Most of the pundits are saying the Cardinals are the frontrunner for a Machado trade. Makes sense given that the Cardinals are top heavy with MLB ready prospects. The problem apparently is that the Orioles want pitching, and that no doubt, means that they want Reyes or Flaherty as the centerpiece of a trade for Machado. Given that Machado is surely a rental, I can’t see the Cardinals including either of those two pitchers in a trade.
I’m guessing that Machado’s agent is thinking $30M AVV, but for 13 years, with 13 years being the new floor for length of contract for a player like Machado. After all, Stanton got 13 years, so why shouldn’t Machado?
April 23, 2018 at 9:24 am #49831Just personally, I dont think machado gets 13 years..unless its a creative contract with club options etc..He will prob get 10yrs with an opt out..the problem is while he can still likely hit, will he have the same range a few years from now? I for one am glad the cardinals have largely stayed away from the huge contracts.
edit: also i dont think the cards would give away flaherty for any rental unless we were in a serious postseason hunt, but they would obviously in a sign and trade situation…
its important to remember though that this is why we draft pitching, to get a competitive advantage in the space, then trade…or at least thats the idea
April 23, 2018 at 9:33 am #49836I wouldn’t mind a 10 year $300M deal with a couple of opt outs. He can play SS for now then slide him over to 3B as he ages. The more immediate question is how to frame a deal for this year. If he is a two month rental no way I offer Reyes or Flaherty.
April 23, 2018 at 10:13 am #49847I agree, although as crazy as it sounds i wonder if he would bite on a 10yr/300mm considering..
Hes only 25 and already a 30 War career player, an elite defender and seemingly on a breakout season with the bat. In fact he might be on the same level demand wise as harper, i really dont that thats a stretch.
There is no way the cards will deal reyes, but i could see flaherty to get the deal done in a sign and trade. Im guessing carp would be the odd man out if so in a salary dump.

ParticipantHe will probably have to play 3B sooner rather than later. Would Machado push DeJong off SS?
April 23, 2018 at 10:33 am #49850Yes 100%… considering his range it would really solve most of our infield defensive probs..

stlcard25ParticipantWhile I really would enjoy seeing Machado in St Louis uniform, I’m just having a hard time seeing this team pointing up the prospects or cash needed to get him. At this point I’d be more apt to trade Reyes than Flaherty, but I’d imagine the FO won’t want to drop either. Parting with either would be easier in a sign and trade but that’s just not going to happen unless they’re willing to offer record breaking numbers, $350M+.
April 23, 2018 at 7:43 pm #49891stlcard35-
i agree with your figures, but i just refuse to believe the cards FO will be willing to offer that kind of $$
and i dont blame them…who needs a ss/3b? if say the yanks are out, most likely boston, or the nats if harper leaves? they could put zimmerman at 1b…i still dont count out balt to resign…
Im curious though about your opinion about flaherty over reyes…do you just feel the latter’s upside is overvalued?
April 23, 2018 at 8:00 pm #49892
stlcard25ParticipantGray-At this point it’s a service time deal for me. We’re getting a full extra year of Flaherty, maybe closer to two given the TJ recovery. I think both could be excellent starters but Jack has a bit better control and could be more likely to hit his #2 ceiling than Reyes his #1 upside.
To be clear, I would rather have both than a rental on Machado.
April 23, 2018 at 9:01 pm #49893I do not think a deal for Machado is realistic. Giving up Flaherty or Reyes is too much of a risk on a likely rental (I doubt Machado is going to pass on his free agent opportunity).
Unless the club can somehow come to terms with him a long term deal, which would open up a premium pitcher prospect going the other way, then we should play the hand we have been currently dealt.
But for fun, let’s say we make Machado a deal he can’t refuse, then who goes the other way. Undoubtedly Reyes or Flaherty as we have discussed, plus probably a good bullpen arm like Brebbia. Then you send them Carpenter and another prospect, perhaps Kelly or Knizner. Maybe we throw in Mejia, who they can use at shortstop for the remainder of this year.
