no one should think ANY rotation can keep up what we have seen over the past week+. It is a great run, but what this team actually looks like is undoubtedly less than what we have seen from the rotation this past week…the offense still seems too wishy washy…it needs one more good bat…and the rotation probably needs a good to great arm to make a real dent in postseason hopes

Problem is, they will want a fortune for him on name recognition alone.

I will take any upgrade to the outfield at this point, but i think the guys we will be looking at are

Peralta, Haniger…maybe Marte

Really… Peralta seems the one to target…still under the radar, and with Haniger being on such a tear right now i think his value might be inflated a bit…

Peralta is a rental and FA in the offseason…and we have done deals with ARZ (and they have Gallen via MIA via us)… so i think they know what they like in the Cards system

And with the history of trades for players we then convince to re-sign early or we take advantage of the pre free agency time, Peralta seems to fit those type of plans

Even if Bader comes back and hits ok, i don’t think anyone thinks he has “figured it out” and will all of a sudden be an impact hitter (let alone hit lefthanded or for much power)

Peralta is a lefty, good contact, solid to good defense and big arm, runs ok…i think we could re-sign him to a fair and shorter contract as his age is a bit old…

To me Peralta checks all the boxes of a player we need, at a position we have uncertainty for the future as it comes to offensive production (and that we don’t have any kids coming any time close so re-signing him makes sense)

He will cost a bit to do in-season especially if early…BUT the value lost in prospects can be mitigated if we re-sign him which is typical Moz behavior and justification

What will he cost? More if it happens early…but it probably won’t, but he is solid bat that any team could justify trading for so it won’t be cheap and will probably hurt a bit more than we like…

I’d see if we could create a deal around Rondon (pitcher) and maybe one of the young OFers like Capel, and maybe another lower level pitcher

Or maybe we could try to see their interest in DPerez…maybe see how much they value Whitley?

Peralta isn’t Goldy so the level of Weaver, Kelly, Young isn’t needed…and that was also for a full season before FA for Goldy…and we still had to pay for Goldy…

I feel like one good-high level young player ready to go and a lesser prospect…or 2 pretty good prospects, and a flier thrown in

As much as i’d like Haniger, Gallo, or even Judge…i don’t feel Moz has the stomach to deal any top prospects right now, at least not for a rental hitter like Peralta

Now…i DO think he might part with a bigger guy (and he’d have to) for Scherzer though…value in-season and the extra benefit to negotiate an extension without others interfering…yeah that has a lot of value to Moz i think…especially if he has determined that the Cards will target Max in the offseason (which they should)

Peralta + Scherzer in season…makes this team contender…and both could be re-signed behind the scenes without the public and rumors flying around getting in the way…both are vets have connection to the system or StL…and woudl fill gaps in the staff and outfield to allow for younger players to develop

I hate when we waste good pitching performances…but especially ones by Waino who only has so many left

truly spectacular from him. 2 solo HRs is pretty impressive without the complete game

I dont see how anyone thinks he is not at least our 2nd best starting pitcher PERIOD…and definitely our most clutch pitcher

I could care less about hype and projections and age

Waino and Yadi are two of our top players on this team and until they show us they are not, they should be re-signed and paid accordingly until THEY want to leave

I am not sure we have another starter who could let alone would even pitch a complete game at this point

I also want Carlson in the 2 hole, him in the 5 hole to me puts MORE pressure on him to hit for power as opposed to use his great skills to get on, he seems power happy and i get it…he has good power, but i think we want more people on in front of our 2 big guns

Today on paper looks like a shutout at best, flirting with a no hitter or 3 or under hit fest. 6 7 8 9 is almost half the lineup and ABs for the game…and they are not imposing in the slightest right now, so that is basically half the game as relatively easy for perhaps the best pitcher of this generation to face

I want so bad to be wrong, and see Justin turn on Max and Knizner show us his bat

I don’t see a Cardinals outfield that is so full that the team shouldn’t be looking at multiple targets.

