Leone gives up a run but the Cards get one back in the 7th. 2-1. Really going to be big to get something going in the Pena-pitcher-Carp due up next inning.
Yepez moving off 3B takes a little luster off his hitting prowess but if he can keep it up, I wouldn’t hate having a slugging 1B guy ready to move up in the next 2-3 years. Would be interesting in that he was the return for the last slugging 1B prospect we had (not counting guys like Voit who are seen as more fringe/depth prospects nationally).
I would say that Cmart has been our best pitcher so far, but Wacha has held his own. I would take 6 innings a Starr at mid 3s ERA from him and be satisfied.
Time will tell if it ends up working in the Cards’ favor but…with Bader’s career numbers against LHP indicates he probably should have started over Fowler tonight.
Yelich would have cost so much more than Ozuna, and I’m pretty confident that in the end they’ll have similar value this year and next. Ozuna will come around.
The big offensive issue now is the major slumps from Carpenter, Fowler and Wong. They’re all getting on base a bit but we need them all hitting .250 or better and we’ll see the offense start clicking. I’m just not certain that will happen.
Frustrating loss…really the kind of game where everything had to go just wrong for the Cards to lose, and they all did. Hopefully Bowman is the next with a “DL” stint because he’s a massive liability right now…doubly so since Matheny can’t figure out that he’s not any good.
Now first and third with none out. The scoreless streak had to end some time…I was pretty worried that it was gonna be tonight. Appears it’s very likely to be the case.

Reyes could be a nice boost to an already good season…or (like when he was called up) a reason to keep watching if the season goes south. 100 innings this year would be a pretty robust workload considering his late start. He could be a real weapon if he’s stretched out to start but isn’t needed to do just that. A true “fireman” for the late innings.
The appeal of a trade for Donaldson or Machado would be to add a championship level piece to a true contender. If the Cards are on a 95+ win pace in late July, maybe it would be worth it. If not, adding a marginal upgrade like Moose or Beltre (if it’s even an upgrade) wouldn’t make that much sense, IMO.
To answer Mike above, if the Orioles wouldn’t be blown away to receive both Flaherty AND Kelly in a trade rather than a compensation pick, I dunno what would blow them away. I wouldn’t make that deal…but I’m sure that would get it done.
I would expect a bounce back from Luke this game. He got hit around a bit last start but he’s too good to be down for long. I’m thinking that ERA is back in the 3s after this start.
Gray-At this point it’s a service time deal for me. We’re getting a full extra year of Flaherty, maybe closer to two given the TJ recovery. I think both could be excellent starters but Jack has a bit better control and could be more likely to hit his #2 ceiling than Reyes his #1 upside.
To be clear, I would rather have both than a rental on Machado.

While I really would enjoy seeing Machado in St Louis uniform, I’m just having a hard time seeing this team pointing up the prospects or cash needed to get him. At this point I’d be more apt to trade Reyes than Flaherty, but I’d imagine the FO won’t want to drop either. Parting with either would be easier in a sign and trade but that’s just not going to happen unless they’re willing to offer record breaking numbers, $350M+.
Bikemike…while it may appear that we have some sort of favorable roll of the schedule, consider that the Cards have only had .500+ teams on their schedule besides the Reds. The “others” have a 48-28 record and that includes the other two NL division leaders and the second place team in our own division. So I wouldn’t exactly say the record is a mirage.
That being said…would like to see them get >.500 on the non-Reds teams soon.
Would be nice to see Oviedo pick it up and show the promise that he seemed to have when he signed for such big money. Nice start last night for him.
Time will tell whether the team is hitting their stride or just beating up on a bad team…but good to take care of business against the teams they “should beat” on the schedule.
Homer Bailey pitched surprisingly well last time out against the Redbirds…let’s hope the offense can get to him today.
