Hard to believe but here we are already. The final game of the season. That means next week I will have to start watching my old TV shows again. Cannon, Charlie’s Angels, The Invaders, Perry Mason, The Streets of San Francisco, Barnaby Jones, Mannix, and one or two others.

Going to be a long time before the next game thread. That makes me sad.

Agreed, Rats. I didn’t watch many games this year as the team wasn’t that interesting…but it is a bit sad every time that a season comes to an end. I miss the steady rhythm of having a game almost every day to look forward to. It’s a lot better when the season ends under the October lights and even better yet when it ends with celebration, but it’s still a long, cold winter waiting until pitchers and catchers report.

It will be a long winter without the list of delicacies at the Amish restaurant, and reports on the hot waitress and front row Amy.

I was thinking about the Monday news conference. It’s going to be aimed at getting the media and bloggers on board with whatever they are going to do. The nochos munching BFIB don’t sit there listening to news conferences. They may read about it, or more likely see a blurb on the local sports or catch part of a podcast, so it is the media and bloggers that need to be sold on it. We will have to have that in mind so we can see past the smoke and read between the lines. The softball tossing powder puff local media can’t be relied upon in a situation like this.

For those who care about the Wild Card race, here is the current status. The Mets and Braves may need to play a doubleheader on Monday. However, if Arizona loses today, the Mets and Braves are both in. However, the DH would still be needed to set the seeding.

The Woo article cut right to the heart of the matter.

Hopefully she stays on this and doesn’t let up.

A glimpse of the future today on the mound at the end of the line for 2024.

Sure the record is better this year but what really happened?

Winn was good, Goldschmidt, Arenado,Walker and Gorman regressed, and Edman stayed hurt and is now gone. Gray was pretty good but not great, Pallante took a step forward, the bullpen was solid.

For 2025, the starting rotation needs fixing – again. The outfield is a disaster both offensively and defensively. The bullpen should be fine or will it? 1b? The bench?

Man, that is some crazy stuff on NL Wild Card possibilities. Those big games that were rained out out, or “hurricaned out” in Atlanta really messed up those teams. Playing a double header right before the playoffs is certainly not ideal.

If ARI wins today, they could get eliminated w/89 wins. Better bring 90 wins in the NL.

The CiFs are sending the Cardinals off into the winter with our very best wishes and a final din-din of veal scallopini and Alsacian noodles, a mixed salad and a large slice of chocolate cake, accompanied by a glass or two of Medoc and our fervent hopes for 2025.

When expanding to 32 teams, I bet the end of year scheduling gets better. There are an uneven number of teams in each division and each league, so at least 1 team in the division has to play another divtand someone has to always have interleague play. The math just doesn’t work out well with odds.

I imagine they will go to 4 divisions in each league with 4 teams. With an even amount, you could then set it up so you always play your last 3 series of the year against division rivals. That at least ensures a more interesting September.

I was trying to do the math and I came up with 2 different scenarios for the game split with 32 teams. Interleague play is here to stay as a lot of fans like being able to see each team every year. One main thing to consider is weekly schedules as the league isn’t going to want off days in each week as that would lengthen the season length week wises. You are going to need some 4 game series, or multiple 2 game series which won’t be favored with players due to travel. I see proposal A as unlikely.

Proposal A – Emphasize Divison Games
    6 – 3 game series against 3 division teams
    1 – 3 game series against 12 league teams
    1 – 2 game series against 12 league teams
    1 – 3 game series against 16 interleague teams

    54 Division, 72 League, 48 Interleague

Proposal B – Set up 4 Game Series against Division Rivals
    2 – 4 game series against 3 division teams
    2 – 3 game series against 3 division teams
    2 – 3 game series against 12 league teams
    1 – 3 game series against 16 interleague teams

    42 Division, 72 League, 48 Interleague

Maybe someone better with the scheduling can come up with a slight mix where there is more division games and less league, but still worth 4 game series for a full week’s worth of games.

Proposal A should be 60 league games.

ATM, I like your Proposal A with more division games. It should also reduce travel time.

The only other tweak I can think of is if MLB would want to continue highlighting the interleage “rivalry” games. Those are usually home and home series.

CIF, I enjoy reading your din din lists. Always very elegant and classy. You are our resident Charles Emerson Winchester III, which is intended as a compliment.

If we just have to have interleague play then – to make sure everything is balanced – every team has to play every team the same number of games and really interleague divisions should play each other at about the same time during the season. I am not a fan of interleague play at all until the World Series.

I make quite an elegant grilled cheese, cut diagonally both ways to make 4 dainty little triangles. I guess dipping it in tomato soup is sort of provincial, though, but I’ve been partial to it since I was a little boy.

Just had a BLAT sandwich for lunch after a bike ride.

I think at least three of those guys in today’s lineup are playing their last game as Cardinals. Herrera would be better at DH than Carpenter, but Ollie is probably giving Carp the honor as he rides into the sunset after this game at least as a Cardinal.

If I’m mcgreevey looking at that D behind me, I’d be trying to get K’s rather than pitching to contact.

Solo home run to right for Donovan in the third.
