No kidding, GG. I’ve seen more hits on a Shaun Cassidy album than what our boys have accrued these past 2 games. How does an entire team put up a grand total of 2 hits……with Victor Scott accounting for both of them? And boy did Tink get his bell rung on the hill today. If he keeps that up, Rat will come up with one of his silly nicknames for him…….Tinker Bell possibly? What’s for din-din tonight one may ask? I’ve been averaging 4-5 din-dins a week over at a local restaurant named “Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse”. I’ll be venturing over there shortly, with a trip over to the drive-thru lane at Popeye’s afterwards to snag 3 apple cinnamon pies.

    A Shaun Cassidy reference? Hahahahaha

Da do run run run da do run run. Pffffft.

76.5 is the over / under on wins?

I’ll take the over. 83 last year and the team should at least be .500.

So far we have seen all the SP other than Gray at least in game action. It sounds like Gray is throwing, but any word on when he may play? I like seeing the pitchers take the mound in game action in Spring to know they aren’t nursing an injury.

Having paid close attention to Spring Training, here are some good assumptions to make about the 2025 team based on what I’ve seen so far:

NOTHING – Making any assumption after the first week of Spring training is like having your kindergartner predict how much you’ll owe in on taxes next year.

That said, there are some things to highlight:

Wilson Contreras has picked up right where he left off mashing baseballs. In 9 at bats he has 5 hits with 2 of those for extra bases.

Koperniak has taken some really impressive at bats. He hasn’t been real great in the field though in particular with his arm.

I’m really intrigued by Barrero. Power, speed, defense. He does it all. He might be a really good find.

Gorman has struck out 7 times in 12 at bats. But he’s at least hitting some doubles and home runs, right? That’s a negative. O-for-12.

Victor Scott has 5 hits in 9 at bats including a triple and home run plus 3 walks. And we need a leadoff hitter. And we need a CFer who can hit. Make no assumptions yet, but this is a great start.

Several pitchers have looked good – Roby, Graceffo, Liberatore, Munoz, Romero, Fernandez, O’Brien, and Mathews. Super small sample sizes here. Conversely, only Pallante and Bailey Horn have looked pretty ugly. Hopefully Pallante finds his release point again.

Yeah, it’s way too early to foretell who will be crowned as the mighty Grapefruit League Champions of 2025. We’ll have a better idea as the mid-March deadline approaches…Meanwhile, I’m predicting a dead heat that will go down to the wire over in the Cactus League…

Is Victor Scott trying to win an outfield spot?

If he can get on base he’d be quite the lead off man.

Cardinal bats appear underwhelming so far this spring. Fortunately, none of this counts for anything. Presume we are still in reset mode.

We listened to a few innings today. It was good to have a Cardinal broadcast on again.

Underwhelming is an understatement 29 total hits in the last 6 spring training games….(11 of those came in 1 game against the Marlins)

Yeah, given the starting rotation we have, we’re gonna need some serious offense to win games. Other than Winn, I haven’t seen that much consistency from our home grown crop of guys moving up through the organization.

Heard anything about Yadi? I was hoping he would find us a few gems in DR.

Giving young players a chance doesn’t mean they will be any good. Also, is there any indication that Gorman and Walker might be more effective this season?

A few interesting roster transactions in the last few days. I’m surprised Mathews was already sent to minor league camp. I thought they would let him stick around for most of the spring. He does need a couple of months of AAA time though.

Bailey Horn getting sent down already tells me he is the 1st 40 man cut if they need a spot. Zach Thompson also is our 3-4 weeks with a lat injury. He will start the year on the IL and likely be optioned when he is back. I think his time with STL is getting close to being over.

Neither have played well, but there is the obvious caveat Spring Training and especially the 1st week or 2 of ST performance is meaningless. I haven’t been able to catch game action though to see if they quality at bats or are clearly working on things against live pitching.

I may be in the minority, but I am fine with Mathews going down. Further, I hope they do the same with Wetherholt soon. The spring hype can quickly get out of control. Let them earn their spots, which will occur over time.

I agree Wetherholt needs to go down. I’m honestly surprised they have kept him up still since he likely will start in A+. Let whomever the team thinks is the actual SS backup start every other day when Winn doesn’t start.

Exactly. I want to see more of Jose Barrero, for example. Let JJ get his ABs in minors camp.

I concur. Sending Mathews down now ensures there isn’t unreasonable push to start him in the St Louis rotation by the fan base. They should definitely do the same with Wetherholt but given his distance to St Louis (only 1 year of Low A), he should be a safer bet on everyone being ok to let his minor league time continue. Nearly everyone will accept that JJ needs more seasoning.

This is exactly what I was thinking when I saw it. Since they’re punting on the next year or two anyway, it makes sense to keep him in Memphis as long as possible to get the cheap payoff on the other end.

We have 37 runs in 9 games which happens to to be the 2nd worst runs/game ratio in baseball. Not great. And that’s with moving the fences in.

On the other side of the coin, the team has allowed 46 runs which is about average. And when you consider that half of those (23) were given up in just 4 innings, that’s not bad at all.

    Horn – game 1 – 4 in 1/3 inning
    Robberse – game 2 – 9 in 2/3 inning
    Hence – game 5 – 6 in 1/3 inning
Pallante – game 6 – 4 before getting an out in his 2nd inning of work.

Horn has already been sent down. Robberse and Hence are very likely to join him before the end of Spring.

37 runs, ehh? Well, runs are still important in baseball. Pitching too. How’re we looking on that end?
