I just read an article saying the Cardinals should sign Max on a 1 year deal for next season.
October 2, 2026 at 2:09 pm #320158If they need a veteran presence in the Rotation and actually want to spend some money I’d rather go after Gausman, he would probably cost more than Scherzer at this point but he can eat up some innings and pitch pretty effectively; though he was a little shaky in his stint with the Cubs after the trade…..which was kind of good to see.
But I don’t see DeWitt shaking lose a dime this off season so it probably is not happening.
October 2, 2026 at 4:06 pm #320162Articles have floated around StL. saying that they should sign Max ever since the Cardinals chose him in the ’03 amatuer draft when he was straight out of Parkway Central HS in StL. Co.
October 2, 2026 at 4:55 pm #320164Probably dusted off his old article and just did a replace of Buehrle with Scherzer. 😉
October 2, 2026 at 6:04 pm #320168It would be a fitting end to Max’ career to come here for a year. And he might be a good one to help mentor the young guys – almost a pitcher/coach. But yeah, I don’t thiink the Cardinals will be interested unless it is an extremely team friendly deal where Max feels the value of finishing up his career in his hometown area is worth more than the cash he might get from someone else.
October 2, 2026 at 7:20 pm #320175Unfortunately he’s toast. No better than Miles Mikolas.
October 2, 2026 at 7:43 pm #320176As far as production I doubt Max would help much, but he could earn his salary in more of a mentorship role. Again, it would have to be almost a minimum wage deal with incentives. But I thought Pujols was done when he came back and he ended up having a great final campaign.
October 2, 2026 at 8:10 pm #320177The Cardinals had a decent chance to lure Scherzer to StL. when he was still one of the most dominant SP’ers in baseball and they passed on that opportunity. I also feel they had a chance to sign Chris Sale when he was available at a reasonable price when he left BOS and, again, they sat still and didn’t make any genuine attempt to add a first rate SP’er. They also could have taken a chance on Michael Wacha who, BTW, led the AL with over 200 IP’ed this season. I think Wacha would have been elated to return to the Cardinals had they demonstrated a genuine interest with some sort of offer. Scared money never wins anything except Mike Leake, Miles Mikolas and an occasional Jake Westbrook who, incidentally, I happened to like. In any event, Willie Jr. has fully demonstrated to me that he simply doesn’t possess the sort of stomach required to endure even a nominal roll of the dice type risk if he’s required to dig a bit deep into his pocket.
