And I’ll further it with Matz threw a 2 inning rehab on 6/28. One would think that means he’s scheduled to keep stretching out on 7/3, 7/8, 7/13, then would be scheduled for 7/18 which is a Monday meaning Memphis is off and it’s the first day of the major league all-star break. If all goes well in his next 3 rehab starts you’d think he’d be slated to come back probably in the first series at Cincinnati. He could start the 22nd, first game back, and be on 8 days rest since his last rehab start, giving more time off for Mikolas and Wainwright.
July 1, 2022 at 9:56 am in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 80 thread – Saturday, July 2 at Phillies #189734I don’t understand starting Liberatore Saturday, unless they want to give Wainwright, Hudson, Pallante and extra day and Wainwright an extended break over the all-star break.
They have it set up
Mikolas-1@PHIL, 6@ATL, 11 PHIL, 16 CIN
Liberatore-2@PHIL, 7@ATL, 12 LAD, 17 CIN
Wainwright-3@PHIL, 8 PHIL, 13 LAD
Hudson-4@ATL, 9 PHIL, 14 CIN
Pallante-5@ATL, 10 PHIL, 15 CINThey could throw Wainwright, Hudson, Pallante on regular rest after Mikolas, then Liberatore on the 5th. That would give Wainwright 4 starts before the break, Liberatore only 3 instead of 4, and the last series vs Cincinnati before the break have Liberatore, Mikolas, Wainwright.
Also from what I read the other day Walsh to the 60 day could be an option too to clear a 40 man spot.
I would agree with Naile. Capel won’t get through. Don’t spit on Capel. Can play all 3 OF spots. In 180 AAA games, 690 PA, .273/.354/.472. Not a big power guy, but he’s got serviceable 4th OF written all over him. He had a really slow start this year in Memphis but had gotten hot and was up to .272/.361/.466 this season with 10 2B, 3 3B, 9 HR, 30 BB, 42 K, in 252 PA.
Not smart for the GM to throw the player under the bus like that, even if it is true.
Cardinals are known for keeping a lot of stuff behind closed doors and quiet. To me it says Mo and others are fed up with him doing things his way and probably many in house conversations have been had and he’s disregarded all of them and it’s maybe calling him out publicly to be a Cardinal first, without totally throwing him under a bus and airing all the dirty laundry.
Caple can play CF. Burleson can barely play LF. Also pretty sure Caple would have had to be added to 40 man before seasons end or he is a minor league free agent. Caple isn’t playing daily. If Burleson is up they want him to play.
Trying go trade him now would be a major selling low. Selling a player out with TJ surgery would be much easier. The recovery from elbow injuries to 100% has to be nearly 100%. Recovery from shoulder injuries to 100% is significantly lower, probably well less than half.
June 28, 2022 at 1:51 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 77 thread – Tuesday, June 28 vs. Marlins #189474Carlson hits RH (vs LHP) this season much better, so I don’t mind him moved up vs LHP. I wish Edman would just stay at SS. I also have a preference of hitting the “worst hitter” 8th, with the DH and using the 9 spot as another leadoff spot. Like Bader vs RHP. A guy who’s OBP probably isn’t high enough to warrant hitting 1 or 2, but is a good baserunning and a threat on the bases to create pressure with the top of the order. If Bader was healthy I like him 2 vs LHP, and use Sosa 9th or even Donovan depending how the rest of the order is set up.
Speaking of Bader though, his injury has me concerned. Planter fasciitis takes awhile to subside and if not properly healed, which can take 8-12 months, it’s likely to flare back up. I don’t know the extent of how bad his was, but it’s not pleasant or something that goes away quickly. Which is a problem for a CF and someone who is very reliant on his speed and legs.June 28, 2022 at 1:46 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 77 thread – Tuesday, June 28 vs. Marlins #1894731. June 28, 2022 at 1:45 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 77 thread – Tuesday, June 28 vs. Marlins #189472Dallas Keuchel anyone?
