Trevor Rosenthal threw for 18 teams in a showcase yesterday. I hope the Cardinals were 1 of the 18 there as I’m tired of seeing VerHagen, Wittgren, MxFarland, Whitley/Walsh/whoever in late game situations or really in games at all. If he’s got anything left in his shoulder he should be an upgrade over anyone in the pen outside the main 3.

Not a chance I’d do that.
The need for SP isn’t that desperate. If it gets closer to the deadline and the need for SP is there, then Kyle Gibson, Corey Knebel, Brad Hand should be available, Eovaldi and Strahm could be available determining how Boston plays the next 2 months, KC could blow things up and Staumont could possibly be had, and all at much less of a cost. I know the pen ranks well, but it’s carried by the back 3 heavy. Pallante has pitched well, but having him in a longer role could be better and upgrades could be made over VerHagen, Wittgren, McFarland, and the Whitley/Walsh/Fernandez, whoever else they’ve put in there and much to me much more needed than SP at this moment.
To me O’Neill, Nootbaar, DeJong, Oviedo, Woodford, Fernandez all should or could go and Wittgren and McFarland need replaced, and the only reason I don’t include VerHagen is they gave him a 2 year deal and I don’t see them giving up yet. Giving something like:
    Vs RHP
    Edman SS
    Donovan LF
    Goldschmidt 1B
    Arenado 3B
    Gorman 2B
    Yepez DH
    Carlson RF
    Knizner C
    Bader CF
    Sosa, Pujols, Dickerson, Molina
    Vs LHP
    Edman 2B
    Bader CF
    Goldschmidt 1B
    Arenado 3B
    Pujols DH
    Yepez LF
    Carlson RF
    Knizner C
    Sosa SS
    Donovan, Gorman, Dickerson, Molina

Wainwright, Flaherty, Matz (Gibson if a trade is needed), Mikolas, Hudson

VerHagen, Pallante, Staumont, Hand, Knebel, Cabrera, Gallegos, Helsley

I vote never on O’Neill. Just let Donovan play LF and Yepez DH and vs. LHP Yepez in LF and Pujols DH.

Rumor has it Oakland is wanting a lot for Montas and that’s why he wasn’t traded in the off season.
    2019- Current
    Montas: 70 GS, 400 2/3 ip, 3.46 ERA, 1.178 WHIP, 8.0 H/9, 1.0 HR/9, 2.7 BB/9, 9.9 K/9
Montas just turned 29 in March and is controlled through arbitration through 2023.

    2019-2021
    Berrios: 76 GS, 455 1/3 ip, 3.66 ERA, 1.168 WHIP, 8.1 H/9, 1.1 HR/9, 2.4 B/9, 9.2 K/9
Berrios just turned 28 last week. And while the stats include the 12 starts he made in Toronto after the trade, when he was traded from Minnesota to Toronto he was 27 with 1.5 years of team control and has since gotten a 7 year $131 million extension.

Minnesota got Toronto’s #2 (SS/CF) and #4 (SP) prospects for Berrios. While Montas is 2 years older (at time of trade) he has very similar, if not better stats, having a good year, and with the same amount of team control.

I think Montas costs Nootbaar, McGreevy, and Gaceffo or Burleson, McGreevy/Graceffo, and a 3rd lower prospect to get a deal done and you have to figure any team in contention is going to be calling and Oakland may like another prospect more.
I also don’t think the Cardinals make a move for a SP until they absolutely have to and could just be another Lester or Haap. They will continue to try to piece together the rotation waiting on Flaherty and Matz to get healthy and if they need to plug at the deadline they will look more along the lines Eovaldi, Kyle Gibson, Jordan Lyles or Mike Minor (if he gets healthy) and guys who are Free agents after the year that won’t cost them Burleson or Yepez or Graceffo, or other top names they don’t want to see go. I still say acquiring Eovaldi, or any SP, in a deal that includes DeJong, along like lines of Lackey for Craig and Kelly, might be a smart move. But we’ll see. Maybe they can work something including DeJong with Detroit for Andrew Chafin since Detroit has absolutely no production from their IF and STL could use a 2nd LHP since McFarland isn’t getting the job done. Which is also why I mentioned Minor, if healthy, because he’s had success as a reliever and if he plugs the rotation short term until others a healthy he could work as a 2nd LH reliever possibly. But health is a big “if” with him right now.

