Bases loaded and nobody out, Paulie D walks to score a run. Now would be a great time for Kolten to break out of the slump.
Is Bowman really one of this club’s 7 best relievers at this point? Feels like Brebbia and Mayers have to be better.
Hopefully, NJ315. This game is probably out of reach so I would prefer to sacrifice some Weaver ERA to save the bullpen for the weekend. Could be a start where he gives up 10-12 runs in 4-5 innings, for all that it matters.
Weaver is in big trouble. The pen may be heavily tested today.
On another dark note, Lester looks like he could throw a no hitter every time he faces the Cardinals. Hope that they can somehow get to him today.
Personally, I don’t mind the idea of Flaherty coming up a bit later on and maybe finishing the season in relief. He had less than 150 IP last year, so a huge bump may not be in order.
Hopefully the Reds don’t rally around the new guy this weekend. They can at least wait for the next Cubs series. ?
Good news for Tyler. He’s mashing the ball, and has earned his promotion. Given that the Cards never used that 8th reliever, it makes some sense to broaden the bench.
There’s too much of a track record for Holland suggesting that he’ll get things turned around. The nice thing is that the bullpen has enough arms that it isn’t imperative that he does. Still, it would be good to have him get back to career norms and be the “closer.” Then use the best arms to get us to the 9th, hopefully without needing a lot of Bowman.
Good to win one in the cold at Wrigley. Now let’s see Weaver shut em down this afternoon and leave with a 6 game win streak!
Almost all free agents are paid based on past performance. Unfortunately, the Cards have tried to pay them based on future value and that has rarely paid off in the form of them actually signing said free agents.
If Donaldson is a 6 WAR talent (and he still may be) and puts up 15ish in the first three years of a deal, he would be worth all that contract by then. It is a possibility…as is the chance that he tails off quickly. Such is the risk.
Personally I’d rather have Machado, of course…but I just can’t see this front office going $300+ million for one guy.
If he comes back and shows that he still has an arm…probably. But we would need to move at least one, likely two of Carpenter, Gyorko, Wong and Martinez to make it a better fit.
For whatever reason, Carpenter just hits better in the leadoff spot. I can’t see how it would hurt to move him there. But maybe there is something nagging in his back/shoulder that’s impacting his swing.
I’ll also add that the shift kills Marp. I like the extra power but I miss the days when he sprayed doubles all over the place. The pull approach just hasn’t looked as pretty of late.
Still early, but Yepez with a slash line of .500/.543/.843 so far. Maybe he’s catching on and that return for Adams won’t feel so light. I remember Juan being a common punching bag last season.
Dylan Carlson also is playing well, with a 1.010 OPS on the young season. Would be good to see a couple of solid bats start moving up through the system.
Two guys going who seem to have the stuff to put up better results than they have so far, especially the K numbers. I had read a lot on Hudson with his sinker-slider maybe being a lights out reliever at one point…wonder how long he’ll get as a starter before they start thinking that way?
This is a big early series. The Cubs have been scuffling a bit so far. A good start by Waino tonight would be a great start to the series, as the second matchup of Wacha/Lester doesn’t appear to be in the Cards’ favor and Weaver/Hendricks should be a good even match. To get two of three would be great.
It would be an interesting matchup, to be sure. The gut says the Reds would be a little better, but if you add Reyes I think the Redbirds might be able to take a 5 game series.
I’m a fan of Weaver and the way he pitches. I think we should get the W tonight if we can push 3+ runs across.
Feels good to break out a bit there. Now let’s get going on stringing together hits the rest of this series!
At least they got the tie. Would have been good to get more than 1 run in the bases loaded, no out situation though.
Not to mention, that Memphis lineup is killing it. Who are you gonna pitch to if you try to pitch around O’Neill? I agree that he’ll need to be on top of things to maintain plate discipline to prep for the majors but he’s probably being aggressive just because he can right now.
