I’m all for legitimate criticism. But what exactly was Jordan Montgomery going to do for the Cardinals in the second half? And The MVP of the Texas league isn’t pocket change. Neither is Techoah Roby. And your chances of getting Monty back are the same.

I think whether or not Yadi ends up in St Louis doesn’t change the fact that Oli will have a real short leash next year if things go bad early. Shorter than it probably already is.
I agree with you Bob. I’m not in favor of bringing him in as manager. I’m just in favor of bringing him in period. Maybe he is manager material, maybe he isn’t. But I wouldn’t not bring him in, in some role, because I’m worried about ruffling Olis feathers. And as far as keeping fading stars around, that’s just playing the long game. There’s a whole bigger group of fans than you and I that want to see these guys play no matter what.
Who here thinks Oli is going to metamorphise into this great manager and leader? Oli complies to the front offices wishes without making waves. It’s a legitimate opinion that Yadi might not be managerial material. But if he is? What a huge boost for the whole organization. At the very least, we need a new wave of real baseball guys around the team. They are the guys who made the Cardinals legendary. Not Mo and Oli. As I say that, I give BDW some respect for taking care of the Wainos and Yadis. He took plenty of criticism for it. At the end of the day, maybe there’s a part of the game that’s more than wins and losses, and Bill sees the value in that.I wouldn’t worry about making Oli nervous.
When I say you get Gray and Yammomoto for that money, I mean the 200. You need to spend beyond that for the rest of the players.
If they’re going to buy their way out of this and truly compete for next year, that’s short. I’m for signing Yammomoto. I see that as a long term investment. Even if it means lesser for the other additions. He will be part of the current young group and future of the team. If you want to truly compete this year, you are looking at 210-220 for 2024. You might get Gray and Yammomoto for that money. But that leaves you a starter and 2 bullpen pieces short. Either that or you trade from your young core for the 3rd pitcher.

Or he could go the Whitey Herzog route as manager and general manager. Now that would be a housecleaning.
It just is. The Cardinals didn’t do anything wrong. The Rangers didn’t do anything magic to develope Garcia. Many times it takes awhile for foreign players to adjust to living in a strange country and the already difficult task of Pro ball. Hindsight is easy.

Hader had a qualifying offer but since SD went over the luxury tax, it’s a 4th rounder.We aren’t fine Bling. Our middle innings relief should be much better if we get decent starting pitching. But we need one or two back end guys. I don’t trust anybody but Helsley and I don’t trust his health. If you don’t want his arm to fall off you can only pitch him every other day for ONE inning. Everything else could wind up fine and the bullpen bite us. This is where Mo has to be smart. It’s doable if they are clever with their other moves. You have to leave some pieces to trade for these guys. A Burleson or a Knizner type or some combination should bring a decent back end guy from one of the lower spenders looking to fill out their rosters with cheaper talent.
I’m focused on what needs to happen to right the ship for 2024 and, more importantly, beyond. Hindsight is great for judging trades and signings. But it’s useless for moving forward. So far a lot of different scenarios have been thrown out. I like those that don’t involve us giving up draft picks. If you want to spend big, sign Yosh Yammomoto. Young with all the perephials. If the cost is comparable to Snell or Nola, that’s the way I go. Can you afford Montgomery? Pitcher #2. Than trade for a 3ish kind of guy that doesn’t require Noot Donovan Gorman Walker or Winn in return. If Bill shops off of the bargain isle and we have a similar failure to 2023, the risk of losing more of his fan base and revenue is much greater. Following thru with the public statement they made of bringing in 3 outside starting pitchers should energize the fan base as long as they aren’t skeptical of the level of commitment. In this scenario, Mo just needs to figure out the trade for that 3rd guy. Than we keep our young core, and can focus on developing our pitching thru our system. To me that’s the real end game. I want 1) Those 2 high draft picks in the 2024 draft 2) I want to keep our young core. Bills going to have to go way beyond his comfort level for at least 2024 in team payroll if he wants to compete for a championship. That will be the tell whether he’s sincere or just giving lip service to sell tickets.
Yep Dom that old Minny stadium was the worst. I called it the trash bag bowl. I’m going by memory but didn’t Ken Daley give up a grand slam to lose game 6 up there against lefty Kent Hrbek? And I think it was the first hr he gave to a lefty that year. Nightmares
I agree Freddy’s best hitter in the league and Dodgers have plenty of thump. Maybe Cardinals not dumb with Goldy hitting 2nd? We know Oily isn’t writing the lineup card.

That’s the bottom line Bling. I try not to spew on and on about my own opinions. I try to deal in what realistically is going to happen. What they should do, IMHO, is bite the bullet. Be honest with the fans. It’s a different game now. We can’t spend with the East coast West coast. It’s going to take more than 1 year to start churning out major league quality pitching from our system. Once we do that, THAN we spend on two or three veterans like Goldy, Arenado, Contreras. But we put the cart before the horse, or maybe the fact is Mo traded the wrong pitchers and here we are. It doesn’t help to harp on that fact. But that’s not what they are going to do. Even if they successfully buy their way back to being a playoff contender, you have the same problem in another 4,5 years.

It’s not The Sporting News we are reading anymore. We have to evaluate the source of what we read these days. And even “reliable” sources are unreliable if they are being used to spread false information that helps their sources agenda. Very little of it is fact. I need to remind myself of this as well.
