Nola is out of the barn now. We need to set our sights on Snell.

That’s about $24.5M for each of those 7 years on average. He turns 31 years old on June 4, so he will collect that final $24.5M at the age of 38.

You can’t blame the player. The owners are the ‘free market’, and they are choosing to pay that amount of money. It’s too bad that money isn’t being spread around a bit instead of being lavished on one very good piplayer who has no HOF credentials and never will, IMO.

Smell is 31 years old also. So, Nola’s contract is definitely Snell’s floor. I can’t imagine the Cardinals giving Snell 7/30M, but, all things considered, I have to think that Snell now feels that he is owed that much money.

On another note, I don’t want to give up that draft pick for signing Gray. Hopefully, they can sign Yamamoto and trade for one or more of Bieber, Glasgow, Manoah, etc.

Nola gone for pretty crazy deal both in years and in money -7 / 172.

Johnny Mo probably just crapped his pants, lol because he just realized he’s not getting even a good pitcher in FA without blowing his entire budget.

Now it’s down to trades – Can he even trade for 2 really good starters and 2-3 bullpen arms? Maybe still get the BP guys from the FA market and have to trade tor all the starters?

He might HAVE to trade Goldschmidt and another player he’d rather not or get shutout this offseason.

$100 bucks says he’s already thinking about begging Hudson to come back….

Phillies have their SP1 & SP2 in place and their rotation looks contender worthy.

BillMo’s alligator arms won’t reach up there.

They never do. Did some need another year of evidence to be convinced? Pay attention to what they do. The talk is just marketing.

I hope with all my might that we don’t give big money to Snell. He just happened to win the Cy Young in his walk year, which is perfect timing for him, but he is fool’s gold. Someone is going to pay him a ton of money to sit on the IL. He has only achieved 130 innings twice in his career. He is fragile. Please don’t do it Mo.

Nola’s AAV is not out of the Cardinals budget at all. It is no more than Arenado and Goldy get. It is the 7 years that they would balk at.

FYI, this is Snell’s second Cy Young award. That’s pretty impressive. Also, I’d rather give this 7yr/$172M deal to a guy that just won a Cy Young than a guy that just had a 4.46 ERA.

I think Snell is going to get a 6yr/$174M deal though. Also, I’d put Montgomery at 6yr/$141M and Yamamoto at 8yr/$212M, based on this Nola deal and the industry projections.

Nola’s AAV is not out of the Cardinals budget at all.

If the Cardinals are trying to stay around last year’s budget, and need three starting pitchers and at least two relief pitchers, it likely is.

Mo won’t give Snell 6 years. Or Montgomery. But Yamamoto is 5 years younger than those guys. That is the one he might make a big play for. You are getting the meat of his career not the down slope after the hump. Pay for what he will do not for what he has done.

1td – Oh, that’s right. MLB starts two months and about a week before June 4. You got me on that one.

Saw this on MLBTR: “Though Goold notes that other NL clubs were “actively engaged” in attempting to lure Nola away from Philadelphia, he adds that the Cardinals were not among them, despite indications earlier in the offseason that the club would be interested in Nola’s services this winter. ”

If Goold knew ‘The Cardinals are not actively engaged in attempting to lure Nola’, it would have been nice to mention it before he signed with somebody else. Its amazing how much inside info people somehow had, only to be mentioned after the fact.

    LA,

The Cardinals should have at least $50M to spend. They can afford one $25M starter, one $20M starter, then a cheap $5M depth piece. They also will be subtracting some more salary through trades.

I don’t see the need to spend big on the bullpen. Those guys are a complete crapshoot anyway.

    Pads,

Snell is a huge gamble. He has amassed 130 innings only twice in seven seasons. I would be very uncomfortable offering him a Nola type contract only to see him sit on the bench.

Nola was a much safer bet. He is a workhorse who has rarely, if ever, been on the IL.

Mo needs to get someone who can give us a lot of quality innings, not sit on the IL.

mud, it’s minor details but if Nola turns 31 in the first year of the deal, he will turn 37 in the 7th year of the deal. He will actually be 36 for the first 2 months of the final year of the deal.

FWIW, Mozeliak said on KMOX that he had several conversations with Nola’s agent. My guess is that he choked when told the asking price and years.

It wouldn’t have made sense for the Cardinals.

I think the deal for nola was far more than anyone else would pay. I think the Phillies paid him largely for the good he’s already done them. Anybody else wouldn’t do that cause he hasnt done anything for them. Personally I’m not big on snell because of health. That’s the only thing. Gray would be great and the Japanese guy would be great but I think he will get more from someone else than the Cardinals will be willing to go.

It’s looking doubtful they overpay for any of these guys. I’m not sure I care. Yamamoto is the only one that seems worth the risk to me. Even with him, there’s no major league history. He’s young and dominates in Japan. I will wait until the off-season unfolds before I get sparky about the whole thing.

This is a tweet from Goold:

    Derrick Goold

    @dgoold

#stlcards never got to the point of making an offer to Aaron Nola or meeting with pitcher; they were not a team that actively engaged in trying to lure him away from returning to Phillies, like other NL club(s), according to source.

    So, that is discouraging.

Not discouraging at all. He wanted 7 years and wanted to stay in Philly. Why waste time.

Nola has been below-average in two of the last three years. The starter you are talking about is a fairy tale.

Snell, Gray, Rodriguez: lack of durability
    Yamamoto, Imanaga: no MLB experience
    Nola: Average in past
Montgomery: not elite enough (although this is the guy I want)