-Bader should be a 4/5th OF used for defense and running, that is a fine role
-ONeill is probably a bench power bat and defensive replacement with speed, good role
-Williams and Thomas are AAAA and injury depth that is a tough gig to have but still pays well

-Gallo would be the power lefty we need that Carp can’t provide, he is also young and has a great glove
-Haniger is the solid but unspectacular OF with an all around game but his age limits long term investment, which is fine because you WANT those young OFers in the minors seeing a spot opening up and you WANT the veterans to fight hard knowing they have kids on their heels

-Scherzer via trade this year, or in offseason is the obvious move and probably with Wainwright moving on provides us with the veteran leadership the starters need

Problem is, we knew this in the offseason before this year. We knew we had rotation quality depth issues, and we knew we needed at least more than 1 bat (Arenado)

-We were sold on the idea that we have SO many options that it will all work out for the rotation, so far Jack and Waino have shown up…nobody else seems ready or able
-We were sold on 5 untested OFers being able to produce 3 solid OFers of production, Carlson is being who he probably should be…but everyone else is pretty much who they are hurt, ineffective, not ready, haven’t gotten better

Arenado was a great get…especially for the price…but thinking that is all that was wrong with the offense is ignorant and far too prideful about the signings of Carp, and putting Bader on pedestal as the future of StL baseball a couple years back

Edman seems a starter after 1 full year of games now…and seems to have more upside than i thought, as i thought he’d be better as super sub. But Bader and ONeill are just not starters, which sucks…because the best versions of them would be pretty incredible to watch

But Goldy, Arenado, Yadi all get older every day and we waste the high value you we have given them by waiting to make moves to take advantage of that spent capital

I’d trade for Haniger or Peralta now…both of those teams know they are not in their plans for the future and the divisions are not theirs right now, then look at Marte or Gallo at the deadline

Would it cost a bit more to go early? Maybe…I mean we already saw Arcia traded from Milwaukee

Anibal Sanchez, Porcello are both available…and both could eat some innings…woudl they be a lot better than what we have? maybe not by much BUT it woudl allow us to send guys to Memphis or the alternate site to work on things instead of right now, where it seems we dont have depth enough to make a move beyond Woodford or Whitley.

Perhaps with a couple of veterans like that, we coudl actually wait it out until Thompson, Oviedo, Libertore are able to provide real innings

To bring in two OFers in the season would eat into our farm more…but we dont really have OF depth coming to help any time soon… Haniger and Gallo seem perfect ages to allow Capel, Nootbaar, Thorres and the gang to get better

sign Scherzer in the offseason, bring the guy home and go with:

ONeill wasn’t hitting all tat well before he got hurt…and Bader wasnt hitting either… while i am hopeful for both of their offensive output, even if they both hit better is that really impact enough to make a difference?

Why not make a move NOW to get an OF hitter, and if we have too much offense from the outfield then that is an awesome problem t to have….waiting 2 months for Bader to come back and have time to prove he can or cant hit or the trade deadline could put us in a position where we can’t bring anything that will move the needle enough

Gallo is who he is, but so far this year he seems to have a different approach, he has 18 Ks but 15 walks. That is not terrible.

Haniger makes sense too, Marte on an expiring deal does as well. PEralta is my other look

My issue is that, waiting until the trade deadline is going to be too late for this team to get production out of the OF.

They need to make a move now, period. I don’t care that Bader isn’t in there or not. They need better depth and better production period, and they need it immediately.

Who cares if Bader comes back and hits a bit better, do we really expect him to be impact? no. Tyler may be better, but we need more than hopes and dreams for production.

And why would it be a bad thing to have depth in the OF with some offensive output?

Look at the Reds, they got Nyquin for nothing and he is lighting it up, and he is their 4th OF at best, maybe 5th. And they still have Akiyama who has yet to play?

Waiting another month to get Bader back, THEN seeing if he hits (which he hasnt been anyway) means probably 2 months before we even consider a move.

Why not get someone RIGHT NOW, then have Bader in your back pocket for pushing the defense and even offense of the players

I mean, Carlson is in the Rasmus stage now…he has NO competition and he knows it…he is hopefully going to work out, but he knows he isn’t getting benched any time soon. With or without Bader and ONeill. Because there is not enough talent to even force him to the minors to work on things.

Even last year he had to go down, because he wasn’t performing. We can’t even afford TO send him down as we can’t even cover the OF

Sign Puig and hope he is healthy and not a detriment…cut him if he is a problem, sign Sean Rodriguez and hope he is better

Minor league deals, maybe with appearance bonuses, and give them a shot. IF they fail, then we are right back where we were.

