A rain delay may keep Carpenter from his 4th strikeout.
August 21, 2019 at 9:58 pm #103300At the game tonight watching this lackluster performance. For the record, fans boo’d Carp after his S/O by Claudio. I wasn’t one of them, but can’t blame them. Terrible at-bat on top of many sub par plate appearances tonight.

August 22, 2019 at 12:02 am #103303Rain is locked in for a while I guess, so it’s been called and the Brewers have a rain-shortened victory. The Carp AB with the tying runners in scoring position looms even larger now. You gotta think of these things, Shildty. They knew the weather was rolling in and they needed to strike when they had the chance.
Sometimes the way the Cards cater to unproductive vets is frustrating. cubs took care of business in a wild one and pluck first place away from the Cards.

August 22, 2019 at 6:11 am #103305I know the rules on rainouts but this is a pennant race and the Brewers do come back to Busch in mid-August so why not finish the game then?
August 22, 2019 at 8:25 am #103320I guess my praise of Waino yesterday turned out to be a big jinx.
The rain sure did hurt us. I think we had a good chance to come back and win that game. The Brewers bullpen is gassed and Hader is not what he used to be.
And of course the Cubs have to come back in dramatic fashion. Thanks Giants.

ParticipantI wonder if it would be better to just have Carpenter basically close out his ragged 2019 season now and go with a replacement that should be able to out-produce what we would have with Carpenter playing/hitting?
He goes to the plate and is embarrassing himself. He should feel that taking a seat would be in his best interest. I can’t see why the FO doesn’t realize that the Carp run at the end of 2018 won’t be happening in 2019. The division race is very tough… one lose that we should have won may be the difference between 1st and 2nd, or 3rd.
If Mozeliak says that “the FO is all in” do what’s right to give us the best chance to win.

stlcard25ParticipantI feel that’s what happened with Fowler last year…sure, he was hurt but he stayed out a suspicious amount of time.
The main issue is that the options aren’t that great. Munoz has been worse than Carp and Edman has been slightly better but is bound to be overexposed soon.
It’s hard to know what can really be done with him at this point. It’s sad to watch him hit and a good chunk of it must be mental.
August 22, 2019 at 11:20 am #103341Even if Edman didn’t get a hit the rest of the year I still think he would be an upgrade over Carp at 3B because Edman has a much much stronger arm.
August 22, 2019 at 11:50 am #103345Well since I’m obviously not alone I can’t help but think came back too soon from Memphis. The team was not losing without him. Right now he is just a glove at third base. I looked over stats last night since he got back and Edmunds are far better. Does not seem to be much sense in playing him over Edmund at third. Don’t really care about his contract, he has to be able to perform or give somebodyelse a chance. Same thing with Dexter last year but he came back. Can’t hang your hat on stuff from the past, move on or get left behind.
August 22, 2019 at 12:16 pm #103347Well, Edman can’t play every game at 3B. Lord knows, he has to get some time in the OF.
August 22, 2019 at 3:28 pm #103364Shildt contradicted himself last night. He couldn’t pinch hit for Carp because it was only the 6th and he didn’t want a short bench. WHAT?!?! The night before he pinch hit for Wacha in the 4TH INNING!
I really hate these BS excuses, especially when it contradicts what you just did.
Shildt frustrated after ballgame is called early due to rain: "We were set up to compete and win the game for sure. So I would've liked to have the opportunity."#TimeToFly pic.twitter.com/Lpof4CwNS0

Please provide the media source for this supposed quote. I find it highly unlikely since his boss said just THE OPPOSITE.

On NOT being all-in:“It’s not like, ‘Oh, we better win the division next year or we’re going to turn everything upside down.’ That’s not our view. I think that’s a dangerous approach because then you put people in position going all-in as the model. ‘Forget about two, three, five years down the road when, oh well — I’m not going to be around. So, I don’t care.’ I don’t think that is the way to operate a team.”

Participantwell it was an obvious pinch hitting situation. we aren’t talking about the 4th or 5th inning, it was the 7th. it also was probably gonna be our best shot. we were probably gonna see hader for both innings an dwhile he isn’t as good this year, hes still pretty tough. theres no guarantee you get the same shot. the game being called cemented that fact but there was a good possibility we weren’t going to get a better shot anyway. could using a pinch hitter there hurt us later yea if it ends up being tied and going extras, maybe. but you have to get the game tied up for that to even possibly happen, we didn’t do that.
August 22, 2019 at 5:40 pm #103386I am not defending not using a pinch hitter last night, but hitting for the pitcher is a different situation than hitting for the third baseman. We already know they are trying to will Carpenter out of his slump, but Shildt isn’t about to say that. He didn’t have to. FWIW, I stopped watching all manager’s post-game remarks. Not the place to go if you are looking for candor, IMO.
