Sosa hasn’t done anything to deserve to play more, not like he’s hitting. Sosa is no more than Aledmys Diaz to me. Nothing wrong with that, there is a role for that and a chance to make a good living and decent MLB career of it. Sosa isn’t going to be a consistent MLB starter. And Edman doesn’t need to be in the OF. He’s the SS and shouldn’t be moving elsewhere.

June 23, 2022 at 11:55 am in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 72 thread – Thursday, June 23 at Brewers #188968Yepez is playing LF again???
If you can hit they will find a place for you to play. His bat has to be in the lineup. Is he better off at 1B or DH? Clearly. But Oli must want to DH Arenado today, meaning Yepez has to play LF. A lot like Allen Craig was. He wasn’t much of an OF at all, but he wasn’t playing 1B with Pujols and his bat was too good not to have in the lineup. Start him, give him 3 AB’s, defensive sub late.
June 23, 2022 at 11:29 am in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 72 thread – Thursday, June 23 at Brewers #188966I would rather flip flop Gorman and Donovan in the batting order but oh well.
Couldn’t agree more!
As for Nootbaar. He’s definitely got some talent, but struggling this year. He was rushed up last year out of necessity. He was drafted in 2018 made it to AA in 2019, missed 2020, even spending time in AAA this year he only has 52 games and 180 PA in AAA. But I also believe his time with St. Louis could be numbered as the need for pitching is there and Burleson is waiting in AAA. But then again Nootbaar plays much better defense than Burleson and Yepez and they may not move him.
Walker hasn’t seen any time in the OF yet, but I agree they probably need to start exploring the idea sooner rather than later, unless they just don’t think he can do it, then he’s going to be limited to DH for awhile.
June 22, 2022 at 6:22 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #188803KC wouldn’t do that. Staumont’s value is high. That trade simulator often referenced on here has his value at 20. And while I think that’s high it’s going to take quite a bit to get KC to part, with his last 3 seasons and hasn’t reached arbitration yet. But I agree Nootbaar is a fit, but way more than Fernandez, more like Woodford and Oviedo/Rondon….And that simulator still says I’m WAY light. Fernandez probably paired with a low level guy could bring a David Robertson, which I wouldn’t mind if the Cubs want to help us out. I do worry what the BB% could be though with Staumont and Robertson, but at least they miss barrels our current middle relievers can’t do at all.
But I agree, they need to find takers or cut ties with McFarland, Wittgren, VerHagen and have something likeMikolas, Wainwright, Flaherty, Hudson, Pallante
Thompson(L), Hicks, Robertson, Chafin(L), Staumont, Cabrera(L), Gallegos, Helsley? – Matz(L)
June 21, 2022 at 8:31 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #188771Still say DeJong and a prospect to Detroit for Andrew Chafin. Detroit has absolutely no production in their IF and could possibly be willing to take a chance on DeJong. He could move to 2B or 3b for them or play SS and move Baez off SS. Just a matter of what kind of prospect it would take for them to take that chance. Could then cut ties with McFarland or maybe Detroit would take him on too.
June 21, 2022 at 4:54 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 70 thread – Tuesday, June 21 at Brewers #188751Kinda figured something was up when he was moved from 1B to DH shortly before last night’s game started.
Been on the road for work all day and just got home. Going to grab dinner with my dad while he’s in town and should be home just in time to catch the game.June 20, 2022 at 8:28 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 69 thread – Monday, June 20 at Brewers #188632Somebody tell Dan Ashby was put on the IL today and won’t be starting tomorrow night.
Thanks, I think. It might mean I spend too much time watching and reading and looking at stats. In middle school I started playing a game with myself where every morning I’d look at the pitching match up and try to guess LaRussa’s lineup. Every day was worth “18 points”, a point for each correct player in the correct spot on the lineup and 1 point for each correct player in the defensive position. I did this for years, even into adulthood, and was just a fun little game I played. It was harder there for awhile when Tony would randomly hit the pitcher 8th. So maybe it’s just years of repetition.
For the 1000th time – THE MANAGER DOES NOT SET THE ROSTER.