Puig and Porcello could walk into Starting roles as soon as they show they are fit, if they do well, they’d be basically guaranteeing future money. If they fail, they lose another year of work and become forgotten quicker

I think both want to play more, we can give them that chance. And if they do well, the Cardinals are wlel known for rewarding that

You are probably right about in-season for Scherzer or Conforto…though i do think saving SOME money for the Nats is a real thing and perhaps they move him earlier just to save some money. It’s a tough call because he is gone after the season for him, they undoubtedly get a compensation pick, but i think they’d want to capitalize on him in season for a trade even in a chance for the playoffs for them. As long as Stras is healthy IMO.

Conforto is similar, but i think they might re-sign him

As for in-season batters…the ones i listed are my options which i think are all MAJOR upgrades to the offense

As for pitchers, it’s always tougher… but i think you look to COL and German Marquez, i like Matt Boyd and DET is still building, maybe Quintana or Heaney from LAA

but there really isnt a Scherzer type available IMO, unless we look at the Reds and with them being in the division I don’t see it happening…Gray or Castillo would be great fits IMO….

Maybe inquire on Montas from OAK?

-I prefer the versatility, contact, speed, enough power and leadoff skills of Merrifield, but he is probably the most expensive in terms of what it will take to get him

-Peralta’s bat has just enough pop and he makes good contact and plays well in the OF still, seems available and ARZ has a big hill to climb to get out of that division

-Gallo is a great OFer big arm, and loads of power, and strikeouts, but enough walks, and he is young. Probably will take a bit more to get him though…but i haev to imagine a young good SP and more might be enough

-Marte, makes contact, good power, still can play OF well, still has speed. Nice versatile hitter who
will not hurt us in the OF or where we hit him. Expensive contract but we’d only pay prorated and maybe could get a deal on that depending on our prospects going the other way… MIA knows our players from being so close in ST.

-Scherzer….not sure what it takes to get him, but he is what we lack and even prorated his salary after a trade will be hefty…if WAS wants to save some money the sooner they deal the better

Scherzer plus Marte let’s us compete now and gives us something to think about in the offseason about bringing them back

Peralta or Merrifield are a 2-3yr cost effective solution

Gallo is an investment, and you take the .200 average if you get those 40 HRs and good defense. gmable, but big upside

Only other guy i’d throw out for giggles is Haniger form the M’s. He has missed time with freak injuries, but was a solid player before and if healthy is still probably solid. He was older when he came up so he is already older. I wonder if he is available as they make room for Kellenic and Rodriguez

Regardless, it will cost youth to get these fixes, but to take max worth out of the Goldy and Arenado deals we have to win NOW

We can afford to lose some youth pitching IMO as we create it pretty consistently. Creating Ace’s is tougher as we seem better at 2-3 types and 5-6 types.

It’s a big ask to bring in two major contributors, but it is what the team lacks, and we knew it coming in.

Scherzer is a rental, which paves the way for a future deal. Marte could be the same Or if yo uwant more value for your youth lost, then the limited but high value of Peralta or Merrifield shoudl give you at least 2 years of solid production at discount pricing. If you want Bader’s average and glove, but with 40HR’s for a few years well Gallo is your man.

I read on the PD Shildt said he wasn’t sure they’d hit the 85% taken threshold that would allow them to loosen some COVID restrictions. Seems like that is more than one and indicative of this being an issue in the clubhouse as their personal decisions will impact the ability of the team to do everything from practice to changing to traveling to eating. All this selfishness so they can not take a vaccine that exists to help not hurt others and given them back their lifestyles and inch closer to normalcy.

So will those who choose not to get vaccine be still required to test every day? Will the rest of the team still be tested as well? The Vaccine is not 100% effective and if not everyone on the team is vaccinated then i don’t see how any of this really matters to how the game is played. I guess it some people’s desires and right to possibly endanger others for their own personal need, but with that attitude nothign changes and no confidence in safety can be achieved.

I don’t see how disclosure of medical condition for testing and subsequent quarantine for COVID is somehow totally fine to these people, but getting a vaccine and/or disclosing your vaccination status is not.

So, Id Wainwright has Ebola he is allowed to not report it, not get it treated even if there was a way to mitigate it and hurt everyone around him with no consequences. Plus, no one is allowed to NOT let him play or not because he is sick or potentially sick. They can’t even force them to take a vaccine or medication to fix it.

