But Flaherty and Edman together could very likely get you Pepiot, Ryan, Bruns, and Mann. Which is a MLB ready SP coming back from injury, a AAA SP, a A+ SP that has excellent stuff and struggled with command, and a 26 year old AAA utility guy that could replace Edman or Motter on the roster.
Maybe that’s too much, but I think it’d be close.
Would love to see O’Neill and Contreras scratched. But I don’t know who’s taking Contreras at this point, Houston maybe.
Edman activated and Thompson recalled. I don’t know if that’s a full 26 man or not
And it’s why they are in last place.
I’d rather send O’Neill and Baker to KC for Barlow and A+ SP Barnett. Barlow goes into Hicks spot, and is controllable for next season when hopefully they are competing, Barnett just another pitching prospect to keep hoarding right now. O’Neill and Baker give KC some offense. Finish out with Mikolas, Matz, Wainwright, Hudson, Liberatore as SP and then retool it in the off-season.
I say go with the OF of Nootbaar, Carlson, Walker and Burleson on the bench. Hopefully Yepez can find it again. No way I trade him at this point, his value is super low. If they aren’t competitive again next year then Goldschmidt will be traded and 1B could open up for Walker, Burleson, or Yepez if one wants to step up and claim it. If they are competitive then hopefully Yepez has regained some traction and he or Burleson could be moved for other needs then.
We have never needed O’Neill. I’ve been begging for him to be traded for 3 years. They need to just do it already.
IMO, I’d trade Edman for controllable pitching. I like Edman, but they need pitching.
Yeah, I have no interest in keeping Flaherty. Ship him and Edman to LAD for some prospects. That should net a pretty good haul. I like Edman, but they need controllable pitching and have to trade something.
Probably will go to AA with the Cardinals. Can’t expect much with the money DeJong is making and the buyout of his option years. He’s a good filler for TOR while Bo is out though and then may see some time at 2B when Bo is back.
I hope not Carlson. I still say he’s much more JD Drew than Colby Rasmus and it took Drew time. I say Flaherty and DeJong are gone. Hopefully O’Neill. I think there’s a good chance of Baker and a catcher being moved, and I’m 50/50 on if Edman could be.
Saggese has an “odd” load in his swing and his bat tends go load towards the pitcher, things that can be worked out. His bat is REALLY quick though and lead to success to this point and ability to generate power from a smaller stature and get the bat to the ball. Getting a few kinks worked out against quality pitching and strike zone discipline will probably be necessary and determine if hes a utility player or everyday player. I like his versatility and “grit”, if he’s able to be a SS substitute though would really add to his value to the team.
Roby’s health and development are going go be key to the trade being successful though.I think Kloffenstein will be a reliever. It’s understandable they want to keep him as a starter in AAA to see what they’ve got. But his sinker and slider are both out pitches and he could be another Gallegos like find.
He’s smaller than Donovan, more Edman size it looks like. Has good hitting numbers in AA
More Donovan game. Speed isn’t really part of his game, but not slow, more pop than Edman. Which is why I compared him to Donovan.
Roby was 11 and Saggese was 15 in their system
was just coming here to post this. Interesting to see Robberse at 6 or 7 based on what you look at. Also lists Robberse and Kloffenstein at AAA.
Roby was placed at #4 and Saggese at #8 on the Cardinals prospects on MLB.com
Dodgers and Diamondbacks make the most sense to me for Flaherty. We’ll see what they do. I’m not big on trading for injured players, which they did getting Roby from Texas, but Ryan Pepiot would be interesting pickup from the Dodgers, and its been an oblique injury, not arm, thats kept him out. Devin Mann is another Utility type player I like in their system. Hes 26, so they’d have to be more with him, but intriguing especially if they do decide to trade Edman to get more pitching.
Flaherty and DeJong are almost all but gone you’d think. VerHagen, Edman, Carlson or O’Neill, Herrera, Baker all more names that could be gone for sure.
He got 3 plate appearances. They did the same thing with O’Neill in his rehab. He’d get 3 at bats and then they would pull him.
