Why can’t DeJong be a 5 star player? Second in the ROY voting. Hit at a high 30s HR pace his first partial season in the majors.
I think DeJong could end up being a 5-star player but he can play SS or 3B, giving us the opportunity to add another upgrade on the left side of the infield.
He most certainly can….but he and his never ending river of K’s aren’t there quite yet. But if DeJong were a stock commodity…… I’d be a buying!
Machado has hit a HR every 17 PAs this season. In DeJong’s short MLB career, he has hit a home run every 18 PAs. At AAA, O’Neill has hit a HR every 15 PAs.
One good thing about Machado is that he doesn’t strike out quite as much as others. I believe his career strikeout rate is around 18%.
Could St. Louis win him over and he want to resign with us, sort of like McGwire?

The Cards would have to pretty much have an extension in place before a trade, because it will be very expeive in players going the other way.
Why would Machado agree to an extension now? It is not impossible, but so close to it, it is not worth seriously discussing, IMO.
Trading for him with a blind hope of winning him over has a high risk of failure. Remember that because it will be a mid-season trade, his new team won’t even get a comp draft pick when he walks. High, high risk.

I believe there is almost zero chance that would happen. The old days of bring them in during the season, win them over with the BFIB, and re-sign them in the offseason are over. We aren’t a destination point any longer.
DeWitt would have to be willing to write a $350M-$400M check for us to have a chance. Not likely.
Then it’s not even worth discussing the possibility of trading for him, BW. The price of the rental would be way too high. Case would appear to be closed.
Would hate to give up a single good prospect for a half year of Machado since we don’t look to be a serious contender for a deep run this year. His past performance has not come close to justifying the ridiculous numbers projected for his future contract. Reminds me of the NBA and draft/sign on potential. Maybe last year’s free agent market is the start of bringing some sanity back into play.
These short term rentals which require too much going the other way fly in the face of building from within. If it’s a 2 year rental like Ozuna, that’s a bit of a different story.
I don’t see why we’d be in on him right now. Unless we are willing to pay him whatever it takes to stay in StL long term.
If we did that. Probably overpaying a lot to beat out the big spenders. I could see dropping a good prospect or two to the Os.
But if you’re not willing to write a blank check then you can’t drop big prospects for a rental.
The Baltimore paper says seven teams have made offers for Machado and he could be traded as soon as this weekend.

Interesting the Cardinals are not listed as making an offer. I don’t know that they trade him this quickly. I’d suspect that article is to assist in spurring more serious discussions and maybe to drive other teams and better offers.
I missed this item earlier today. The Brewers did it with Sabathia exactly a decade ago, and it got them into the playoffs.

It wouldn’t bother me to see the Brewers get Machado. It would weaken their farm system further plus if we can’t win the division I would rather see someone other than the stinking Cubs win it.
Same here. If the Cardinals can’t get him, then I hope the Brew Crew gets him. The Cardinals can challenge the Cubs for a wild card. (I still think the Cardinals are a much better team than they’ve shown so far.)

Im not sure anyone, even with MAchado, in the NL can beat the 3 big boys in the AL and Seattle is looking pretty good too.
So, i am more concerned with where he goes in the offseason as it has more effect long term. Having said that, i think id prefer LA or PHI getting him because i think the Cardinals this year still have an honest shot at a playoff spot, and maybe even the division…add MAchado into the BRews and Im not sure i liek those chances
I honestly have been perplexed why the BRewers have been in on him, sure they could use a SS and bat help from the MI but there are other options that coudl come cheaper…
i feel they should be moving for Hamels or Archer to make them a legit contender, having a struggling middle infield with the bat is not as big a deal if you have the thump in the other positions like they have
If i were the Brewers id trade for Archer…and then trade for LuCroy and Lowrie from the A’s…then stick Arcia at SS and not care about his bat and just live on his glove
-Archer for Domingo Santana is nice and clean and the Rays coudl use better outfield and thump
-Lowrie and LuCroy wont cost TOO much..just dont trade Hiura in the deal
