Concerning the 5 day window, I hope all 6 players Marylin called out are allowed to walk.
If the FO is considering bringing Kitt back, he couldn’t face lefties well last season. He allowed the highest ops on our roster (.908 / 147 ops+) of those who faced at least 100 LH batters.Libby struggles vs righties, but as a reference point to Kitt, Libby allowed a .823 ops / 133 ops+ to righties across 220 PA’s in 2024.
Both Kitt and Libby can hold their same side matchups to an ops in the .500’s, but the message board strongly favors Kitts production?
If Mo trades Helsley, he could consider bringing back Kitt as a low salaried “closer”, but Kitt’s splits suggest we shouldn’t, if winning is still on the table.
If we choose a cheapie closer because our “reset” traded away Helsley, at least Kitt would keep the “saves” cost off our young players career totals and arb salaries, but, Kitt recorded one save in 8 save opps last season.
Sadly, it’s hard to talk of next season or its players, when W/L has become secondary.
If our pipeline is so destitute that we need to hire in a relief pitcher who will be 35 by opening day, then ok.
Kitty is not a closer. But he’s a tremendously valuable arm in the pen. Despite his age, he needs to be resigned. He’s cheap and he’s effective…….that’s a win-win in anyone’s book. If left out on the open market, he’ll be scooped up so quick your head will spin.
While still remaining somewhat competitive. You have to keep a couple of the old horses(especially the inexpensive yet quality ones)around or the young ones will run totally amuck.
Those three have accumulated 6 saves, and 16 blown saves in their careers. Not that it matters in 2025 and beyond, so sure, why not. Might as well give them the blown saves. Might help hold their arb salaries down for Bill.
It’s not exactly fair to compare saves and blown saves for a guy who’s not pitching in the 9th most of the time. Any of the three choices would be a step down from Helsley, but Helsley could be a step down from his past stats too. It would be nice to have the elite closer for one more year, but if he walks for nothing then they’re not exactly going to benefit a lot from 78 wins vs 72.
Unless you are investing in Mariano Rivera spending big money on a closer is a fool’s errand. The Cardinals should cash in on Helsley before he implodes.
I think Libby could be a weapon out of the pen if they would finally just leave him there and stop the fantasy of him being a starter.
I’ll be shocked if they sign a 35 year old reliever. We are going to need a 9th inning guy going forward, so they will want to see how guys look, not punt and run a 35 year old out there.
I also think it would be foolish to commit a lot of money to Helsley. He’s been good, but closers are almost universally prone to scatter and go south in a hurry and I expect Helsley to continue that trend. The Cardinals will in all probability approach the search for a 9th inning guy like they’ve always done which is to run an arm out there until they find one that’s reasonably effective at recording the last 3 outs without surrendering a late lead.
The Cardinals will probably decline his option. Whether they try to bring him back on a cheaper one year deal remains to be seen but I kind of doubt it.
I wasn’t trying to establish those relievers effectiveness in “hold” scenarios 25.
If Helsley is gone, those same relievers who are not established in saves, are likely going be asked to contribute saves.
Maybe it’s not “exactly fair” to expect immediate results, was my point.
For some reason, Loutos got a lot of 9th inning work at Memphis. It will be interesting to see what the Bloom peeps do with him, especially being a NDFA.