Yet, they are all forced to take anti doping testing at any time and are booted out of the league if they do not comply with the negative tests. And all of that is for something that only endangers the stats and “fair play” of the game. Yet, for something that can literally kill it’s players, staff, and fans and is also an international epidemic, they can’t be forced to mitigate that risk?

They should all be vaccinated by rule or you should have proof of vaccination, recent infection, or negative test (from earlier that day) to be a player, staff, or in the stands as employee or fan of baseball. period.

Do that, and we can return to normal in baseball, don’t and more will die and get sick and the sport and economics and social help will suffer. Personal choice only should matter if that choice does not endanger others. By not being vaccinated or tested every day before you report to work, you are endangering other people.

I am happy the team is being vaccinated, but all it takes is one member to not for it to not matter and not change anything.

The players “individual right to not take the vaccine” is hypocritical as their “individual rights” don’t matter when it comes to so many other ailments and other requirements.

Stop trying to solve this issue with half measures. Make it a rule, get it done, and get back to “normal”. If you don’t like it, then find another league to play in or sport to watch in person that does not care about the well being of it’s members and fans.

I’m worried about the whole offense

Have we had even ONE ST game where a guy just “went off”…maybe Nogowski’s 3 hit game is the closest thing, maybe an early Oneill game… but other than that anything exciting? I mean i don’t care if it is just teeing off on a minor leaguer. nothing. Out side of an occasional HR, which is not much different than what the offense was last year

Yes I am supposed to be saying… “it’s just Spring Training”…but look at other teams…star players usually at least have a couple games where they look like stars…even in spring training… and that has nothign to do with the “non-stars” who show up for a couple days

At least Edman showed up to claim the leadoff spot and ONeill gave us hope for 2 spots in the OF being ok

-Goldy and Arenado haven’t done anything but show up
-Yadi i have no reason to doubt will be solid at what he is expected to do and i dont care about the offense
-Williams looks to be the best of the other OF spots and that isn’t all that great
-DeJong looks exactly the same as he has the last year…and that is pretty inconsistent at best
-Carlson looks to be growing and we expect a lot but progress is what we should be expecting, not carrying the team or solving all it’s offensive issues

The team looks like another year of “accidental” offense, accidental HRs “accidental” hits, no consistency.

I applaud the Arenado deal to get us SOME more consistency, but alone that deal is hollow and does nothign to fix the problems. We knew the OF was bad and we did nothign to improve it other than HOPE.

A guy like David Peralta for RF, or maybe a guy like Marte from MIA would be great to add just a bit more surety.

Starling Marte is on an expiring contract right? Seems a decent target, he’s 32 and hits for good average, enough power and decent speed.

May not be long term would provide stability.

There has to be some kind of meeting to talk of a buyout at the least…i am sure he feels the heat and knows his teammates are holding back saying anything but undoubtedly thinking what he knows…he is not doing well and it is a detriment to the team

I know we are paying him regardless, but he is not Hechavarria or even Bader who can survive on an exceptional level of defense to mitigate their poor bats

Everyone keeps asking why can’t he put down some bunts, purposely hit to left field for singles…and every time they are lambasted for that not being something he is doing or trying to do or that they ar e trying to teach him or encourage him to do…they want the old Carp back

Well the old Carp isn’t coming back…at least not the power hitting one he turned himself into for a couple half years…

We are getting NOTHING out of him…if we are going to pay him to sit on the bench and rot…I’d at least prefer a guy who will drop down a bunt to beat the shift or a guy who can hit a lazy single to left…right now he can’t do anything offensively…

I want him to be serviceable…i really do…we could use the extra bench power..and some depth defensively…we are truly lacking a dependable 3rd impact bat as Dejong is not exactly tearing the cover off the ball…

I’d adjust the mentality now..and hope it leads to better things…bunts to beat the shift, and lazy left field singles with no power…have him ONLY do this the rest of Spring…even if they arent shifting…every AB in practice and games and pinch hitting…every single time…

let him succeed at SOMETHING…perhaps his confidence will grow and the other things will come..

what they have been doing the last 2 years is not working..period…change it entirely…fo the “dumb” thing for a while… he is a 20million dollar waste of space at this point….

