I don’t have an issue with a guy having a preference of where he wants to play. It certainly does not make him a “head case”. That is what Curt Flood said 50+ years ago when he sued MLB. He did not want to go to Philadelphia and felt he should have some say in that.
I recently passed up a contract opportunity that paid well , but is located north of downtown Denver, and I live south of the metro area. They would not agree to me working remote so I said “thanks but no thanks”. Does that make me a head case because I can’t be happy making good money and commuting 2-2 1/2 hours a day? No, it’s just not my preference right now.
We could look at Arenado’s declining the Astros deal this way – “I have four years in St. Louis and would rather stick with the Cardinals and see what we can do than go to Houston.”
I think it is entirely appropriate and Karmatic (if that is a word) that the organization is being forced to field and pay for the precise type of team they have been betting on for years. The spirit inside the team simply won’t tank in the manner that truly benefits the team most.
Who else should Mo be trading for prospects?
Pretty much anyone not named Winn IMO.
I know this team isn’t amazing and should be trading off 1 year left types, but they are not even close to bad enough to sell off everything that isn’t bolted down. You do that if your team is looking at 100 loss seasons and you see your contention window as 5+ years down the road. There are enough viable pieces that will be around in 26, 27 that the team should be able to compete for the NL Central title. Even now the Cards are projected as around .500 or a game or few games below and could be in the hunt.
I would actually argue selling off that hard would just make things drastically worse. I love prospects and get excited for them as it is part of being a fan, but I will admit even the best fail more than they succeed (not just a Cards thing but true of all teams). Someone like Donovan is worth a good amount and I am keeping him around rather than trading him and hoping and dreaming on a 33% chance one of the players in return for him ends up as productive as he is 5+ years from now.
Mo and Bill have traded away arb players non-stop, so current arbs Helsley, JoJo, King, Donny, Noot and Pallante types can see their fate. Will that change now since Bill is resetting the financials? If not, we are the Pirates feeding mlb with any talent we accumulate.

PNC park is beautiful. Put a competitive club on the field and the bucs fans do show up. Sell everyone off and look at their gate.
Bill has already passed on that approach. He’s smart enough to know he can’t ignore that gate.If every single thing goes exactly right for the Cardinals this year from no impactful injuries to breakout years for every prospect to comeback years for Gorman / Walker/ Nootbar / Arenado / Mikolas / Matz – then the Cardinals can win the World Series.
In my experience however; when you get past 3 ‘ifs’ – it ain’t happening.
Sounds like your “couple years” to reset has ballooned to 4yrs minimum GS.
It is difficult to live in a world of hypotheticals but if another team called making a ridiculous offer for one of our so called untouchables I would listen.

Whatever it takes to unlock the Bregman market. Surely the “mystery buyer” is on deck as the next leverage play.

I wouldn’t give him the Paul DeJong extension yet but I also wouldn’t trade him unless blown away by an offer.
As for Nado I really believe that if Bregman ever signs with the Astros, Tigers, Blue Jays or Cubs then the Red Sox will circle back for Nado and a deal will get done.
If Bregman signs with the Red Sox then we may be stuck with Nado until July.
That’s the way I see it G. At this point it looks like we get more if we wait until td. But frankly is it worth hearing about it until August?

Not sure but it was also reported on the MLB Network last night.
I hope we keep him myself.
I am anticipating a .285/30/100 year from him and playoff contention.

This sounds like more credible reporting than most of it.
There was a report this morning that Arenado is in Cardinals camp. That was erroneous. (But he is not late.)
This definitely sounds like a deal where the Cardinals will not be sending a lot of cash over to Boston.
Unless there’s more to this trade, this is just a salary dump. Blaze Jordan has been in the Red Sox organization for 4 years and he’s still at AA.A best-for-all-concerned deal would be sending Nado to the Dodgers for Bobby Miller. Miller is probably about the 8th starter for them, but would be a nice addition to our club. The Cards and Bums need to make that happen.
