Well-regarded pitching prospect Matt Liberatore has been traded from the Tampa Bay Rays to the St. Louis Cardinals, sources familiar with the deal tell ESPN. It's part of a trade expected to send major league pieces back to Tampa Bay, which has been searching for outfield bats.

January 9, 2020 at 4:07 pm #118768Still waiting on details.
January 9, 2020 at 4:07 pm #118769I think I love this…..
January 9, 2020 at 4:09 pm #118772If I had to guess, if say for O’Neill and/or Martinez. But that’s just a guess. Seems like a good pickup but cant really judge until we know what was sent back. Either way not often the cardinals get a guy with his raw stuff a year after he was picked. He is supposed to have one of the best curveballs in the minors.
January 9, 2020 at 4:12 pm #118773We’re picking up the Rays third ranked prospect. It would be like most organizations top ranked player in a loaded Rays minor league system.
January 9, 2020 at 4:17 pm #118774I thought I saw O’neill and Bader going to TB on something I clicked on, but can’t find that anywhere.
Welcome to CF in STL Mr. Thomas!
January 9, 2020 at 4:22 pm #118776Imagine Liberatore and Thompson pitching for Palm Beach?
January 9, 2020 at 4:25 pm #118777I like how the Cardinals are finally prioritizing LH pitching.
January 9, 2020 at 4:28 pm #118780I can’t find anything than what I saw earlier with O’neill and Bader going there, and somewhere else saw it was a “5 player deal”….. regardless, at first glance, great job Mo! (Yes I know he isn’t GM, but nothing goes down without him)
Hopefully Mo is on the phone with Weiters agent getting that sorted out as I type this….
January 9, 2020 at 4:30 pm #118781If Tampa Bay is looking for outfield bats, surprised they weren’t in on Tommy Pham. Coming off a 121 wRC+ season, hit 21 home runs. Was traded earlier this winter, as I recall…

January 9, 2020 at 4:30 pm #118782Cards27, agree, if I could add on, Liberatore and Thompson throwing to Ivan Herrera none the less….
January 9, 2020 at 4:31 pm #118783Some folks, including at least one media member, bit on a fake Passan Twitter account…
ABOUT THE NAMES OF THE CARDINALS PLAYERS IN THE TRADE.
Sorry for the incomplete post the first time…
January 9, 2020 at 4:31 pm #118784Brian, I’m confused on that? Is the guy clueless or a bad attempt at humor?
January 9, 2020 at 4:33 pm #118785You would think at least 1 player going back would have some salary attached to him. That way it would free up space to add someone via trade or sign a fa or both.
It also could be that Libratore is flipped for someone else.
January 9, 2020 at 4:33 pm #118786Is this fake news?
January 9, 2020 at 4:37 pm #118791Brian…are you saying didn’t happen? Matt Kelly with MLB.Com, Ken Rosenthal and Mark Polunshuk with MlbTrade Rumors are all reporting this.
January 9, 2020 at 4:40 pm #118793Pitching prospect Matt Liberatore going to cardinals in trade from Rays. STL extra OFs Tyler O’Neill and Jose Martinez were discussed. Possible 1 or both are going to Rays.

January 9, 2020 at 4:42 pm #118795I’d be glad to send Tyler O’Neill and all of his strikeouts to TB. I’d be glad to send that goofball Jose Martinez to TB. I’d still rather keep Bader though as I think there might be some hope for him.
Maybe Fowler went to TB???

January 9, 2020 at 4:42 pm #118796I clarified my post made a few back. Sorry for the confusion.
January 9, 2020 at 4:43 pm #118797Forgot he was Nolan Gorman’s best friend since they were little kids. Seems like getting him was a win everyway you look at it.
January 9, 2020 at 4:47 pm #118798If 2 outfielders are traded, that will thin the outfielders a bit. Liberatore does not have to be protected, roster wise, for several years. I wonder if this wouldn’t be a precursor to resigning Ozuna?
January 9, 2020 at 4:53 pm #118800Harrison Bader is yet another OF who was discussed with Rays. Not confirmed which one(s) are going to Rays in Liberatore deal
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) January 9, 2020
January 9, 2020 at 4:53 pm #118801My first thought when seeing the deal was potentially multiple OF’s (still a big unknown), but does this trade preclude an Ozuna reunion?? 2/30 perhaps? Carp, Fowler and Ozuna coming off the books going into 2022 would give them a lot of play space that offseason.
I’d like to throw in my CMart for Kirby Yates and Luis Patino idea to give us two top 50 pitching prospects is still an option that could be done….. 🙂
January 9, 2020 at 5:33 pm #118802Sorry for the brief outage. You guys broke the site!
The trade between the #Rays and #STLCards is a big one, involving six pieces, three on each side, sources tell The Athletic. At least two of those pieces are draft picks. LHP Matthew Liberatore, heading to STL, still only known name.

January 9, 2020 at 5:33 pm #118803At last check, moments ago, Bader is at least one outfielder the #Cardinals have not been in contact with this evening, just FYI. As long as we're doing this. https://t.co/5Iu3HZHsaa
