Gyorko could have been brought up on manslaughter charges if Rodriquez doesn’t evade that scorcher right back at him and out into center for a hit….and mow the 6-4-3 twin killing will extinguish the Redbird threat here in the top of the 4th….still tied st a run apiece.
Have very fond memories of PD. The Cleveland Plain Dealer was/is the finest newspaper in our great land. Cranny’s PD isn’t too shabby either. I have a feeling that we will find DeJong to be a new man when it comes to decreasing his whiffs at the dish. Sometimes that’s all a guy needs is too have a month or so off to clear his head and work out a remedy for what ails him in his chosen profession. I bet his K rate will be way down from here on in. God willing, I’ll be on hand for this evening’s game thread. I have been embroiled in a work project these past few weeks and have missed our threads.
Very nicely dealt effort indeed by Weaver. 93 pitches thru 8 complete innings! He usually logs that many heaves with only 6 innings of labor. At the risk of sounding like a Davie Downer, the early offensive outburst certainly made Weaver’s life much easier last evening. Let’s see how efficient he’s going to be from this point on in tight games. Have my fingers crossed.
Indeed, stlcard25. I thought he looked pretty solid the first month of the season, but it seems like it’s been a slow but sure decline since then. I wonder if Weaver isn’t better suited for the pen at this level?
You either want your players to all love each other……or dislike each other. Anything in between and the door is wide open for dissention and cliques. Give me a talented squad of players, who to a man, hate the ground their fellow players walk on, and I’ll show you a team ripe to do great things. It’s a thing of beautiful to see 25 grown men playing ball, doing everything in their power to not only beat the brains out of their opponents, but also out-do their despised teammates. As a manager, you get double the bang for your buck with this not often witnessed scenario. What do you think spring training is for? It’s not only to groom and judge talent, but also for the manager to decide which type of team he has to mold and how exactly he is going to accomplish it.
Looking at Jose Oquendo…. say he one day becomes our skipper and delivers us a World Series champion or two. Then stays on with the team after his managerial days conclude well into his 90’s. Is he revered by Cardinal fans to the same degree as Red?
Now Lamb singles to center to plate another tally…2-0.
Sloppy sloppy defensive play once again…..which is not surprising. But what is shocking is Arizona being fearful of Ozuna’s arm in left….AZ scores anyway on the errant throw to 2nd. 1-0 DBacks.
Bader REALLY has his act together defensively!
If I was Martinez, I may have leaned a little further to my left in the vicinity of that halter topped lovely vs going after the ball on that fruitless attempt to snag that foul ball in the stands.
Just checking to see if my earlier supposition regarding the correlation of age and the era of our favorite Cardinal teams held merit. Are you between age 13-28, Cardinals27?
I think all 4 that you mention need to find new homes, Cranny. That would be fantastic if we need only click on a link to reveal what the front office was or was not going to do. If the uninspiring mediocre play continues, I don’t see how MM doesn’t get his pink slip soon. Well let’s hope this is a moot point and our Birds start flying high once again.
Unfortunately, 1964 was a titch before my time, as what a season that must of been! I think as we look back, our favorite Cardinal team probably corresponded with the happiest times of our lives. So for the majority of us, that was between ages 6-21. My favorite team was the ’82 version…..with vivid visions of Willie McGee in the WS still as crystal clear on my mind as it was in 1990.
MM is most certainly on the ropes and looking like he might hit the mat at any moment. I really thought he was going to be shown the door last Sunday night. Obviously the players know of their skipper’s precariousness as well and will respond accordingly on the field of play. If the team continues in an uninspiring manner, how could MM not be fired soon???? At this point, my crystal ball has a guy named Manny coming to town and a guy named Mike exiting it. With this being said, I want MM to keep his job…..I want to see his players step up to the plate to make this happen.
He most certainly can….but he and his never ending river of K’s aren’t there quite yet. But if DeJong were a stock commodity…… I’d be a buying!
