Well, with the arrivals of Lynn and Gibson, one thing is perfectly clear. Steve Matz is now the ace of the rotation.

Another thing is that by not spending big money for free agent pitchers, they should have plenty of cash available to extend Goldschmidt after the 2024 season. Personally, I’d like to see Goldy retire wearing a Cardinal uniform.

I think Goldy is all but guaranteed to be traded at the deadline, unless they do something drastic to improve the roster.

I would have rolled the dice with Hudson and Woodford before Lynn and Gibson. At least they are young with potential. Lynn and Gibson are looking in the mirror at their best years. But the brass thinks these two geezers can combine for 350 innings, while Dak and Jake were not going to be able to do that.

I would not be surprised to see one of the old guys go down with an injury and miss a good part of the season.

You mention McGreevy, Graceffo, and Hence. But you forgot to mention Roby, Kloffenstein, Robberse, Rom, Hjerpe, Bedell,
    Hansen, Rajcic, etc.

Short term contracts for Lynn and Gibson allow the Cards to track the progress of the younger guys and slot the performers into the rotation over the next several years.

It could just as easily be worry about falling revenues when Bally Sports implodes.

When Bally’s does implode, DeWitt and his investors can buy the remaining % for 30 cents on the dollar.

I think Mo pivoted hard when he heard the numbers being thrown around in the FA market. He locked up some cheap innings depth, replacing the innings he offed at the deadline, so the acute need is filled and the pressure is off. Now he can work the trade market from a position where he is not desperate.

I don’t think he pivoted after hearing numbers, he pivoted several weeks ago when he said payroll would be in line with last year’s projection and they needed starting pitchers to absorb innings.

“IP depth” is what he said.

Mikolas and the new pair are all vulnerable vs lefty bats.

Now trade for a young guy who had a rough 2023 but who has ace potential. Like Alek Manoah.

Good grief. If these two guys ARE 2 of the 3 pitchers Mo said he’d sign then just go ahead and write next year off. If this is the staff you are going to assemble – add two 36 year old has beens? Just go ahead and trade both Goldschmidt and Arenado…. If I was Goldschmidt & Arenado and THIS is the plan I would be demanding to be traded.

Except if they are traded at the deadline, they are going to contenders…

I suggest everyone listen to today’s press conference. I think Blingboy’s assessment is not far off the mark. I thought it was interesting that Mo made a comment about adding two players that add a positive veteran presence in the clubhouse.

More to come as he stated several times that the work is not done.

Mo is a perfect example of a person who has gotten too comfortable, too arrogant, and too complacent in their job and has been allowed to remain in place well past their expiration date.

I don’t think the Cardinals front office is capable of thinking outside the box.

But they could sign Ryu and Lugo for roughly $25 million per year. Have Lugo be the opener and throw 5 innings per game, have Ryu come in and throw four innings per game. Combined, you have an ace that gives the bullpen one day off per week and absorbs 280 innings per year. You also have insurance if another starter goes down. You also have trade assets for the trade deadline.

I’ll have to listen to Johnny’s comments during the presser at a later time. Right now it’s too close to supper time.

Not too excited for the moves of the past two days…I feel like one $23M pitcher would be much better than these two. Heck, like BikeMike I may have gone with Hudson and Woody for $6M over these two straight up, let alone +$17M.

Where did that come from, please, Bob Reed? I must have missed something important. Thanks.

He’s lumping quotes or alleged quotes together but I do think this move signals that a trade for a starter might be coming. They put enough out there and they could snipe younger 2-3 starter with a couple years of cost control. Which is what we all know they really want.

With Lynn, Gibson and Mikolas you better make sure your defense is spot on in the infield. It almost has to be Winn and Edman up the middle. Which puts Gorman at DH almost exclusively. Which I think will help some of his back ailments. Outfield gets a little murkier though.

Bowtie likes to get his shopping done by Christmas. He might be done by Cyber Monday at this rate. Lol

Not to fret gang. Mo is just getting warmed up in the acquisition department. He’s like a batter in the on-deck circle……taking a couple practice swings and licking his chops as to what he’ll soon be delivering to his fans. By the time the calendar strikes 2024, all of this disappointment, fear and anger, will all seem nothing more than a terrible nightmare. Mo will deliver the goods.

Gibson’s career comp thru age 35 is Jake Westbrook.

I say snarky thinks about this guy from time to time. But he has this right. Thats why he wrote the Colomb. To remind us he predicted it and got it right. (See-snark)

Well Mo has come on the record to say the Cardinals arent done yet. Will have to wait and see what that means.

It needs to mean that he’s still planning to sign / trade for 2 more starting pitchers that are significantly better than any of the ones currently on the roster.

Maybe that is the plan because right now the 4 they have under contract are the bottom of the barrel.

I don’t have a problem with one of Gibson or Lynn….Gibson looks to be the better of the 2 off last year, so Lynn getting $10 mill could be overkill.

I think the other thing Mikolas is valued higher by the Front office than the fans and most, he definitely needs to repeat his 2022 season for this to workout.

My other thought if you sign 2 innings eaters (Lynn/Gibson) does that mean you can take a chance on Snell as the Ace.

I guess the silver lining is these are short term deals and if it does not work this year I can’t see any way this front office or Manager return for 2025 and the new regime will not be saddled with a bunch of bad contracts.
