The 51-48 Cardinals are now in fourth place, 8 1/2 games behind the Cubs. They are also fourth in the race for the final Wild Card. In two games in AZ, they’ve been outscored 17-4.

But today is a new day…

With 3 WC slots a team has to be really, really bad to be ‘out’ of the playoffs race – which is exactly as intended to keep more fan bases engaged as long as possible.

In each league the 3 division winners and 1 WC team felt about right but as usual – more money rules. The sad thing was a that no matter how much money the players and teams make it will never ever be enough.

The pitching match-ups makes this one look like another blow out and a sweep for the snakes. But as baseball goes, just when you think you have it figured out, things change. Thus my guess is Mikolas is on today and we take a 3-2 win to Denver and avoid the sweep.

Then we will sweep the lowly Rox and people will start to get excited again that maybe, just maybe, we can stay in the hunt.

I hope you’re right, Bikemike, but I’d say the odds of Mikolas turning in a real nice day’s work are incredibly long. But if he does, I’m going to ask you ride with me to the gas station to buy a lottery ticket…

I think we’ll get good Mikolas today just like BikeMike. 6 innings, 1 earned run. That’s my bet anyway. Watch him go 2/3 with 6 runs.

As short of leash for Mikolas as possible. Have Matz on the ready the 3rd time through the order. About the best advice I can give Oli if he wants to steal a win. Might want to score a few runs as well.

Arizona is a good hitting team playing in a hitters park. Mikolas doesn’t miss a lot of bats.

Unless the Dbacks hit a lot of atem balls it could be another long day for the Cards.

Maybe a high scoring affair something like 8-7? The Cardinal bats are due for a big day!

Mikolas is spent….kaput….gassed….exhausted…..weary……but with the all star break rest, maybe the esteemed BicycleMike and Jnevel are on to something here? Maybe Mikolas spins a nice game today. But I highly doubt it. He probably is the epitome of mediocrity today, thus giving our boys a chance of skipping town with a victory under their belts. But if the Diamondbacks are any kind of a team whatsoever, they will complete the sweep vs a team that’s stumbling from side to side along the ropes. What’s for din-din one may ask? It’s another trip over to Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse where I’ll be opting for the baked halibut, asparagus spears, garlic mashed potatoes and for dessert, a cruise through Popeye’s drive thru lane to secure 3 scrumpdillyitous apple cinnamon pies…….to which I think I’ll jazz (not that they need any jazzing) them up with some Breyer’s vanilla bean ice cream gracing their tops.

Will we be able to score any runs?

When you don’t have anybody that can hit it becomes difficult to score runs.

Mikolas being Mikolas…….4-0 Diamondbacks in the 1st and still only 1 out. Suarez the big blow…..a long 3 run shot high up into the left field rafters.

Four runs for one out. Just sit on your hands Mo.
    Good luck tomorrow boys.

Mikolas out early again to throw some BP! This is ridiculous! He would not be starting for any other mlb team! Good Grief!

Not one of Mo’s best contract extensions. And a NTC to boot.

Kip Wells was the worst starting Cardinals pitcher I can recall. Mikolas is making me forget all about him.

For a team that complains about not having enough money we have used 30 million extending Wainwright and Mikolas the last two years! Those kind of decisions are wby we are where we are!

Suarez loves Mikolas’ offerings……but who doesn’t these days. He’s tagged home runs #34 & #35 and we’re only 1/3 through today’s action……actually a little more than 1/3 as there’s no legitimate hope that we’ll be seeing Arizona batting in the bottom of the 9th on this otherwise fine Sunday afternoon.

Kelly generously issues free passes to the first 3 Cardinal batters here in the 5th……the bottom 3 by the way. If we don’t seize this golden opportunity then we’re really in bad shape. I’m predicting 3 runs.

And we only plate 1 run on a feeble groundnut to 1st base. 5-2 AZ as we venture on to the bottom of the 5th in beautiful Phoenix, Arizona.

I’d give my left pinkie for Milwaukee’s starting 5:

    1. Misiorowski
    2. Peralta
    3. Woodruff
    4. Priester
    5. Quintana

How can they get beat in a series?

Yeah, unfortunately reality was too “real”, and we got the Mikolas we are used to seeing. Digging a 4-0 deficit in the first inning against a quality hurler like Kelly is a good way to insure getting swept.

Up 2-1 since the warm-up inning. That’s a new Manfred rule you guys didn’t know about. He put it in place last year because Dodgers fans never get to their seats until at least the second inning.

the sweep by Arizona is probably a blessing in disguise, now we can be heavy sellers at the deadline and load up for the future. The aging Sonny Gray and the fragile Matthew Liberatore are the only pitchers worth keeping. Walker, Scott and Winn are probably safe and perhaps Herrera, Donovan, Nootbaar and Burleson too.

Once again starting pitching doomed us. Yeah Baker, the sweep could very well be a good thing in the long run as we should be well on the side of “sell” now.

I think Helsley will at least command a decent return. The Arenado-to-the-Yankees rumor might have some truth to it. Would anyone take a chance on Matz? Could be. Same with Pallante. We are probably stuck with the other two stooges (Mikolas and Fedde). They likely have zero value in the trade market. We might be able to dump one in a deal where we move on from Helsley and tell the buyer they have to take Mikolas to close the deal. But they won’t be around next year anyway, so it’s not that big of a deal if they are here through season’s end.

An afternoon family gathering prevented me from seeing a single pitch, but the box illustrates the precise same lousy routine….Spot the opponent 4 or 5 runs in the first inning and it’s game over practically as soon as the contest gets underway. I also see Mikolas got roughed up for 2 taters and a triple while allowing 5 ER’s in the blink of an eye. The carnage could get really gruesome if they don’t get a decent turn from the rotation. Right now, it doesn’t look like that may ever happen.