Funny hearing Danny talk to highly of McCutchen and I know a few people who would say the opposite. One worked in a capacity for the Phillies in 2020 and said he was a complete turd to the staff (clubbies, cooks, other staff). Said Arrieta was one of the most respectful people to all of them and the one that always got me was that Harper was always very polite to the staff.

With the lefty on the mound, I am curious what the lineup will look like.

I suspect Edman, Goldschmidt, arenado, Pujols, Yepez, Bader, Dickerson, Knizner, Sosa.
If Molina is activated then I’d expect him probably 6th and everyone moved down since that’s what they like to do for whatever reason. But we’ll see shortly.

Does anybody else here on this forum beside me realize how mis-managed the game was in the Cardinal 10th?

I didn’t think it was awful, but definitely questionable. When Pujols was announced for Knizner I said aloud “why?”. I trust Knizner against a RHP way more. Then when they brought the LHP in to face Gorman, Marmol countered with Sosa. I believe that was the right move, but if he would have had Pujols still on the bench it would have been a much better time to use him.

And I concede that Edman looks good at SS.

I’m glad. I knew he’d be at least above average and he’s made 2 plays that tell me he’s just fine over there. His arm strength isn’t great, but it’s acceptable and I love how he plays.
Love Donovan too and the difference he’s made to the team. He was definitely tested in RF last night. There was 1 play I thought he looked out of position, then in the 10th made a very nice play on a sinking liner.

Berrios is a pitcher I wish the Cardinals would have tried to get. I really like him, would compliment our team well. They probably will get him but will probably be way past his prime.

Cardinals were rumored to be in pretty heavy talks with Minnesota last year for him, but Toronto gave up 2 highly touted prospects for him. Martin is a IF/CF who I believe was #2 in their system and SP Woods Richardson was #4. Guess the Cardinals said it wasn’t worth that.

Cardinals were rumored to be in heavy on the trade talks for him last season. Kinda the reason I thought they may go after Montas as he’s a very similar pitcher.

The injury prevention for pitchers hitting is better with the DH, the game is worse. I don’t like it a bit, but have accepted it and won’t complain too much about it. They will claim injury prevention, but it’s always just been a way to keep aging players who still can hit but can’t run or play defense in the game…Pujols, Nelson Cruz, so on are the only beneficiaries of DH, as they keep getting paid and not sitting at home.

There not enough on there for me to keep it all the time. Luckily I still have it this month and can watch today. Already paying DirecTV Stream $100 and Netflix is $16. If I could get the Cardinals and Indiana basketball without having to have DirecTV, or switching to just as expensive Spectrum, then I’d cancel “cable” and have multiple streaming services, but definitely not paying more than I already have to.

Edman just mad a play that proves he’s above average SS, even if he was basically playing 2B with the shift, if Goldschmidt was at 1B it was an out. Throw was wide and Yepez didn’t come up with it.

There is a limited library that is free, their full ad supported library library $5/month, and then there is a ad free one thats somewhere around $12-15/month. I only know because I get the $5 one when Yellowstone is added for a month and then cancel it.
And yes a paid version is required to watch today.
Baseball REALLY needs to fix their TV and all these streaming services are it, unless 1 had complete exclusive rights and you could watch any game you choose without blackouts. There are only 2 services that carry Bally Sports, DirecTV and Spectrum, both costing $100+/month, them have to have Peacock to watch today, Apple if I wanted to watch Friday and I refuse to give Apple a dime so I wouldn’t do that. It’s just frustrating as can be.
