Carioca, probably because it would hurt Dexter’s feelings. And since he once said the word “depressed” in an interview, he’s clearly mentally ill and we must cater to that instead of winning.
They can’t get laser balls and strikes into MLB soon enough. That one little thing will improve the game in so many ways, and get rid of garbage like that from garbage umpires. It will also get rid of a ton of the pathetic whining from players.

This. McCarver seems to think that players are significantly worse now than in his day because they strikeout more and hit for triples less. He can’t be bothered to see why that might be.
Seeing McCarver still as popular as he is with both local and national audiences USA sign of how MLB’s market share is aging. That guy is pretty awful. He’s wrong about a ton of things in every broadcast, and you can basically sum him up with, “analytics and advanced metrics are ruining the game, players were better back in my day, and stay off of my lawn.”
Edmonds is so far superior to him that it’s a joke he still has a career.
I think there are going to be some quality RH relievers who end up signing cheap this year. Just too many on the market.
I suspect you are right on that. The problem with relievers, though, is that their results are so volatile. But if someone swoops in and hits on a couple, they could make pretty valuable and cheap flips in July. And, as you mentioned, there is also the chance that a contender could fill out it’s bullpen and get 8th inning production for middle relief money – and that is the type of thing that can propel a team into a championship.
The reliever market is not an easy one to shop, but there is definitely value to be had (along with the big mistakes to be made).
My guess is Holland gets about $3-5 million guaranteed plus large incentives with either a player option or a vesting option. The only reason it is not higher is the large number of quality relievers on the market this year.
So you have him making a fraction of what Joe Kelly and Joakim Soria have already signed for, but you also think he’s unsigned because of all the great relievers out there who need to set the market first.

If he signs for $5 million or less, then the point stands – he’s not being valued by his time in Washington. He’s being valued by what kind of pitcher he is now, which is a guy who used to be good.
So because a FA player doesn’t have a contract yet for next season means they are bad? Britton? Robertson? Harper?
I suppose I could play your game and claim that you are saying that Holland is equal to the player that Bryce Harper is. I won’t, because I know you don’t mean that. And, in turn, obviously you understand the difference in what I was saying, you just wanted a “gotcha” moment.
Holland, last year, couldn’t find anyone willing to pay him until almost the end of Spring Training. Do you think that the three you named will have that happen?
It could be that he’s not signed because he’s expecting to get paid like the guy he was in Washington, and he’s pouring through all of the offers trying to find the right one for him and his family.
Or it could be that he wasn’t very well thought of last year (other than by, apparently, Mike Matheny, God of Bullpens) and he still isn’t well thought of this year.

I don’t understand at all how people can emphasize Holland’s failure in St. Louis, and de-emphasize his success in Washington. Yeah, lets throw out all of Holland’s prior success in MLB, plus his remarkable success in Washington after leaving St. Louis.
Are you talking about the people here on this message board or the people in Major League front offices (who get paid millions of dollars to know what they are doing) who have refused to give him a contract for next season?
he won’t forget that the Cards traded him for the underachieving Heyward. He has some pride.
The underachieving Heyward had a 5.6 WAR in his one year for the Cardinals.
The prideful Shelby Miller has had a total of 4.3 WAR in his 3 years since the Cardinals traded him.The entitlement that comes about from winning one World Series since the fall of the Ottoman Empire is amazing.
Fowler last year seemed to be saying he needed to play to fix his issues to get his production up. That is fine, i get that, but is it really the best solution if he is having psychological issues?
It is the only known cure for Bench Warming Sadness Syndrome.
For the record, whether he sucks as a result of mental health issues or physical issues really doesn’t make a difference to a fan. All human sympathies can still be there for either, but, at the end of the day, fans just want to see the team win.
I feel for Fowler regardless of the realities of his depression. It’s not easy for anyone when they lose their mojo, and it is human nature to blame everything possible to explain it away.
I actually believe he will be much better this year. I’m just not sure if that’ll be enough to justify starting him over Martinez and/or O’Neill.

atriple, I encourage you to do some investigation on minor league living conditions. A simple Google search will provide plenty of reading material.
I “investigated” for three years, thank you. It was some truly brave journalism. And minor leaguers made less then (two decades ago) than they do now.
atriple, it is made up because you believe it to be made up. You have a right to your opinion and to express it, but to assert it as fact because you do not agree is not valid.
I asserted nothing as fact, I just read the words that came out of Dexter’s mouth and applied Occam’s razor. Others trying to insinuate a mental health disorder are the ones trying to assert something.

