Pork TwainParticipant
What exactly was said today, that leads you to believe that?
Pork TwainParticipantA lot of things are said in press conferences that do not sum up the entirety of a situation. If he did all of the things I mentioned…perfectly, it would have been a lot more difficult to move on from him for purely philosophical differences.
Pork TwainParticipantI am more than ok with this move. This was lead to by leaving starters in too long, overusing questionable relievers and poor lineups. No reason to waste Waino and Yadi’s last hoorah on another year of this.
Pork TwainParticipantI would like to keep Waino, but I am more than happy to see Yadi walk, IF the alternative is a disruptive Yadi on the bench at some point and/or blocking a top prospect from seeing the field. I am more than tired of seeing that last part play out.
Where did Yadi rank last season, among catchers (I know one of you have this info tucked away)? Is signing him to two years really worth having X level of production behind the plate vs what we could scratch together to replace him for one year?
Pork TwainParticipantThis just solidifies my belief that we will all see what we want to see.
When I looked at the list of large market cities with MLB teams, LA, NY, Chicago, SF and Boston, I noted that three of them were able to support two MLB teams and numerous other pro teams. One MLB team, the alpha, dwarfed the Cards in revenue and spending and the other team was right there with the Cards. IMHO, that speaks volumes to the impact the market size has on the teams within that market.
NY: Yankees/Mets (MLB), Knicks/Nets (NBA), Giants/Jets (NFL), and Rangers/Islanders/Devils (NHL)
LA: Dodgers/Angels (MLB), Lakers/Clippers (NBA), Rams/Chargers (NFL), Kings/Ducks (NHL)
Chicago: Cubs/White Sox (MLB), Bulls (NBA), Bears (NFL), Blackhawks (NHL)
San Fran/Oakland: Giants/A’s (MLB), Warriors (NBA), 49ers (NFL), Sharks (NHL)
Boston: Red Sox (MLB), Celtics (NBA), Patriots (NFL), Bruins (NHL)
St Louis: Cards (MLB), Blues (NHL)Pork TwainParticipantNo one is saying that the Cards are poor, should not spend and should not have a top 10 payroll. They are not, they do and they do. They are 8th in revenue, are in the 8th largest market, and have the 6th highest payroll. Many would say they are doing more than required; obviously not the most outspoken Cardinal fans. Those saying they do too little, enjoy the idea of spending the money of others, with no risk to their own pocketbook.
Large, medium and small markets are not evenly divided into groups of 10. There 5-7 Large market, 9-14 small and everyone else scattered between.
As far as comparing the Cards to the Dodgers:
The Yankees (Large)
$2,304,000,000 Market Size (1)
$683,000,000 Revenue (1)
$223,019,037 Payroll (2)The Dodgers (Large)

$1,364,000,000 Market Size (4)
$471,000,000 Revenue (4)
$221,590,085 Payroll (3)The Giants (Large)
$1,256,000,000 Market Size (5)
$452,000,000 Revenue (5)

$857,000,000 Market Size (9)
$392,000,000 Revenue (7)
$159,637,244 Payroll (10)The Astros (Mid)
$774,000,000 Market Size (10)
$420,000,000 Revenue (6)

$738,000,000 Market Size (11)
$370,000,000 Revenue (11)
$172.307.808 (7)Pork TwainParticipantIndeed that is true, if only the Cardinals were not being compared to other teams, from much larger population centers, with much better network coverage. The Cards are compared to other teams and when compared to them, they are middle of the pack in market size, which most of us already knew.
Pork TwainParticipantNumbers at the gate, do not determine the market-size
#Factsjack
Pork TwainParticipantI can’t get past how someone could say that the Cards are not a small/mid-market team, when they clearly are. Then to try to compare how they do business to the Dodgers, who like the Yankees, are in one of the largest markets, is just crazy. Teams like the Yankees and Dodgers can do what the Cardinals do, in terms of models, but the Cardinals are never going to be able to do what those teams do in terms of spending.
Pork TwainParticipantI agree with Brian. I do not see them making any huge moves this season, waiting for all of those dead weight contracts to come off the books after the season and the world and revenue, returning to normal. If they don’t start taking on money and improving, then I will be concerned.
20m Molina (2020)
10m Wong (2020)
16m Fowler (2021)
12m Miller (2021)
17m Martinez (2021)
18m Carpenter (2022)Pork TwainParticipantPast trends are what make me nervous about signing ANY pitcher to a long-term contract. Michael Wacha, Carlos Martinez, Shelby Miller, Eric Gagne, Trevor Rosenthal, Barry Zito, Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Homer Bailey, Kerry Wood, Mark Prior, Mark Mulder, etc… I realize there are many more instances of things working out well, but the chance that it could end in disaster, with mid-market team, is why I am ok with the Cards not committing to ANY 7-10 year deals.
Pork TwainParticipantAs always, it is easy to spend the money of others, but for the life of me, I cannot see Wong being $11,000,000 better than Edman.
Pork TwainParticipantHere’s to hoping the Cardinals do not overpay for years gone by and nostalgia.
Pork TwainParticipantDo what they do in college sports, vacate the wins and the titles, but the other teams do not get to count the wins either. 2017, no WS champion.
Pork TwainParticipantFirst, obviously 27 was addressing Mrperkins’ Eric Ludwick comment, by correcting him with Ryan Ludwick and second, we did just trade away two outfielders and might be trading away more in the near future. Why not make this trade to add depth, without really hurting your farm system. The only thing that I have seen so far that has been a poor move, is all of the complaining about this trade. No great gain here, but also no great loss.
Pork TwainParticipantAhahahahaha…this could not happen to a more deserving team or a more deserving man (Lunhow).
Pork TwainParticipantSO you think the Cards are going to have to give up that much more than the Yankers did for Stanton? Just not seeing it
Pork TwainParticipantI would prefer no future trade for Arenado, that would cost us Liberatore and Gorman. This trade was a complete win for the Cards. Now we do not have to watch Jmart play defense anymore.
Pork TwainParticipantI am thankful that you are not working in the medical field. If it is mental health then so be it, but if it is complacency or laziness, then call it that. Those are not the same and you do not “allow” yourself to have mental health issues.
Pork TwainParticipantI remember not too long ago, Carp was considered one of the hardest outs in the MLB and would do a great job fighting of bad pitches, finding one to hit and get on base. Then someone got in his head and said, you should scratch that and just try to hit home runs and here we are.

July 1, 2019 at 8:55 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2019-2020 #96473Pork TwainParticipantEven the Yankees, Red Sox, Giants, have all rebuilt over the last couple of decades but the Cards seem to never be willing to be a seller at the trade deadline. I don’t get it
July 1, 2019 at 6:42 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2019-2020 #96453Pork TwainParticipantFor the life of me, I will never understand why the Cards will not just concede defeat and rebuild, while their trade chips (Ozuna, Carp, Wacha, and Gyroko) have some value to a team that might actually contend in the post-season.
Pork TwainParticipantIt would seem that the only way they would find out for sure is to stay in it. It is not like it is costing them anything to negotiate and make a few offers.