So, is this a criticize the front office thread or a criticize the manager thread?
Hire Joe Maddon! Hire Joe Girardi! Hire anyone fired by another team! Sheesh!
I have no desire for Maddon or Girardi now. Would have been on board with either in 2012 when Tony retired. Which brings me to the roster. You can’t tell me Tony didn’t have serious input on his roster. The new guys? Probably not much at all. Which in my opinion is why there are a lot more younger, “analytical” managers because they are just pawns of the front office playing a video game of names with numbers. I agree stats can tell a whole lot, but there’s something to chemistry, baseball knowledge, leadership that give a team an extra edge that can’t be measured in stats, and Tony always had his boys and his players. And I’ll always be way more critical of the front office, the manager is only playing with the pieces he’s given (see Torre in STL vs Torre in NY), and this team needs pen help the front office didn’t address except with Japanese cast-off and their likes.
I don’t think he gets the call either. Just there seems to be a chance to possibly get a look, especially with the unknown of Dickerson right now. But I’d guess Nootbaar comes back or maybe they just activate Dickerson if he’s healthy. And probably see a combination of Yepez and Donovan in LF. I think Donovan in LF, Gorman at 2B, Yepez at DH is probably what we see most.
Does he get the call now with O’Neill injury?
Dickerson went on rehab assignment Thursday and went 1-3 as the DH, but Deluzio PH for him and Dickerson hasn’t played since. I’m not sure why. Nootbaar has continued to struggle. The thing working against Burleson is the 40 man is full and he’s not on it.Here is what I want to see:
Vs RHP
1. Edman SS (S)
2. Donovan 2B (L)
3. Goldschmidt 1B (R)
4. Arenado 3B (R)
5. Gorman DH (L)
6. O’Neill LF (R)
7. Carlson RF (S)
8. Knizner C (R)
9. Bader CF (R)
Gorman at 2B and Donovan wherever you need him to let someone else DH.Vs LHP
1. Edman SS (S) quit moving him to 2B
2. Bader CF (R)
3. Goldschmidt 1B (R)
4. Arenado 3B (R)
5. Pujols DH (R)
6. O’Neill LF (R)
7. Carlson RF (R)
8. Knizner C (R)
9. Sosa 2B (R)
Yepez in both line ups can spell O’Neill and Carlson when needed, to me he’d be splitting time about 50/50 with O’Neill. He could play LF or RF or he could DH, Gorman to 2B, Donovan to LF/RF.
Nootbaar included in a trade for pitching help. Burleson becomes the immediate depth in AAA. I don’t see them giving Burleson a shot at starting until next year and it’s probably at a platoon with Yepez at DH, maybe LF if Mo gets off his crush for O’Neill and gets rid of him, but a Yepez/Burleson LF could be pretty poor defensively.June 19, 2022 at 7:59 am in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 68 thread – Sunday, June 19 at Red Sox #188476The line up the last 2 games to me is by far the best lineup to win. I’d hit Bader 9 vs RHP because I like the idea of him starting the order over. Bader, Edman, Donovan all with a good chance of someone being on in front of Goldschmidt and Arenado. Vs a LHP I’d just swap Pujols for Gorman and then Sosa 9th in place of Donovan and move Bader up to 2.
Who do you want at the plate right now?
Guess Arenado. Nice attempt at a comeback though.
I really like Burleson’s bat. Question is where does he fit defensively and is the bat at MLB level DH quality. Burleson can play 1B, and probably where he’d fit best defensively, but some guy seems to have that locked down for a few more years.
Personally I’d use Nootbaar in a trade for pitching this year, attempt to move Dickerson (Atlanta is a team that could possible have some interest), Burleson maybe get a chance at MLB if an injury comes about that a bat is needed, but is probably just depth this season if not. What if they were able to find a taker for Dickerson and then KC would want O’Neill (27, 2 more years of team control), Nootbaar, 2 prospects for Benintendi (28, free agent after the year) and Staumont? Burleson would be the deptch OF then if injury, then if Beninteni isn’t kept LF in 2023 could be open for Yepez and Burleson. And if Benintendi was kept Yepez and Burleson could be the bench bats with Sosa. Benintendi, Bader, Carlson, Arenado, Edman, Gorman, Goldschmidt, Knizner/Herrera, Donovan playing all over spelling whoever to be the DH and DH himself when needed.