April 24, 2018 at 9:18 am #49918a trade for him seems reckless with our current team
a mega potentially reckless deal for him….that is out only shot IMO…and i think i give it to him…age and performance seem in line with what we want
i personally would prefer Arenado
there are guys like Chapman from the A’s who has a low-ish average but hits for power and is pretty great with the glove…and is young and cheap… trading young and cheap high upside guys for other young and cheap high upside guys is more to my liking…
If i have to deal my prize chips…i want prize chips back…not rentals
If i want to spend big bucks i want age, performance, defense everythingMachado NOW or Donaldson NOW doesnt seem a good idea
Someone mentioned Beltre on another thread… maybe a guy like him would be good for rental push…but as always depending on the price
April 24, 2018 at 9:39 am #49920Beltre and Moustakas will both be available in July and much cheaper than Machado or Donaldson.
April 24, 2018 at 11:09 am #49931the chip on Moose’s shoulder is probably pretty huge right now…might get some good mileage out of it
April 24, 2018 at 11:41 am #49934
stlcard25ParticipantThe appeal of a trade for Donaldson or Machado would be to add a championship level piece to a true contender. If the Cards are on a 95+ win pace in late July, maybe it would be worth it. If not, adding a marginal upgrade like Moose or Beltre (if it’s even an upgrade) wouldn’t make that much sense, IMO.
To answer Mike above, if the Orioles wouldn’t be blown away to receive both Flaherty AND Kelly in a trade rather than a compensation pick, I dunno what would blow them away. I wouldn’t make that deal…but I’m sure that would get it done.
April 24, 2018 at 2:23 pm #49942I don’t think MO would trade Flaherty for a rental. I sure hope not.
April 24, 2018 at 2:44 pm #49943Cards are to cheap to really offer Manny what he is going to get anyway so the point of trading anything worthwhile for him is stupid.
April 25, 2018 at 12:02 pm #50075Wong, Weaver and Flaherty for Arenado. I just solved the 3rd base problem and added a great third place hitter. You’re welcome everyone.
April 28, 2018 at 9:33 am #50383Machado and his upcoming contract:
How much?April 28, 2018 at 9:51 am #5038414NyquisT
ParticipantI love Arenado but mspaid just gave COL 2/5 of our starting rotation. Thanks for your opinion though.
April 28, 2018 at 12:37 pm #50395I think the Cubs will trade for Machado this July which will make their offense even tougher to handle.
April 28, 2018 at 2:30 pm #5040514Nyquist:
Now that you mention it I guess I was too generous.
April 30, 2018 at 9:48 am #50568This blog lists the Cardinals as the favorites to get Machado this July. I don’t see it myself.
April 30, 2018 at 10:02 am #50572If you’re going to trade for Machado, trade now, not in July.
Baltimore is already buried within their division. The Cardinals still have a chance to win theirs. They just need to bench Fowler. Platoon Carpenter/JMart. Gyorko/DeJong at 3B and Gyorko/Wong at 2B. Or trade one of Wong, Gyorko or Carpenter as part of the Machado deal (to trade Carpenter, would have to send additional prospect back to Baltimore, but might be worth it to dump his salary).
April 30, 2018 at 10:08 am #50573Moose would be more of an option if were willing to part with anyone on the current roster plus a prospect. Might be able to jettison one of our high priced veterans if they aren’t up to snuff come mid June-July as long as were willing to eat some contract. Far as prospects go just pick one in the 15-20 range. Royals farm system is complete trash IMO. They’d likely land in the top 6-7 propects in that organization. They’d likely want a pitching prospect i’d imagine although they need help everywhere.
April 30, 2018 at 10:23 am #50577I agree! If you want Machado then the next 15 days is the time to do it. However I just don’t see us a match unless it’s just prospects they want. I mean Wong doesn’t fit with Schoop there. Carpenter doesn’t fit because they’ve got Davis and Trumbo and right now you just can’t trade Gyorko with the current situations with Wong and Carpenter.
Idealy you want to dump a contract on them in and deal but no one fits becsuse they’ve got a couple bad ones like we do currently but a hot streak in the next 15-20 days can change that tune quickly.
