And in some genuinely important baseball news, Lake Mary, Florida’s little league team defeated the Chinese Taipei baseball team to win the Little League World Series. The team of scrappy 11 and 12 year old youngsters from Florida secured the Little League World Championship as Jason Alexander laid down a textbook perfect walk-off bunt to enable his team to win a tightly contested 2-1 victory. Now that’s really what the game of baseball is all about. Kids having fun playing the game…Way to go fellas!

    . . . . Little League World Championship as Jason Alexander laid down a textbook perfect walk-off bunt . . . .

I watched more live innings of baseball during this LL game than I have since the CWS in Omaha ended. Gotta say that walk-off bunt brought back nightmarish memories. Randy Choate, 2014 NCLS Game 3, fields a bunt and throws it into right field, allowing our guy Crawford to score from 2B in a walk-off. That did the Cardinals in as they could never recover to make it out of San Fran alive.

Of course Matheny using Wacha to give up the series walk-off to Ishikawa added insult to injury. A disturbing thought for sure, but I always thought if the Cards played better baseball that series, Taveras would still be with us.

And did you notice the little leaguers don’t even use the ghost runner in the 1st extra inning? They wait until the 2nd extra inning.

I’m far far from the goings on in St. Louis, consequently not in on the thinking of the brain trust, but it seems to me Pages has stepped up admirably (if unspectacularly) in times of need as our backup catcher, so why is it we have dipped down to AAA to fetch Herrera to fill the current need? Perhaps the answer is obvious, but as I say it seems curious here in the faraway Pyrenees.

It has been reported, I think by Katie Woo, that Herrera is here as Pages’s backup. I think I read something to the effect Marmol would deploy them with their handedness splits in mind. I admit I didn’t pay too much attention to the issue because, well, who cares? My understanding is that the next catcher of the future de jour is further down in the system.

Bling, I think you could find fault with Yadi and Pujols being prospects.

    CIF asked:

Contreras is injured so they needed a second catcher. Herrera was the best choice.

I would guess that Donovan is the emergency catcher?

Donovan is listed as emergency catcher. Baker has also had some catching experience in his past so I guess there are 2 emergency catchers.

I would love to see Baker in catcher’s gear.

You have to admit neither of them was a 5 tool prospect. 🙂

Tough to imagine the Cards overcoming this pitching match-up (and lineup). Stranger things have happened. I keep watching- hoping to find some glimmer of hope for the future (beyond Winn) and maybe if I’m honest, for the continued erosion of the poorly conceived roster.

Looks like it has to get worse before it gets better.

Cease is tough, but a righty so I’d give us a slight chance. Yet Mikolas is not so tough now unless he goes the road of Waino and focuses on pitch mix and movement.

BW: Further Herrera, I understand we need a backup to our backup, I was just puzzled why it was decided to start the backup’s backup right out of the triple=a box when the backup seemed to be playing pretty much OK.

Pages appeared to pull a hamstring and gimp about after legging out a infield play late Sunday? Just a guess.

Not if I was a runner rounding third base!

Over/Under on Cease K’s tonight is 11. Din-din for me tonight will be a thin crust pizza with double cheese, onion and sausage from Glass Nickel Pizza. Plus I’ll have fried mushrooms that will be drenched in Ranch dressing and to celebrate shedding 8 lbs off over the last month, I’ll obtain not 3, but 4 Popeye’s apple cinnamon pies.

    * I’m thinking of 2 Cards from yesteryear. One’s first name starts with an “E” and last name ends in an “O” and the other ones first name starts with a “J” and last name ends with an “R”.

That batting order is all messed up. I would shake things up a little and go this way using those guys

    Scott
    Winn
    Burleson
    Baker
    Donovan
    Herrera
    Nootbaar
    Goldschmidt

Another combo would be Ernie Broglio and John Stuper.

Someone mentioned the possibility of Baker behind HP. Why not? He’s put together like Salvador Perez and Perez has collected a GG or two. Incidentally, BR has Perez listed at only 6-3 255 lbs. I’d say that’s about as accurate as saying Twiggy’s put together like Dolly Parton.

Haha! Yeah, I wonder how many possibilities exist, Bikemike?