He’s a Diamondback
I’ll agree Gorman has looked better defensively than I expected. He’s going to be limited because he’s not quick. It’s something that gave Wong and Edman that gold glove range is that first step quickness. But with that said he definitely has not been bad at all. His glove work is much smoother than I thought he was going to be though. The only thing standing out me that is concerning so far is making off balance throws when he has time, which obviously increases the likelihood of errant throws, but that is something very fixable.
June 27, 2022 at 5:29 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 76 thread – Monday, June 27 vs. Marlins #189396Caple won’t sneak though waivers. Especially with Philly hurting for OF help. Naile has been around awhile and a St. Louis guy. He’s been throwing OK for Memphis in a variety of roles, maybe he takes advantage of the situation, or it’s at least a chance for a 29 year old to make his debut for the team he grew up cheering for and reward him for his hard work before having to clear him back out for someone else. But he can’t be worse than VerHagen or McFarland can he?
June 26, 2022 at 2:40 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 75 thread – Sunday, June 26 vs. Cubs #189267Contreras, as a 30 year old catcher, isn’t going to cost a team a king’s ransom, Bling. He would be a beautiful two year solution for us until Herrera was ready to take over the reigns. Without looking, I’m thinking a team could get Contreras signed for about 3 @ 40MM
I’ll pass on Contreras. He can hit, but there’s a reason he is DH a lot. He’s not much defending. And as I’ve said in other posts, the extra playoff teams could make this trade deadline prices much higher. There could be 16-20 buyers, with 2-4 of them maybe being more standing pat, leaving only 10 sellers. The teams that are bottom 5 in their league obviously aren’t real good teams and for a reason. So quality players are going to have many teams calling for them and the trade returns this year could be much much higher than anything we’ve seen previously.
I also think Contreras as a free agent will probably get 4 years and $70-80 million. Pitching is MUCH more of an issue than catcher right now.Contreras is not good defensively though.
Carlson is 23 and I’ll take him any day over O’Neill, and especially in 3 years when Carlson will be 26 and O’Neill 30. People turning on Carlson quickly reminds me how fast everyone turned on Drew and then he turned into the player a lot of people wanted, but I won’t complain about the trade that brought Wainwright.
Edman needs to stay in the IF.
2023
1. Edman SS
2. Donovan LF/UT
3. Goldschmidt 1B
4. Arenado 3B
5. Gorman 2B
6. Carlson RF
7. Burleson/Yepez DH/LF
8. Knizner/Herrera C
9. Bader CF
? IF, ? Utility, Burleson/Yepez, Knizner/Herrera
Gone: Pujols (retire), Molina (retire), Sosa (trade), O’Neill (trade), Dickerson (FA), DeJong (trade), Nootbaar (trade)
2024
???- how soon does Walker start entering the question of when he’s ready and when does he start play LF/RF to find him a position?2024
1. Edman SS
2.
3. Goldschmidt 1B – last year on deal
4. Arenado 3B
5. Gorman 2B
6. Carlson RF
7.
8. Knizner/Herrera C
9.
? – decision will have to be made on Bader
? – is Winn ready? Has he moved to CF? Leave him at SS, Edman position??
? – Where’s Walker? What position is he able to play?
? – How are Burleson, Yepez, Donovan still playing and factors in to the future?Things have a way of working themselves out and I’m happy with a lot of the youth they have right now, and hope they don’t sacrifice to much of it to add pitching.
Don’t get to far ahead of yourself. Things have a way of working themselves out, and way more prospects flame out than make it. Players age, get hurt and aren’t the same. The offense now is pretty darn good, just hope the pitching is helped. And you’ve got 2 guys in positions they’ve yet to play an inning at.
June 25, 2022 at 4:41 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 74 thread – Saturday, June 25 vs. Cubs #189173When they are conditioned for years that they are 1 inning, 20-25 pitch guys. Then yes 40 pitches is a lot and you could see him tiring and then hangs a slider.
If Cabrera is healthy you know it’s 1 inning each for the 3 of them. But they ask for more out of the other 2 because they have nobody else that is trusted. They’ve got to put trust in someone or find someone else they can trust.June 25, 2022 at 4:33 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #189168Hopefully if they do trade Yepez it is in a package for a starter (Montas or Castillo
I wouldn’t move Yepez. He and Burleson would be my LF or DH options next season. Obviously a sweet enough deal changes my mind, but realistically I’m holding on to him.