I really like Saggese too. I think he’s got “Donovan” potential. He’s right handed hitter, but has the ability to play anywhere in the IF. Anything I read about him talks about his “baseball IQ” and being a great teammate. I think hes at least a reserve IF and has the potential to be a more regular. The “key” to the trade to me though is Roby. He’s a former 3rd round pick that ranked #11 in Texas system. He has solid 4 pitches and brings a live 96 and “high spin” curveball. Hes been on the IL since early June with a shoulder injury. His development will be key to this trade being successful. If he develops into a quality SP then I think its a win for the situation, if hes a late inning RP then it can still be a win, if hes not able to get past shoulder problems then it really makes it questionable.
Hicks to Toronto for AA SP Sem Robberse and AA SP Adam Kloffenstein. Robberse was ranked #7 in Toronto’s system. Quick read was that hes from the Netherlands and “self taught”, doesn’t throw real hard and his stats aren’t overly impressive. Kloffenstein has better AA stats this season, but struggled the last 2 after missing the 2020 no minor league season. I believe he’ll need added to the 40 man this off season. From the quick “scouting” I just did on them Kloffenstein has questionable SP, but late inning reliever written all over him.
Montgomery and Stratton to Texas for LHP John King, AA IF Thomas Saggese and AA SP Tekoah Roby. King is on the 40 man and been in AAA this season, parts on 2020-2023 in the big leagues with very unimpressive stats since 2021. Saggese (So-Jay-see) was ranked #14 in Texas system and had good numbers in AA and can play anywhere in the IF. Has spent most of this season at 3B and 2B with the little Acuna, who they also just traded playing SS. He’s a guy I mentioned a few months ago that I liked if they were to make a trade with Texas. Roby ranked #11 in Texas system and is a former 3rd round pick who throws pretty hard.
3) Montgomery and Stratton for prospects. Together they should be able to land 2-3 quality prospects. Baltimore and Atlanta are both teams I could see an easy fit for them.
4) Hicks and VerHagen to Texas for a couple minor leaguers.
-Texas needs RP help. I don’t know the extent of VerHagen’s hip impingement and if he’s tradable, but his contract is expiring and throw him in for depth. AA IF Thomas Saggese is a guy I like, right handed Donovan like player. Scrappy, can play all over.Mo, doing something I approve of kinda scares me. As I said I’d put Montgomery and Stratton together and while they went to Texas and not Hicks, Saggese (pronounced So-Jay-see) was one of the prospects they got back. I’ll have to do some more investigating on the other guys they got.
I’m glad they got the game in for 1 reason. I normally couldn’t care less about the “first pitch”, but the guy who threw it out tonight was a coworker of mine and a shift partner for over a year. In September 2021 he was training a new hire and responding to a domestic disturbance and the man had a gun. When they got there the man walked out the front door and fired a shot out towards responding officers, not aiming just in their area, and hit him in the left side of the head. He survived, but lost almost all ability to talk, and movement in his right side. It took almost a year of rehab to be able to walk again, but he is walking. It’s a sad story for a good guy.
July 29, 2023 at 7:00 pm in reply to: what would constitute a successful run to the trade deadline? #229745I could really see them going the route of trying to fix Alex Manoah or trading for a guy like Drew Rasmussen, who is out until about the All-Star break next year with TJ surgery. They want young controllable pitching and could try to buy low on guys like this. Knowing Mo and his history it would be Rasmussen and they will trade Herrera for him and Herrera will be a 10 year All-Star in Tampa.
July 29, 2023 at 1:14 pm in reply to: what would constitute a successful run to the trade deadline? #229708The return they received is minimal for 2024 impact.
STL will not fix the pitching by trading rentals.
That’s fine. Build the prospects up! Assess 2024 in the off season and if they have to trade some of those prospects or their current prospects then so be it. Get talent with control. There’s absolutely ZERO reason to hold on to anyone with expiring contracts or redundancy at positions. If they don’t move Montgomery, Flaherty, Stratton, Hicks, VerHagen, DeJong it’s absolutely unacceptable. And I’d throw O’Neill in there too. I know they don’t want to sell low. But come on with it, enough is enough. Go with Nootbaar, Carlson, Walker the rest of the year and Burlson off the bench. Get something for O’Neill before he hits .220 the rest of the year with 30%+ K rate and it becomes a question of it he’s nontendered or not. I’d consider trading Edman or Arenado too if the return was high enough and more immediate help.