I don’t know just quick brainstorming while McFarland continues to get hammered.June 17, 2022 at 7:27 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #188323DeJong has negative trade value, Woodford’s is pretty low, Gomez was a minor league free agent and while having a good season the trade value still isn’t going to be high, and Junior has little value.
To trade DeJong they are going to have to attach a decent piece to him and few teams would still take him on. Like I’ve said many times it will have to resemble the Craig and Kelly for Lackey to get anything done. I think Fernandez trade value is probably as a secondary or 3rd piece in a deal for a reliever. Like a lower level prospect and Fernandez for Staumont or something like that. Maybe Fernandez and another lower value minor league reliever for David Robertson, if the Cubs will deal with the Cardinals.June 17, 2022 at 6:30 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 66 thread – Friday, June 17 at Red Sox #188311I think Romine signing is that a claim for Sanchez has been put in and they are losing the depth. Pages is already in AAA and Coulter is the only other depth at catcher at AAA.
June 15, 2022 at 7:57 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 65 thread – Wednesday, June 15 vs. Bucs #188120And I love this line up vs RHP, not the defensive alignment, but batting order. I’d personally prefer Yepez over O’Neill, but love 1-4 in that line up and think Gorman 5 is a good spot with Yepez/O’Neill and Carlson behind him. And Molina finally down 8 where he belongs.
June 15, 2022 at 7:55 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 65 thread – Wednesday, June 15 vs. Bucs #188119Jack didn’t look good. Not only was the velocity down, command very poor, and slider not sharp, but his mechanics look very out of whack. Looks to be short arming and under a lot of pitches. I don’t know if the arm action was something purposely changed, as in going to the pitch lab and trying to remove stress and be more efficient. Up on the mound talking to himself a lot and could see him telling himself at the plate and not spinning off. Hopefully it’s just mechanical adjustments that can be ironed out and not compensation for a aching shoulder, coming from one that compensated myself for an aching shoulder by short arming a lot because big arm motion hurt way more.
June 14, 2022 at 10:17 am in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 63 thread – Tuesday, June 14 vs. Bucs (G1 DH) #187918A few years back I sat in the first row of the upper deck in RF, close to the RF foul pole. It was a July, Sunday afternoon game, and it was by far the most hot I’d ever been in my life. The heat doesn’t bother me and the 110 heat index that day, sitting out there in the sun, was HOT. I’ve sat through some hot games, July 2010 was another scorcher, but that day in the upper deck was like nothing I’d sat through before. I can’t imagine a huge crowd for a Tuesday, noon start time vs Pittsburgh. They should definitely allow whoever is there to move wherever they want today and get out of some of the heat to make their day enjoyable.
June 13, 2022 at 5:37 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 62 thread – Monday, June 13 vs. Bucs #187855Seems to be Knizner’s job now and prove it’s his before a longer look at Herrera. Molina also seems in worse shape this year than the last few.
June 11, 2022 at 2:27 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 60 thread – Saturday, June 11 vs. Reds #187631Work schedule has been crazy the last 2 weeks and haven’t had a lot of time to watch, but I just got in from taking care of the yard and ready to watch some baseball finally. I’m sitting down to a 3-0 deficit I see, and more Gorman and O’Neill K’s, but happy to finally be watching again. And the work schedule is back to normal this week so I should be back to watching regularly.
June 9, 2022 at 7:36 am in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 57 thread – Wednesday, June 8 at Rays #187451Hicks can’t stay healthy and I haven’t heard a thing about how long he’s looking at being out. He had TJ and now this is like the 3rd forearm stain since it.
I’d love to hear how Rosenthal looked and if the Cardinals were in attendance, because they’ve got to go something. And they better find a LH because McFarland has got to go. -
