Nice to meet you Mr. Edman. I do enjoy watching your son play.

Edman has actually graded out really well in RF this year by metrics. He sometimes looks like an infielder playing outfield, but that’s because he’s an infielder playing outfield. But he’s done the job out there defensively this year, and he’s done it remarkably well.

I’m with Brian, though, in that his value is in being able to play everywhere, and his success in the outfield is likely an anomaly. Permanently moving him to the OF isn’t going to help him or the Cardinals.

Lastly, those who think Edman is going to be a 120 OPS+ guy for the balance of his career are likely suffering from Joe McEwing Fan Disease. He’s not going to slug .500 very often, if ever again, and his on base skills aren’t great, either. He’s more of a .725 – .750 OPS guy than he is the .850 OPS guy he’s been this year (sorry to those of you that see those stats as a foreign language).

But he is a nice player that has done his job all over the place this year. He has real value – but not as a full time outfielder.

Yadi may not be all that good anymore, but he sure is clutch.

I never saw the Edman AB and only saw the swing from Dejong. The TBS app crapped out and came in when they said he was off with the pitch. lol

Then you missed DeJong squaring around and showing the world why Shildt didn’t have him sac bunt last night when they absolutely should have.

Would Edman had made it to 2nd if DeJong hadn’t hacked at the 1st pitch?

This seems like wasted effort if indeed that was the case.

    It wasn’t the first pitch.

It wasn’t even the second pitch.

Burning your backup catcher there with better hitters on the bench is odd for the best manager in the National League.

Manager of the Year has a middle infielder who is incapable of sac bunting.

Schildt not bunting DeJong in the 8th was stupid even to sabermetric folks that tell you to (almost) never bunt.

On the other hand, this team’s record was greater than the sum of its parts, so someone has to get credit.

Seems like yesterday when I was being told I was nuts to say our bullpen was a weakness. Some people don’t understand the difference between a good bullpen ERA and a good bullpen.

Someone post the bullpen rankings so we can see that this was just a fluke. Nothing to see here.

the problem long term is that the China is not on a 4-year election cycle.

And they’ve never lived up to an agreement anyway. This is a no-win.

The problem for our bullpen, though, is that when it is time to shut the door in a close game, we put in a guy in the 9th inning that is either at or worse than the team numbers. He is significantly worse in WHIP, and significantly better in HR/9. And it isn’t like he’s trending up.

I could go on, but that’s the biggest issue from me on our pen. It is helpful to have that stud at the end that no one can touch.

I like this lineup and the defense it brings with it. Ozuna’s no good, but when your next two bottom defenders are Edman at 3B and Fowler in RF, you’re doing pretty well on that side of the ball. And they are certainly capable of scoring runs.

Oh, and Flaherty is worth the price of admission.

Put me down for someone who wants to see Carlson get started in AAA next year, and make his debut sometime in the first few months, never to go back down again (on his way to Cooperstown).

Years Moustakas has been better than Matt Carpenter: 2012 and 2019.
Total WAR by each from 2012 to present: 15.9 and 29

    Probably not the best comp.

Also, don’t misinterpret my defense of Carpenter’s past for an endorsement of his future. I believe that Tommy Edman should be the primary 3B going forward (until/unless he stops hitting entirely). He probably shouldn’t be hitting 2nd, though. That should be Wong until he stops hitting.

Carp was #9 on the MVP list last season – far down from the top of the list.

    What a loser!

He played 2 1/2 good months and pretty much bombed out the rest of the time.

At least you didn’t say one month, I guess. But he hit really well for about a 16 week stretch last summer. That’s more than 2.5 months no matter how you want to slice it.

Well, Edman can’t play every game at 3B. Lord knows, he has to get some time in the OF.

Who dat say who dat. Dat was a Saints invention. One thing you will notice in Cajun country is that everybody respects their elders. If you are talking to an older person you always use Mr. or Miss. as in “Hello Mr Bob.” “How is Miss Florence doing today.” And that concludes todays lesson on Cajun Culture. There will not be a test.

I was born in the Mississippi delta, so I hear ya. I have a Mama, had a Daddy, and the last meal of the day is supper.

    And I’m a Saints fan.

Hey Pugs, Ref your post about Louisiana Cajuns. I am one. Born in New Orleans because that was the closest joint with real doctors but lived in the swamps until the age of 3. Mama always teased me and said they used me for alligator bait but I stunk so bad the gators even turned away. So we moved to town. To this day I have a metal badge on my wall that says “Registered Coon Ass”. I know a lot of folks agree with that last word but I am proud to be a Cajun.

    Who dat?!?!

We’ve had our share of bad play on the field this year, but the only thing that is embarrassing is coming from our dugout.