Any other player would not even be talked about if they hit this bad…they’d have been released…sent to minors camp…that is the level of play he is performing at…it is sad…he has to feel it and he knows his teammates know it…

either drastically change something or release him and protect a guy or clear a place for a guy to be added that can help…if he goes somewhere else and figures it out while we pay him….good for him…but no one would complain about a sunk cost after his play this spring and last year…the money is gone…

If he doesn’t get a hit, how can they justify it? The talking points would be so hollow even for them. I guess they could come up with a phantom injury and hope he figures it out in the minors during rehab. I am sure he has a creaky neck or sore leg after we run him for an hour. I always felt that contract was given out too quick and for too long…i would be interested in seeing the stats on unfamiliar foreign pitchers (or those playing in a foreign country to success), that jump over and perform well in their first year only to fall off after that… I know it is not a 1 to 1 and there are outliers but Mikolas wouldn’t be the first pitcher to succeed immediately only to be adapted to in subsequent years…it happens for minor leaguers coming up too…and even in a game batting averages go up after each at bat right?

I am sorry, but we need to move on Porcello, Sanchez, Samradzja, Hamels, Godley, Cahill or just some veteran, I’d even kick the tires on Leake. Jack will play no matter whether he is as good as he can be, Waino will pitch until he is not effective…but after that what do we have? Kim was decent but hasnt showed the same so far, and his pen ability is still worth highlighting,Gant who hasnt been a starter in years, Ponce who has been in and out of the rotation to varying degrees of success, CMart who has been hurt, ineffective in the rotation to say the least, Alex Reyes hasnt started in years, Oviedo, Libertore, Woodford, Thompson, entirely unproven

If he now goes for TJ or something long, or even if he is just not good for another year) how is this not go down as a far worse contract handed out than Fowler or Carp or Cecil etc?

While the stats can easily be explained away. They also are extremely important.

If Edman hits 100 and Carp hits 400 you think they wouldn’t consider starting Carp?

If Thomas greatly outplays offensively Bader you dont think he gets a shot at CF?

You think CMart gets to be the number 5 if he gives up 6 every start?

If Thomas hits 225 and Bader 210. No that probably doesn’t matter who ends up on top.

If the outfielders who we were worried about their offense hit collectively 200. Then yeah you pay attention and start trying to find out what to do.

The stats DO matter. One game or at bat or situation may not. Should not.

But the stats are important. It is how we and they evaluate their play.

I try not to hang on the totals but if there is competition and question marks on performance to spot on the team absolutely how they are performing during ST as evaluated by stats are Abig part of those decisions

Santana was a minor league deal.

Are we that confident that we can’t afford a minor league deal to a guy who was legit before his injury last year. And can play multiple positions.

Porcelain can’t possibly be crazy expensive. With Odorizzi gone I’d prefer a veteran to solidify the rotation or at least force more competition.

Mikolas wasn’t exactly amazing before his big injury.

I like that we have so many options. But this isn’t a COVID shortened season with extra players allowed and short 7inninf double headers. I don’t see a lot to be optimistic about after this push back and the first week’s performances.

Odorizzi got 2 plus option. Can’t be enough to put them over luxury which means no more than 13. That type of deal seems pretty reasonable for a team without stability in the rotation.

We are still sitting at 39 right now and i dont think we have added Hudson to the 60day yet

As much as Santana would be worth a shot, there are a lot of guys out there still that are at least worth a minor league deal, and i can’t imagine they want to sit for the year

nevertheless, Odorizzi has a spot open for him right now….and his signing would make our rotation so much stronger…not to mention it would undoubtedly help the bullpen too

Maybe they are waiting on tonight with CMArt and Mikolas sim game/side session…not that one game is the end all be all, but if they look bad or arent healthy…it definitely puts us in a bind for a dependable rotation

Jack looked off…but there is no doubt he starts day 1
Waino looked like Waino…he’s in
Kim looked off…and he proved he can be valuable in the pen
Gant looked good but is he truly an option for the rotation? showed great value in the pen
Cmart?
Mik?

I’d prefer stability of Odorizzi and more pitching is never a bad thing…even a 3 yr deal would be ok as long as the per year wasnt stupid…no guarantee on Cmart back, or Kim, probably not Waino, can’t even be sure on Hudson. I’d prefer an Ace but Odorizzi is solid
