I’d love to be watching today but I’m on vacation in Florida and my Bally Sports and DirecTV Stream apps both know I’m in Florida and won’t let me watch.
Edman’s base stealing ability behind Molina is my concern.
Maybe I’d go
7. Bader
8. Edman
9. Molina
But I’m not sure how much it would actually be a factor.Let those 2 use their speed to steal some bases and hit and run with Molina. But I’m sure Molina will be hitting 6th and right there in the middle of the line up like they’ve been doing with him for a few years.
O’Neill repeating last season is still a HUGE concern of mine. But I hit him 3rd and give him a chance obviously. Move him down and make the necessary adjustments when needed. With what I saw this spring and the addition of Pujols, I’d now start out with
1. Carlson – RF (S)
2. Goldschmidt – 1B (R)
3. O’Neill- LF (R)
4. Arenado – 3B (R)
5. DeJong – SS (R)
6. Dickerson/Pujols – DH (L/R)
7. Bader – CF (R)
8. Molina – C (R)
9. Edman – 2B (S)Sosa – IF (R), Dickerson – OF (L)/Pujols (R), Nootbarr – OF (L), Knizner – C (R)
I’m still a believer in Edman and huge fan. I like him hitting leadoff, bit understand the concern, and with the spring he had I’d take the pressure off and hit him 9 where he’s still a “leadoff” for the 2nd time around.
March 24, 2022 at 9:09 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #181220I’m not real keen on letting Yepez go. I like him and with the DH around now I think he’s going to see quite a few AB’s and get a chance.
As for my proposal, this trade simulator says I’m not close. But I don’t know. I’m not sold on Oviedo, but there is definitely potential, along with Fernandez, if the control can get under control. I think they need a SP and have Woodford available in AAA for more depth. And I like Trivino and think another late inning arm could be really nice as Hicks health seems to constantly be an issue. The Dodgers pen last year with Jensen, Trienen, Kelly, Knebel really shortened games and I’d love to add another dependable arm to the back end and have some lats inning depth.
March 23, 2022 at 9:58 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #181198How about Rondon, Oviedo, Fernandez, Nunez for Manaea and Trivino
I also have said I wasn’t as high on Gorman as a lot of people, and even said I thought he was more of Russell Braynan. But the little I’ve seen this spring his leg kick is lower, swing is shorter and more compact than it was in the low level minors. And he looks way more like someone who can be a consistent major league hitter. So I think he could be in the lineup at some point, especially if there is a injury that needs him to fill in.
I’d start with
1. Edman – 2B (S)
2. Goldschmidt – 1B (R)
3. O’Neill – LF (R)
4. Arenado – 3B (R)
5. Carlson – RF (S)
6. DeJong – SS (R)
7. Dickerson/Yepez – DH (L/R)
8. Molina – C (R)
9. Bader – CFThen make adjustments as needed. Could be Carlson leading off, Bader 5th or 6th, Sosa at SS, I still say O’Neill is the most likely for regression and him hitting 3rd may not be where he sticks. But Is start off with that and adjust off of it.
Knebel signed with the Phillies today.
Well darn. Oh, well.
And Luis Garcia to the Padres for 2/$7 millionIt was 4.5 per 9, according to Baseball Reference.
This season was 4.5. In 72 AAA innings its 5.8 bb/9. Not saying he’s not worth a look, especially on a minor league deal, but they have gone away from control issue players recently.
McHugh and/or Knebel are the 2 I’ve wanted from the start. Knebel would be a more “traditional” reliever and work set up for Gallegos, or vice-versa. McHugh is much less traditional, but been highly effective as a reliever. He’s worked as an opener, set up, and worked many 2 inning appearances. For his career as a reliever, mostly since 2018, he has a 2.45 ERA, 10.9 K/9, 4.02 K/BB. I like the idea of having a versatile weapon like McHugh. As for Knebel he’s been fighting injury since 2018 and missed all of 2019, limited in 2020, and didn’t come back until later in 2021. But looked stronger as the season went and still has that nasty breaking ball and velocity was back up to 96 this year where it was when we saw him in Milwaukee. He’s definitely intriguing enough to me that I’d take the chance on his health at the right cost of course.
