it’s hard to see us wading into the deep end on years or overall $$.

Its just not going to happen. As to any of the top shelf FA starters, if somebody offers 8 years, BillMo won’t touch that. If the Mets, or somebody offers $40M AAV, nope. What are the chances that is exactly what will happen? Pretty good I think. Nola, Monty, guys like that are as good as off the table. If Mo is determined to feature a true #1 Ace atop the lineup, it will have to be via trade, taking on a lesser financial obligation in exchange for core talent that we have no replacement for.

I see Nola in the 6yr/$180M range, maybe more. I doubt the Cardinals will do that.

I could see the Cards in on Sonny Gray though. I am guessing he will fetch close to 5yr/100M, especially if he wins the CYA this year. The issue with him is that he is about to be 34.

“Lars Nootbaar and Nolan Arenado are in Japan to watch Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s playoff start in what could be some elite recruiting tactics”

“Yamamoto has a strong interest in pitching for a big-market MLB team, sources told The Athletic’s Will Sammon.”

There’s those “sources” again. In other news——

“Every free agent has high interest in playing for the team that will offer him the most money for the least amount of work, aka the shortest contract period,” sources tell The Cardinal Nation’s Brian Walton. 😉

I could see Yamamoto going to the Mets.

You could work for The Athletic Brian.

I could see Yamamoto going to the Mets.

The Athletic author also reported this:

One thing that arguably undercuts the connection to the Mets is that the club is giving hints they won’t be as aggressive this offseason.

The Mets currently have a rotation of:

    Senga
    Quintana
    ??
    ??
    ??

They might not end up with a $330M payroll like last year but they need some pitching so I expect them to do some spending.

I would probably take Yammomoto as my #1 target. All his Japanese numbers are outstanding and he’s only 25. Plus he doesn’t require a draft pick sent back. But if we weren’t in such dire need of starting pitching, would I really be that exited to sign a guy with zero major league experience to a contract likely to be the third or fourth largest for a pitcher in major league history? Mo is going to have to take risks to get this thing fixed. Is this one worth it?

IIRC, Oh was Korean but came from the Japanese League and the Cardinals had been scouting him for many years. His numbers, ERA, WHP, in Asia were comperable to the Asian league guys we are supposed to like this winter. All good, but he didn’t last in MLB. His arm broke down I think. We weren’t on the hook for big money or a long contract at least. You never know what will happen once the ink is dry. If Mo drops the biggest part of his disposable payroll on one guy, then we need to consider what happens if it goes wrong, and for how long are we going to be dragging an anchor.

There are many options and scenarios out there but I wouldn’t mind our three acquisitions for the rotation being Yamamoto, Montgomery, and Bieber. The two free agents wouldn’t cause us to lose a draft pick and I don’t think we would have to give up too much for Bieber since he only has one year of control and is coming off of a down year.

I don’t think both Yammomoto and Montgomery is realistic, as I think both will be in the group of top contracts, especially Monty. Sonny Gray will be into his age 34 season, so that will moderate his contract. Or somebody like that, maybe in addition to Yammomoto possibly if BDW has lost his mind and hands Mo that kind of money. That would be best case, too good to be true. Probably a guy like Gray and a lesser but still good younger guy closer to 30 than 35 is more what I expect. A top guy in his prime like Monty is just going to be priced out of our grasp considering we need multiple guys. I think Mo will make a very strong run at Matsui the reliever also, since our pen, like our rotation, is a basket case with no help in Memphis.

Yes Gray will be more in our price range but he will cost us a draft pick which I don’t like.

BDW will probably like it better. And the sad part is, Gray will be gone fishin when whoever we could have drafted might be getting to the show with 6 years of control.

“Right-handed pitcher Naoyuki Uwasawa of the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters announced today his plans to move to Major League Baseball for the 2024 season via the posting process,” MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reported Saturday.

Uwasawa posted a 2.96 ERA with a 124-to-41 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 1.14 WHIP in 170 innings across 24 starts this season. The 29-year-old has a career 3.19 ERA over nine seasons and appears to be one of the more consistent pitchers in the Nippon Professional Baseball League. “

This makes no sense to me. Montgomery and Gray are very likely to get the same AAV on the FA market. A 6yr/$120M contract to Montgomery or a 3yr/$60M deal to Gray doesn’t really make a difference.

I think he means that the Cards have never given out that big of a contract to a starter on the market. I agree that I’d take the deal on Monty before Gray, but the front office may like the shorter commitment. Sadly.

Correct, I was referring to the overall contract even if the AAV is similar. I would much prefer Monty over Gray but Monty’s bidding might be more intense. We shall see.

If you want to sign a player with a QO, sign Blake Snell. Sandiego is over the spending threshold and is not eligible for a competitive balance pick. They would get a pick, but I believe it’s after the 4th round. I just don’t really want to give one of our first 2 picks for any of these guys. These aren’t waters this team is going to be wading in for long. We have to figure out a system to supply our major league staff with quality pitching without spending the crazy money. Sign Yammomoto and be done with it.

In order to sign Yamamoto, we would have to outbid Cohen and the Mets. Cohen’s claim to fame Is that he found a way to accumulate vast sums of money. He knows nothing about what it takes to build a winning baseball team as shown by his $300M+ payroll and dismal failure as Owner. That said, the Cardinals are in the running until they’re not.

The ace in the hole is Nootbaar. His teammates loved him during the WBC.
He’s lobbying hard in that market.
