That is happens when a person on social media creates a semi-professional sounding username but does not read before he “reports”… It is that time of year again!

Another “expert” in his own mind. Actually a good question though, there is a target on his back as some people will tell you. I’m on his side simply because he is one of our guys (draftee).

Just a good reminder, especially this time of year, to go back to the original source. Even when I see MLBTR tweet some news, I go to their site and click on the source they are quoting to read what was originally written. (It is great they provide the links.) I am not picking on MLBTR as they are good at getting it right. But sometimes news is “enhanced”, whether by accident or design…

$27M a year is a decent chunk of change, but the overall commitment is several million less per year and a year shorter than most expected. For the potential, it’s not a bad deal at all. I would have liked to see the Cards in at that price. Remember when Lester went for 6/$155M over eight years ago? Lester was a little more accomplished than Rodon at the same age, with a little better health record…but again that was many years ago. This one could be a steal.

sorry…i don’t see him as worth 27m per year…not enough established and continued success

Go with what we have if these are the prices…then at the deadline snag what you need and trust the pitching evaluation of your scouts during the year

it has worked so far…last two years we snagged exactly the right pieces to make runs and have solid depth at pitching

as for the playoffs…that’s the only rub…but in the end you still need a couple guys you can count on…Quintana was that last year and we went out got him…that’s not the types you shoudl be hoping to get at the deadline (unless you keep them)

We have rolled the dice last 2 years and it worked…i thought with the contracts ending soon we would go big for high price established ace (or young stars)… but no (and maybe we will trade for one…still a chance at that)….or at the least re-sign Quintana (basically to the deal he got) to kick the can a bit down the road a little…

I like Mikolas as our Ace right now…Jack can still be one… MOntgomeery is solid…Waino will still wo us for half the year at least…Matz and Hudson are fine….hope someone else makes strides from the others

I’d feel a lot better with Quintana right now…and even better with an established Ace… but Rodon is not that

How could it be said Hudson is fine? We have no idea if he’s fine. We know Jack’s arm held up an inning at a time for a few games. We don’t know if Matz can stay healthy. We don’t know what Wainwright’s problem actually was. Montgomery’s history is a ,500 pitcher with a higher ERA than what we saw for a partial season. Mikolos does indeed seem to be fine. That’s the non-rose colored glasses view of reality.

Reminds me of President Muffley speaking with Soviet Premier Dimitri on the hotline in the film Dr. Strangelove…”Well, it’s good that you’re fine and I’m fine. I agree with you, Dimitri. It’s great to be fine. Now then, Dmitri. You know how we’ve always talked about something going wrong with the bomb?”

Well..we arent going to sign 4 new starters… if you think they are going into the year with 4 new starters you are kidding yourself and your expectations are out of control

    -Mikolas is fine
-Jack was injured..came back and had moments… no reason to believe he can’t be better with good offseason
-Waino is old…got tired by the end of the year….why assume it is worse if you wont assume it could be better
-Matz…was injured..came back and filled his role fine…he’s not getting cut so he’s gonna get a shot
-Hudson..ups and downs last year…no reason he cant figure it out
-Montgomery…seems a solid option for innings and decent pitching
-Libertore…first time through looked not so ggreat….but so what…not everyone figures it out immeditaley

Mikolas looks like dirt after he first came back from injury…then after a little time..he was fine and then even good to great

Would a high end starter help? sure…but 27m, for Rodon..who has had his share of terrible years and injuries…doesnt seem a fit at that price point..
Quintana seems a missed opportunity…but i have to trust that means they a re looking for a trade…or have received really positive feedback about the arms they have and their offseason routines

For better or worse professional baseball people for the Cardinals are making decisions and we don’t know all the reasoning…what i do know is that the last two years they recognized issues and addressed them during the season…was it enough? nope…but i cant say they didnt make smart choices that ended in good results.

I don’t what some of you expect to happen every year…total tear downs and rebuilds based on last year’s production alone?

Whatever…i have my fair share of pessimism from time to time… but because we dont make one move deciding the failure of that move is justified by being overly pessimistic about everything else to justify your opinion seems pretty reactionary

I am not rose colored glasses here…i see missed opportunities all over the place…but i am not going to throw away my optimism for players just to quench my disappointment’s thirst

Since we all agree there are definitely question marks, could we all agree there are plenty of exciting possibilities?
Perhaps an interesting take would be to assume your version of the most likely catastrophe, and then your versions of the best case scenario.
I’ll go first: Matz rehabs knee, but an altered motion results in a bad shoulder. Jack never feels quite right and begins on injured list.
Pallante picks right up and becomes our very own version of Zach Gallen. Liberatore’s command is greatly improved after great spring and becomes Steve Carlton.
    See…everything’s gonna be all right.

Here’s a prediction…Woodford will be in the rotation… and by year’s end, it won’t be a discussion that he will be part of it the following year. He will be counted on.

I disagree. Do not make the mistake of thinking that results can override the metrics. That is not how Derangement Analytica works. Jake’s unexciting K rate and lack of high 90s FB mean he will not get MLB hitters out whether he actually gets them out or not. That is how it works. Attrition may mean he fills in until someone the computer approves of is available.

    BB –
When a pitcher is a pitcher and not just a thrower, he knows how to get batters out by going inside and out, up and down, changing speeds, etc.
He doesn’t have to be able to throw the ball through the wall. Waino is an example of that. On 48 innings pitched in 2022 at the major league level, Woodford’s ERA was 2.23. His WHIP was 1.117.

There is another one, now I can’t find it but it was outwardly legit, connecting some imaginary dots to come up with how the Cardinals have been dangling Carlson and the Dodgers are sniffing around.

The premise is two fold. First, Carlson’s late season injury related fade turned the FO from sold on him enough to trade Bader to he’s not in the picture going forward. Second, the FO is fine with Nootbaar as the CF of the future, and envisions a future OF of Walker, Burleson and Nootbaar.

A moment’s sober reflection tells me that both are nonsense. The FO remains sold on Carlson, and Noot is a corner who can cover CF quite respectably, but not the level of CF defense the Cardinals want day in and day out all year long.

I couldn’t tell if you were speaking of Hudson or Woodford Bling, about the analytics.
One has been given every opportunity possible, the other, none.

The Cardinals were reportedly in on the big shortstops when they were going after Murphy. After signing Contreras the plan of attack changed. Apparently Ryan didn’t get the memo.

If a guy’s got the right boxes checked on the spreadsheet, it takes a long time for reality to catch up. (see Junior Fernandez). If the boxes aren’t checked, reality doesn’t matter. Nobody today would have given John Tudor the time of day.

Carpenter 2 years/12 with the Padres. Nice comeback…. maybe he just needed out of STL. It should of happened two years sooner. A lot of fans remember his horrible years and forget his large contributions prior to those. He was the team’s MVP at one time.