I like your thinking, Cranny! Wong is just wrong and Schrock is the rock! And my sincere condolences to you and your collegiate squad, GScott!! I was really rooting for them. I still don’t believe that foul ball off 1st base that wasn’t caught….but I don’t even know if one particular professional 1st baseman I know of, would have corralled that ball.
Remember how excited you were with the news of Scott Rolen becoming a Cardinal? For me, multiply that elation by 5 if Machado were to head our way. But only if we can lock him up for at least 5 years. To be a serious contender you have to have at least a couple 5-star players. The only position player we have resembling that distinction is an aging Yadier Molina. This team is presently full to the gills with 2 and 3 star players. This team and it’s fans are thirsting for a marquee player. Having one around makes other players around them better….just as having poor players ( cough cough….Dexter ) has the opposite effect. Let’s get back on the winning trail….Machado can do that for us.
One would think that this would be MM’s last game as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals. Not to say that this sinking ship is all of his fault. If he’s still gainfully employed at 9:00pm this evening, I’ll be absolutely shocked.
Mikolas will be absolute money tonight. Pham deserves to bat in Wong land. Matter of fact if I was MM, I would skip the #8 slot on my batting lineup card and hit Pham #9 and Wong #9A. A few interesting tidbits on this date, June 29th, in baseball:
1916 – The Reds and cubs played a 9 inning affair…..with just one baseball. Just goes to show how far societal manners have tappered off over the past 100 years. Now days Wrigley fans only throw balls back on to the field of play after an opposing player hits a dinger. 100 years ago they were chasing home run balls from their own team, down Waveland and Sheffield avenues, incorporating a fan relay system to get the ball back to the pitcher as soon as possible so to keep the game flowing.
1923 – “Brooklyn’s Jacques Fournier went 6-6 with a home run, two doubles and three singles as the Dodgers beat the Philadelphia Phillies 14-5”. I think it’s pretty safe to say that Jacques Fournier and Dexter Fowler share no branches on their respective family trees.
1937 – “Chicago cubs first baseman Rip Collins played the entire game without a putout or an assist”. An absolute dream game for we Cardinal fans with Jose Martinez being our 1st baseman.
1968 – “Detroit’s Jim Northrup hit his third grand slam in a week as the Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox 5-2”. I’m trying to think…. have we hit a granny yet this year?
I too enjoyed stlcard25’s Wilford Brimley reference, Nyquist. Though Tony (Wilford was his middle name) never made it to the bigs, he supposedly was a fair little player. One can easily picture Brimley as a lumbering lug with a lot of power, but little else to offer. But actually he was very fleet of foot and kind of a punch & Judy type hitter with little pop. His sports claim to fame was being called “an intriguing talent” by a Phillies scout who attended his high school game in Utah, not to see him, but another player. He dropped out of high school the next year to join the Marines. Then later he worked as a bodyguard for none other than Howard Hughes. Anthony Wilford Brimley……who knows just how good he could have become had he not ditched school for the Marines????
Funny comment about the weather delay, 2011Seems!! Yep, what a birthday present for you, 2011Seems!! If we could have a weather delay every game plus celebrate 2011Seems’ birthday every game plus have Dexter wearing a different uni color than red every game….we’d go 161-1….nobody is perfect.
Right you are, stlcard25. I think to a man, we all here knew Kluber was going to get royally klubbed tonight. This Redbird team is sizzzzling hot!! Just get DeJong and Wacha back…and Schrock up, and WS-2018 here we come! Think about our competition for the NL flag this year….its pretty darn soft, unlike over in the AL.
I think Wong’s time has truly come and unfortunately warrants departure. Schrock deserves a chance. We know he can field….that can be determined whether he’s playing in St. Lucie or St. Louis. Hitting is the big question mark. Let’s see how he can hit in the bigs. He certainly can’t do any worse than Wong. We very well may be pleasantly surprised.
10-4….copy that Good buddy. Ears on and powering up for some good action at the ole’ pickle park. Negatory on the Tribe having any chance of hammering Carlos tonight. Out!
Happy 46th, 2011Seems!! I think I speak for all in saying it’s been a delight to have you onboard with us. Kluber or no Kluber, I don’t know how our boys could let you down tonight.