Also, I’d have no interest in Castillo. I don’t know much about him, but he’s always crossed me as “me first” type guy and not a guy who would embrace the Cardinal way. I could be wrong, but there’s a reason a guy like Tommy Pham was traded when he was having the seasons he was in STL and the return was as light as it was for that type player. He’s a clubhouse cancer and they wanted him gone, and it’s come to light much more since leaving STL. I could be wrong with Castillo, but just the way he seems to me, like Cueto.June 25, 2022 at 4:24 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 74 thread – Saturday, June 25 vs. Cubs #189165Why the hell is Sosa pinch running too. He’s proven many times he’s not a good base runner and just about cost them a base runner there dancing around.
June 25, 2022 at 4:21 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 74 thread – Saturday, June 25 vs. Cubs #189164Not Gio’s fault they are asking him to throw 40 pitches and go 2 innings instead of having more than 3, now 2 with Cabrera out, pitchers that can get outs. The Cubs are terrible and I’d take Wick or Martin or definitely Effross or Robertson over most of the Cardinal relievers.
June 25, 2022 at 4:06 pm in reply to: Paul DeJong was drafted as a catcher – could he return as one #189162He wasn’t drafted as a Catcher. At Illinois State as a Freshman he played 8 C, 30 2B, 2 SS. As a Sophomore he played 6 C, 34 2B, 19 3B, 2 SS. Then summer league was primarily a 3B, getting some time in RF and 2B. As a Junior he played 15 C, 27 2B, 20 3B, 4 RF. After his Jr. year is when he was drafted by the cardinals and has NEVER caught again and was primarily a 3B (some 2B and SS) until 2017 when he was moved to SS and also the year he made his MLB debut and has been almost solely a SS except for that 2017 year when he saw some time at 2B.
Don’t listen to Dan’s stories about how he was a Catcher in college and moved to SS. Yes he did some catching in college, but has always been an IF, and if he’s back in a St. Louis Cardinals uniform this season it’s probably as a utility IF because they trade Sosa to get help in this terrible and thin bullpen.June 24, 2022 at 9:17 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 73 thread – Friday, June 24 vs. Cubs #189109Donovan on 3-2 strikes out looking and the Cards rookie doesn’t like the call at all….and for good reason.
That was no joke. That ball was at least 4 inches outside. Hendricks had gotten a lot of called strikes well out of the zone on both sides, up, and down. There was a called strike 1 on a curveball to Knizner earlier in the game the was well high.
June 24, 2022 at 7:49 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #189085The thing that’s going to be interesting as the deadline nears is what the extra playoff teams do to the trade market.
There are going to be way more buyers than sellers, so it’s probably going to be like the used car market right now. Not a lot available, and what’s nice is going to cost a heck of a lot. Realistically there are probably going to be 5 sellers from each league, and obviously those teams are losing for a reason and valuable players aren’t going to be readily available and I think the selling teams are going to be able to ask for higher returns than they have previously.June 24, 2022 at 7:15 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 73 thread – Friday, June 24 vs. Cubs #189074Jeez! I thought Dan annoyed me. This game is going to be watched on mute!! Luckily the wife is an apple phone user and was able to use her ID to log in to watch, but definitely not listen. Dan, I’ll never speak ill of you again.
June 24, 2022 at 5:32 am in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 73 thread – Friday, June 24 vs. Cubs #189020I don’t know how he grades out defensively. To me there is quite a bit of work to do. He’s not real smooth back there, and that’s not comparing him to Molinaz, that’s comparing him to Knizner. His D doesn’t look bad, but he’s clearly going to have to hit and isn’t a defensive first catcher.
June 23, 2022 at 1:39 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 72 thread – Thursday, June 23 at Brewers #188977I know there has been lots of talk about getting rid of DeJong, but I really think his contract is going to prohibit that. He has the ability to play 2B and 3B, and play by far mostly 3B in the minors. I wondered if they would include Sosa in a trade to beef up the pen, and bring DeJong back up as a utility IF.
