Different from some on the market, he has pedigree.

    2019 – 5th in CYA voting
    2020 – 6th in CYA voting
2021 – All Star, 3rd in CYA voting
    2022 – 3.99 ERA, 1.134 WHIP
2023 – Rough season between White Sox and Dodgers, but still Ked 191 in 183 2/3 innings.

Good move to slot in at #4-#5 on only a 1 year contract.
Hope he comes to ST with reduced weight and in good shape.
He may be pumped up and on a mission.

Well bccran, I agree with what you said if he’s slotted correctly. I’m not sure he makes us better but he doesn’t make us worse.

“Hope” didn’t carry the rotation last season.

This one does not move the needle for me.

He’s 36 and on the downhill side of his career.

    13-11 183 2/3 innings ERA 5.73 ERA 1.4 WHIP.

they better sign yamamoto after this then….surely they learned their lesson about having a bunch of #4-5 starters last year

Ugh. When I read this I was in a bit of disbelief. Especially if we only get 1 other starter and a swing man. This feels like a small overpay for what Lynn is today, which is probably why he signed early. I hope the plan now is for Lynn to be our #5 and we still have 2 good targets left. Otherwise, I hate this signing.

Crossing my fingers we sign 2 of Gray, Imanaga, or Yamamoto. If that happens, then I’ll be far happier with the Lance Lynn budget saving move.

Lance Lynn fastball velocity and ERA, 2021-2023 (velocity from Fangraphs):

    2021 94.0 MPH, 2.69 ERA
    2022 93.0 and 3.99
    2023 92.6 and 5.73

Not a good trend. Not good at all. And he’s 35 with a physique slightly svelter than Bret Bielema.

It’s probably better than even money that Lance is simply washed up. (His fastball was also 94.2 – 94.7 in 2019/20, so the decline is part of an ongoing trend in his 30’s.)

This is the kind of move you make — for, say, 4 or 5 million bucks at most — to boost an 82-84 win team by a game or two. It’s not one of the “big offseason acquisitions” for a team trying to climb from worst to first.

It’s a largely pointless move, a lateral move, to me. And if the next signing is anyone other than Yoshi Yamamoto, 2024 is over before it starts.

I’d seen the reference plan to 2.5 starters having the .5 as someone who might only make 20 starts, but who would have high impact in those starts. If the 2.5 were, say, Yamamoto, Lynn, and the .5, any ideas on who the .5 might be? Lynn seems more like a back end inning eater.

7 years in the NL 79 wins 49 losses 3.44 ERA

Last 5 years 54 wins 38 losses. Could be solid and worth a shot for $10 million.

Regardless of role (SP#5 – SP#6 – LongR), how much better will Lynn be than Dakota Hudson in 2024?
Wasn’t it better to save those 6 million?

Yes, they should’ve just saved the $7 million ($1 million buyout)

No, they are seeing Milwaukee tear down to the studs, and they’ve decided they don’t need to win 90 wins to win the Central. If they are a .500 club, they will be “competing” for the playoffs.

Lynn is fine as a number four starter. He did amass over 180 innings last year and we defintiely need an innings eater. He will better than 2023 Waino. I think we all agree that Waino is a Cardinal legend and will wear a red jacket one day but let’s not underestimate just how bad his 2023 season was. 7.40 ERA, .345 BA against, and a 1.90 WHIP. Anyone else would have been released.

Now if Mo is thinking Lynn is one of his “big two” acquisitions then we are in trouble. We still need two out of the group of Yamamoto, Montgomery, Gray, Bieber, Cease, etc….

Key moves also need to be made in the pen. Would be happy if they bring back Hicks. They need another flame thrower on the back end.

I am not worried about the Brewers but I think we might be about 20 games worse than the Cubs. I don’t think they hired Counsell in order to be passive this offseason. They are in win now mode and will make big additions.

The problem with Lynn is that he is fastball reliant. Usually, when pitchers get old and start losing velocity on their fastball, they turn to off-speed pitches to survive.

The problem with Lynn is that he has never had an off-speed pitch. He has two variations of a fastball.

If Mo is going for guys on short term deals who have something to prove after a poor 2023 season, Alek Manoah should be at
the top of the list. Blue Jays are shopping him and the Cards seem to have a good rapport with the Jays front office.

Has anyone noticed we cleared out two starters Marmol seemed to dislike because of their personalities (Woodford and Hudson)replaced the world’s nicest guy (Waino) with a surly bastard? We got rid of the catcher known for his smile and caring attitude.
This has been about altering the team beyond sabermetrics.
The young starters are all ready to step up. They have grown over the last two seasons quite a bit. Go back and look at Glavine or most other great starters’s first three years; you will see that struggling and growth are key elements of long-term success.

Meh…he won’t hurt and he can only help on a flyer piece for a contender at the deadline. But having said that, welcome home for a little while Lance Lynn.

I really like the one year deal. Hoping Mo finds another starter or two on short terms deals, as we see how Thompson,
Liberatore, McGreevy, Graceffo, Hence, Kloffenstein, Roby, Robberse, Rom, Hjerpe, Hansen, Rajcic, etc. develop.

    Maybe Wacha?

How does that get us out of last place? It is time to move the needle.

Bob Reeds points about his numbers declining should worry all. When things start declining, they go fast. Kudos to him though for getting 10 million plus I guess a team option for 2025. Maybe it will incentivize him, though I’m not sure the dollar amount for second year

The way I see it, the rotation now is Mikolas and Lynn. (I am not counting on anything from Matz based on what he’s done for the Cardinals so far.) One of Liberatore or Thompson can fill a rotation spot for, at least, awhile. We still need a top of rotation guy. And we need one or two of Bieber, Glasnow, Manoah, etc.

Sonny Gray, no doubt, wants 3 years, and then we have to give the Twins a draft pick that may produce a better player than Gray ever was. I hope they don’t bring Sonny Gray to St. Louis.

If McGreevey and Graceffo both improve over the offseason, they should be ready to get some major league experience at some point in 2024.

The one thing that bothers me the most about getting stunk out of the pitching auctions is that 2024 could be Goldschmidt’s last year in St. Louis.

As I recall, Lynn thought he was a $20M per year pitcher when he left, but only banked $12M. Now he’s older and slower and at $10M, down from $18M w/LA for a year. With inflation, maybe that’s a good deal for a one year gap filler, but it’s still risky. Older veteran pitcher acquisitions never seem to work well for us, and this one doesn’t seem to move the needle much. Lynn has been overrated his whole career IMHO.
