Martinez is likely to always be a good hitter who might struggle to be viable in the field. Seems like a good guy and a hard worker who is easy to root for. He does have some value.
Machado is an elite player who probably makes the Cards an upper echelon contender for the NL pennant instantly. Low chance of resigning but having a great season.
If the trade could be done now I’d do it in a second. I dunno if the O’s would though. At the deadline…it becomes a more favorable deal for Baltimore who I think would take it if we added a filler prospect. Hard to say if I’d like the deal though, long term.
I think Marp will eventually start to hit again. He’s still got the eye and he says he’s not injured so you figure he will get it turned around. The lineup certainly could use the boost that the “normal” Carpenter provides.
Gyorko is the kind of guy who can be overexposed and probably should be a 400-500 PA guy. But while he’s hot, I agree that he needs to be in the lineup. I’d prob let Carpenter work through his slump while platooning Fowler and Wong for a bit.

MikolasBy golly, it’s the first game of the series, so you’ve gotta play your opening day lineup /mathenaging. Then they’ll be shocked when a lineup “anchored” by three sub-Mendoza hitters scores one run off 3 hits in 7 innings off Quintana.
Once again with the lefty…let’s see if they’re smart enough to start Bader over Fowler with his 1 for 22 start hitting RH. I can’t say that I’m optimistic they’ll make the right call.
Better to win than lose but hopefully the team plays better against the Cubs this weekend. Cmart was good once again and so was Norris.
Ideally they would be able to consolidate some of the mid level pieces they have into a higher end player. Would probably have to part with a plus prospect to make that happen though.
As good as it felt things were going coming into this series is as bad as things feel now. Can’t hit, bullpen is as bad as the last two years. To have zero base runners until the very end of the 7th against a no name making his MLB debut is a joke.
Bader starts the wrong game in the series, of course. I don’t think it’s a major stretch to say that starting Fowler and his 0-5, 3K performance was a major side factor to losing the game Friday. Hopefully Harrison can get a couple hits against the rookie today and make Matheny look better.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Hicks join the reliever shuffle, although he could probably use a month or so in Memphis to work on control and missing bats. He’s a disaster waiting to happen with that K-BB ratio.
Bw52, Pham is far from the biggest issue with this team right now.
For starters, as mentioned before the game… Bader should have started over Fowler. Fowler as a righty this year is hitting .045/.185/.045 for a -20 wRC+. Small sample size I know, but that’s ridiculous. Bader in his short career is at .379/.471/.655 for a 202 wRC+ against LHP. Small samples too but in his minor league career he’s been absurd against lefties. Iirc his lowest OPS year he was still over 1.100 against them. Absolutely no excuse for NOT starting him over Fowler against every single lefty from here on out.
Well deserved loss, and a very pathetic effort all around from the 6th inning on. Two hits and 7 strikeouts for the offense, and obviously the Holland implosion.
Bowman hung on by a thread. So much pressure on the pitching staff, need to get a run in the top of the 11th.
I thought Holland would end up being a decent signing for one year. I’m pretty much ready to DFA him now. Bring up Brebbia and send him back to wherever he came from.
This game has backbreaker written all over it. Come on, Holland…buckle down and get out of this with one run or none.
Mikolas was cruising along, then homer-single-single and the Pirates are on the edge of getting right back in the game.
Sac fly makes it 5-2, still one out and man on first. Need to stop the bleeding.

Definitely hoping to see Bader get the start against the lefty tonight, and Gyorko should be in for Wong or Carpenter as well. If Miles can get us a quality start, gotta like the chances of coming away with a win.
“Removed from the rotation”…?? That’s a pretty fickle assessment for two bad starts, don’t you think? All he’s done since his first cup of tea in 2016 is put up a 3.17 FIP last year and strung up three good starts to the season. I think he’s more than earned his chance to figure it out…and I fully believe he will.