do you know how low minor league player salaries are? They would make more greeting customers at the local Walmart. Roberts is an exception because he got a huge bonus. Most players get a few thousand dollars to sign and not much more per year.
This is a fact, but it isn’t like they are living a life of poverty. After all, these guys manage to keep their bellies full, a roof over their head, and a heavy stock of weed and beer (**this is in no way stating that ALL players do – but it is a higher percentage than Walmart greeters).
The only people claiming that Fowler was anything more than Miriam Webster’s #1 definition of depressed (low in spirits : SAD) are cackling hens looking for page views and/or virtue signaling.
When a prideful man who’s had a pretty great MLB career is struggling mightily at his profession, there is nothing abnormal about his spirits being down. In fact, I’d be worried a lot more if he wasn’t really down about it. Making the leap to clinical depression is really odd here.
The real question is if the down year was him falling a cliff, or was it an aberration that he can come back from? I really hope it is the latter, and, obviously, do does Mo (and there is nothing wrong with that). From a fan’s perspective, of course we want to see our RF mash – and it is natural for us to prefer it be the young guy who is “stuck” with our team for the next 5 or 6 years over the old guy who still wears Cubs gear.
Let’s hope for everyone’s sake we see smiling Fowler (and he does have a contagious smile) mashing NL pitching all summer. That way, if O’Neill seems ready, we have options in RF.
That said, it is perfectly okay for people have and express the opinion that they’d prefer he not be on the team. And it is not okay for people to insinuate that those people are insensitive because Fowler has a psychological condition that is (so far as we know) completely made up by a few in the media.
And the guy who supposedly needed to disappear wanted to disappear to RF of a Major League baseball team?
Again, I know people who say they are depressed because they have to eat leftovers that night. People hearing Fowler flippantly say he was depressed during an interview and spinning it to a debilitating mental illness is hilarious to watch.
Thinking about having Fowler start in RF for the Cardinals for the first two months of the season makes me depressed. Someone send a straight jacket.
People are using the word “depression” to mean feeling sad or not feeling well.
What you are describing is the definition of the word depressed – which is what Fowler actually said. For some reason, people here seem to think he is speaking of clinical depression, which, I am certain, is not what Dexter Fowler is suffering from.
As for Jose Martinez in RF over Fowler – absolutely. If Fowler even comes close to Martinez’s offensive output, Mo will claim some huge victory, while also ignoring that Fowler is in the same ballpark of terrible defense as Jose.
But Jose can’t hit lefthanded, and what we really need are more guys who can hit lefty – for some idiotic reason. Martinez has a career OPS against righties of .813, which is only a little below Fowler’s glory years that people are praying Fowler can get back to.
I’ve got nothing against Fowler – I just think this team would be better off without him.
I’m not sure that using Heyward’s albatross of a contract is really a defense of Mo, who offered as much or more.
I get that other teams make bad deals, too. They fork over huge dollars for 6 WAR players and get burned. We fork over big dollars for 6 or 7 one (or less) WAR players and get burned – both with money and with a clogged roster.
I’m not saying the job is an easy one, but there has to be someone better at identifying ways to spend limited budget dollars on lesser players. Thankfully, it is limited to our MLB guys. How many millions have we burned on mediocre talents that performed worse than our MiLB replacements would have?
This is why superstars are far more valuable than people think. Guys you know can give you 4+ WAR, year in and year out – you over-pay for those guys and just surround them with arb and pre-arb guys. We have had the young talent to do this over the last several years, but we wasted money on second-tier gambles that crapped out.
They need to keep the people making minor league decisions, and dump everyone involved in the Major League decisions.
I love getting Goldschmidt, but it doesn’t take a sharp mind to go after a guy that good. Sharp minds in our front office wouldn’t be throwing away $40 million on players who figure to gave you less than zero WAR last year (and this doesn’t include Wainwright, because I’m not going to fault our FO for him).
This front office has a terrible record with MLB contracts and decisions. That specific group should have gone with Matheny in on purge.
I find it odd that when someone says they were depressed that so many people just assume that clinical depression is involved instead of it being the far more simple explanation – that he meant he felt depressed. Occam’s razor, and all that.
Is it public info that Fowler has mental health issues?
As to the comment about society no longer just “firing” people for mental health issues, that’s not really true. Also, most people who are having mental health issues at work wouldn’t get paid the same whether fired or they are kept on, as would be the case for Fowler. Let’s not pretend it is the same as putting someone with a family out on their rear ends.
Let’s hope Fowler can get on a tear this year, hit like he did in the two years prior to last year, and then we can pawn him off onto someone else a year from now.
I’ll never understand why hitting .220 left handed is somehow better than hitting .260 right handed.
