After the Astros traded Kyle Tucker, I can understand. He cannot carry the Astros
Do you think he can carry Seattle? I think Houston still has a better chance of winning the AL West than Seattle does. As you mentioned this is about desperation.

No, I don’t think he can carry Seattle. I don’t think his offense plays there. Seattle needs at least two bats, but they haven’t really lost anything yet, and they won 88 games last year.
I look at it as though Houston has taken a step back offensively. Maybe the loss of Bregman & Tucker is largely offset by the gains of Paredes & Walker, but the lineup does not seem as potent.
At some point this winter though, Trader Jerry is going to strike…
January 9, 2025 at 3:57 pm #274592And remember, if Arenado had accepted the trade, Christian Walker would not be the Astros 1B.
No way Arenado + Paredes = Tucker + Bregman
January 9, 2025 at 4:58 pm #274595I see Johnny claimed a LHP’er off of waivers named Bailey Horn. I looked him up and the best I can tell is that Bailey issues quite a few BB’s prior to serving up the taters…Bailey ought to sell a few tickets. For the opposition.
January 9, 2025 at 5:03 pm #274596LOL – MLBTR questioning why the Cardinals aren’t moving players like Fedde, Helsley & Matz
January 9, 2025 at 5:53 pm #274597I wonder if DeWitt is questioning the succession plan yet.
Mozeliak is making the Cardinals a laughing stock.
January 9, 2025 at 6:36 pm #274600Mo is not making the Cardinals a laughing stock. Grow up!
January 9, 2025 at 6:41 pm #274601GameCard, I liked you better when you were pouting they traded away Tommy Edman.

jj-cf-stlParticipantFedde at bat
Matz on deck
Arenado in the holeIt costs Bill 18mil to keep Nado until the deadline. He can bundle the first two now and wash away 20mil. Everybody wants Matz gone, and in a Fedde bundle, I don’t think the pair being gone would affect stadium revenue at all. Same with Nado. As options go, shuffling deck chairs is well established. Poor Bill can cover Nado until he gets lucky. It waters down Fedde’s return tho.
January 9, 2025 at 7:15 pm #274603Johnny’s got Bailey Horn lined up and ready to replace Matz in the ’25 rotation…
January 9, 2025 at 7:24 pm #274604Keep Arenado and win.
January 9, 2025 at 7:35 pm #274606Nolan has to be amped up now that Johnny’s added Horn Bailey to the mix.
January 9, 2025 at 7:36 pm #274607Horn Bailey’s almost as good of a baseball name as is Manny Motter!
January 10, 2025 at 9:32 am #274623Mo’s song, lol
“Day after day I’m more confused
Yet I look for the light through the pourin’ rain
You know that’s a game that I hate to lose
And I’m feelin’ the strain, ain’t it a shame?
Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock ‘n’ roll and drift away

Yes I understand that. Subtract Walker and add Arenado and Houston is still better than Seattle IMO. I think Arenado just miscalculated his value. He thought he could sit back and choose from several different teams. Now he realizes that there is only miniscule interest in him and that if he doesn’t change his tune he is going to be stuck in STL on a team with almost no chance at the postseason.
January 10, 2025 at 3:19 pm #274641And stuck on a team that doesn’t like him and doesn’t want him.
Arenado has definitely diminished his HOF chances with his actions.
January 10, 2025 at 4:11 pm #274644Keep Arenado and win.
Win what? 4th place instead of 5th place?

Depends on where he ends up. The right team could help his chances. Doubt the Red Sox or the Cardinals are among the ones, though.
January 10, 2025 at 5:44 pm #274648He’ll have no problem. Paris or Taylor could probably sneak in these days.
January 10, 2025 at 9:39 pm #274654If you guys haven’t listened to today’s episode of Cardinals Territory, I highly encourage it.
Bernie & Katie talked about the foolish ways of the Cardinals not reaching agreements with their “young core”, compared Cardinals financial outlays and performance to the Guardians & Rays (about the 16:00 mark) and the Brewers (around the 19:20 mark) and capped it off by talking about how the Cardinals can’t seem to stick to a plan this offseason and are caught in the “Mozeliak Middle.” I bet Bernie has read, “From Good to Great,” too bad nobody in the front office has.
January 10, 2025 at 9:41 pm #274655Keep Arenado and win.
They haven’t won any postseason games with Arenado. And they’ve missed the playoffs the last two years.
January 11, 2025 at 9:00 am #274671When the St. Louis Cardinals acquired Nolan Arenado, there were six years remaining on his deal. The Cardinals extracted $51 million from the Rockies for a player who had not yet begun his decline.
Now that Arenado has begun his decline, shouldn’t the Cardinals be expecting to give up more than $25.5 million over his final three years?
Their own trade for Arenado is the precedent.
January 11, 2025 at 9:09 am #274672Bernie & Katie talked about the foolish ways of the Cardinals not reaching agreements with their “young core”
I’ll have to listen to the discussion soon, but this is something I have been thinking about as well. Looking at Mo and probably the edict from Dewitt, the Cards have been the most risk averse team in pro sports. Their is obviously some risk handing out deals for young players, but the rewards can great if it works out and help build a core team. Even when it doesn’t work out like Evan White’s deal with Seattle, the total money is a drop in the bucket compared to the money we hand out to “established vets” like Mikolas. There is no reason this team shouldn’t be doing whatever it takes to lock up Winn this Spring Training. Donovan could also be retained as he is a valuable player and should provide value even after his arb years are up.
I also think Mo wants to come away the clear winner from every deal that isn’t a get rid of this player type deal. I have read about Mo in some chats with people in the industry that he has unrealistic expectations on deals and won’t budge at all. This again probably comes down to being too risk averse and not taking any chances at all. If you don’t take risks, then you are destined for mediocrity.
January 11, 2025 at 10:35 am #274675You have to develop players good enough to warrant taking the risk for a long term contract. The last two guys I recall they gave early deals to in order to buy out their arbitration years and into free agency were Paul DeJong and Kolten Wong. They turned out to be role players not franchise cornerstones.
I suspect Donovan is also in that category, but maybe Winn could be more. Then again, remember how excited you were when DeJong hit 25 home runs in 108 games as a rookie?
This time last year, some folks were suggesting that Walker should be locked down long term…
P.S. The Cards did it partway with Edman, paying for two of his arb years at once. But when the Dodgers got him, they not only bought out his final arb year, but paid for four more free agent years. The Cardinals likely didn’t have the appetite for such a commitment.

The Cardinals should be emulating the Guardians, Rays, and Brewers? Hmmm……That idea sounds familiar.
I agree the offseason has been weird and disjointed. Mo can’t decide what he wants to do.
Reset? Rebuild? Contend? Both? Neither?By the way, I very much enjoyed the book Good To Great.
