I know it isn’t Bill and Mo’s way to eat a lot of money, but if you could get a good prospect or #2 starter, would you pay down big $ like the Mets did with Scherzer/Verlander to trade Contreras to a team that is a better fit.
My fear is we get back within 5 or 6 and Mo decides this is the team he knew we were all along and nibbles around the edges thinking we are a playoff team. Time to take (semi) big swings, now and in the off season.
I think part of their problem is their drafting strategy. The institutional mindset seems to be selecting high floor but low ceiling guys, never swinging for the fences. This is largely due to their draft position, but even in international signings, (both pitching and positional), they seem to spread around their cash on a large number of medium level prospects instead of targeting 1 or 2 top players.
That could and should be 80,000/1 and I still wouldn’t put up $10.00.
Lots of speculation that Arenado is disgruntled. If so, why is he disgruntled? It made the news in the off-season that Mo traveled to see him about his opt out clause. If he was just promised him another year/more money, he has no one to blame but himself. If Mo promised additions to keep this club as a contender, he has every right to be disgruntled.
Adding Contreras at catcher was supposed to be a big thing, but so far it doesn’t look good. And let’s face it we needed pitching more than a catcher. You can tell Willson cares and the move from catcher to OF/DH hurt his confidence at the plate. Hopefully he comes around. How could they not have an idea on the catching issues? This just becomes another in the line of Mo clusters on evaluating free agents and players in his system.
Big ticket guys (Over 10 million signing):
Decent pickups: Mikolas – 2 good years, 2 injured. Peralta – 1 excellent year, 1 good, 2 bad. So far, 4 good years total, 4 bad for $138 million per Baseball Reference.
Bad pickups: Leake, Fowler, Matz, Miller, Cecil, Holland and Gregorson. No good years… $288 million or so…
Great trades: Goldy and Arenado
Bad trades: Gallen and Alcantera, Arozerena, Garcia, any others.
The problem with improving this team is letting Mo do it.
We know what the answer will probably be: Fire Girsch, fire Marmol, hire 2 more yes men, wash rinse, repeat. A College AD gets to fire 2 coaches for the big money sports. On the second hire his butt is on the hot seat. Mo is on his 3rd manager. How many more chances does he get?

On a pace for 56 wins… Yikes!!!
March 27, 2023 at 8:15 pm in reply to: Make your BOLD predictions for the 2023 St Louis Cardinals here!! #214895Matz will be the Cardinals best pitcher this year, winning about 17 games.
Cardinals will just miss out on the playoffs after losing their final game.
After the loss, Mo presents evidence to the Commissioner that the Padres and Tatis violated terms of his punishment after breaking training camp by maintaining unauthorized contact with the team prior to the end of his suspension. The commissioner disqualifies the Padres from playoff participation and inserts the Cards to take their place.
Cardinals get hot and Matz wins the World Series MVP.
Mo is arrested in downtown St Louis during the victory parade. Charges are Mo illegally obtained the Tatis information via corporate espionage and he had conspired for months to use this information if necessary to get the Cards in the playoffs.
In a press conference, the Justice Department explains the charges against Mo and a real shocker comes to light. Padres’ coach Mike Shildt is the Fed’s key witness against Mo.
Commissioner strips Cards and Matz of WS Trophy and MVP Award.
I want this to happen and then the movie.
Stanley Tucci (without glasses) as John Mozeliak
Clint Eastwood as Bill DeWitt Jr.
Jimmy Uso as Fernando Tatis Jr.
Stanley Tucci in a double role as Mike Schildt (Wig, glasses and a baseball cap.)
Ezra Miller as Stephen Matz
James Spader as Rob Manfred
Ezra Miller as Stephen MatzI am not for trading prospects just to be trading prospects. I am willing to trade prospects to fill obvious needs, and we have an obvious need of a top of the rotation starter. (Wishful thinking, a 1 and a strong 3, as only Matz is signed for next year).
January 31, 2023 at 10:14 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #211929Per MLB Trade Rumors, the Braves may not be likely to extend Max Fried. As we really need a #1.
Is there anyone you wouldn’t offer for him or another ace?
I would probably say no to Walker, pretty much anyone else is available, depending on the final deal.
Not sure I would deal Walker and Wynn together in any deal. Though, you have to give to get.
I agree. I think Hudson could be the biggest surprise this year. 2nd year back for TJ and he admits that he gets too much into his own head thinking things out on the mound. Was much better in AAA with the pitch clock and I think that helps him in the bigs now.
Per MLB.com
In addition to Lopez at $500,000
Cardinals
Bracewell Taveras, SS, D.R. — $450,000
Ruben Menes, RHP, D.R. — $400,000
Angel Gil, OF, D.R., $375,000Last actual Cardinal rumor, (not news), on MLB Trade Rumors, Dec 14th about not meetign Carlos Rondon’s asking price. I believe the front office is on college winter break until next week or the week after.
I would take Bauer the pitcher, but unfortunately he comes with Bauer the human being. Pass…

December 10, 2022 at 8:31 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #208812Seems like a lot of: We cant trade X, we can’t trade Y.
Is there any body you would not trade? I would be willing to trade ANYBODY for the right return.
Yeah, MLTV and Trade Rumors always over value prospects. Some you hit on some you don’t.
A running joke in every Trade Rumors chat for 5 years has been about what the Angels could get for Jo Adell. “The Angels are not trading Jo Adell”. Guess what, they should have traded Jo Adell.
I like our players, once a Cardinal, always a Cardinal. But if you want to upgrade in any way, you have to give to get.
I like this move, but don’t love it. Could turn into love if they use some of that prospect capital to get a #1/2 starter.
Short of them having a time machine to turn Waino back to a 30 year old, we have a bunch of #3/4 starters. We are 6 -7 deep, but none of them scare a team.
Heck, even go 5 players, lol. Some almost can’t be traded due to how much they make.
Just curious, who would you NOT trade (majors and Minors combined)? Limit 3. It seems everyone wants the Cardinals to upgrade, but every player is off limits or the ask is too high?
Mo went to meet Arenado before he declined opting out. Do you think he promised upgrades? If this comes to a ‘meh’ off season, do you think Nolan will complain?
Kind of hoping rumors are true about Murphy and Braves. I would like Murphy in a Cards uniform, but if price is huge, maybe Contreras (The Younger) or d’Arnaud would be a wiser play.
Sorry, but Kirk scares me. 3 inches shorter and 40 pounds heavier than Yadi? Not good for someone who squats half the game.
Whelp, now looking at the new link, my idea was wrong, lol/
