9:10 p.m. RHP Miles Mikolas (8-3, 2.61) vs. LHP Patrick Corbin (6-3, 3.14) FOX Sports Midwest/ ESPN/KMOX
St. Louis heads into this contest 6 1/2 back of the division lead, and only 7 up on last place Cincinnati. It will be quite a jolt if (when?) that number flips and we are closer to last than first.
You just gotta hope something clicks with this club, and they pull it together. The bullpen might be coming together, although we will just have to see.
The offense should be better, as DeJong will hopefully be healthy the second half, and you would think Pham, Ozuna, Wong and Gyorko all will be better over the final three months.
Kind of looks like the 1964 team. A bunch of guys playing below their capability on offense, and a shaky bullpen. Then in the second half guys started to put it together at the plate, and we called up an old knuckle-baller who stabilized the ‘pen. Not too mention a young outfielder with a terrific arm to take over in right field. That guy still makes his voice heard around Cardinal Nation.
Nice recall except Maddon or Craig Counsell are unlikely to pull a Gene Mauch and wear out their pitching staffs.Mauch literally wore out Bunning,Chris Short and Dennis Bennett.
The ’64 Cards is my favorite team ever. {7-4-64} 10.0 games out-6th pace. I was kind of used to the Cards being where they were in the standings. The All-Star game that season featured the starting infield of White-1B Javier-2B Groat-SS and Boyer-3B. Sadecki won 20 and Gibson 19.
The Cards passed the Phillies in the last week of the season and went on to beat the Yanks in the WS, 4 games to 3. It was wonderful to be a Cards fan during the 60’s, starting in ’64.
1964 was when the Cards heisted Lou Brock from the Cubbies for Ernie Broglio……I remember hearing that on the radio( after dark) and thinking the Cards really screwed themselves because Broglio had been so good and Brock was a struggling young player.Of course back in those days unless the Cards were on TV on Saturday game of the week(Peewee and Dizzy) i had to listen on my transister radio after dark to hear the Cards play unless Cards were playing the damned Reds..then you had to listen to the Reds announcers until dark and then swtitch to KMOX.
The summer between my junior and senior year in HS, Ernie was 21-9 and had an ERA of 2.74. The season before he was traded, he was 18-8, a 2.99 ERA.
I was very disappointed with the trade at the time.
He was my favorite pitcher on the Cards staff.
Just shows to go ya.I remember looking at my baseball cards (my brother and me collected them back then.Cost 5 cents a pack.).My brother and I both wondered what was so special about Brock that the Cards would trade Brogilio?I was a Stan The Man fan and after he retired I thought Charley James would be okay in the OF.Did not think CJames would be a star but I thought he would be okay.Boy I missed the boat on that.I always thought CJames would have done okay if given more time.The pressure of taking Stans place was too much.
Unfortunately, 1964 was a titch before my time, as what a season that must of been! I think as we look back, our favorite Cardinal team probably corresponded with the happiest times of our lives. So for the majority of us, that was between ages 6-21. My favorite team was the ’82 version…..with vivid visions of Willie McGee in the WS still as crystal clear on my mind as it was in 1990.

Oh Lord, Martinez back at 1stbase. He may as well shut his eyes when he tries to catch the baseball. He has about as much chance that way.

He’s not going to sit on the bench and his OF defense isn’t so great that you leave him here especially when you have 4guys already rotating in the OF.
Unfortunately the team makeup and performances are forcing Matheny to constantly shift people around to mix and match a usable lineup everyday that still keeps guys rotating in to still get Pt enough to work through problems.
If you have strugglers like Pham and Wong and Fowler on your team. Guys that have shown they can be very good everyday players. Sticking them on the bench forever isn’t going to fix them. And if they’re still in the team part of your job as manager is finding ways to get guys back to their norms and up to their expectations. It worked for Carp and is slowly getting there for Ozuna.
Plus we’ve seen that Fowler and Pham are starting to get less leash as they aren’t figuring it out quick enough. Especially Fowler. Wong’s great defense has shown up by him getting more time in hopes he can get the ABs tobgwt baxk I track. Slowly he seems to be figuring out.
Pham has the tools. His eyes may be having a bad year or pitchers get him now. But he isn’t far off. Feels more like Ozuna early and even as of late . Pressing too much to try to solve all the problems of the team in one at bat
A few more stable pieces I think is all the team and the players need. I think DeJong returning will help a lot. Just because they know where he will play and it is one more solid batter to take off the pressure from everyone a little. If we could do that or get that with one more position I think the whole team would settle down.
Nevertheless. We can win this series tonight despite all the problems and angst. And a win against a division leader at their place is important.
This team is not as bad as everyone seems to want it to be by how they act and write. It also is far from being good. We expect winners every night but reality is that the NL is wide open and the Cardinals have played good teams well within and outside the division. No one is dominating. If we can just get healthy and add a piece or two I think we’ve got just as much a shot as anyone else.
Leadoff double for Carpenter, followed by groundout, K, K. Such is why this team is struggling to stay afloat. They must be among the worst in the majors with RISP.

The schedule doesn’t revolve around yours or mine. It’s a fireworks promotion tonight. Plus they had to get a draw because half of Phoenix is in California this week. It appears it worked because it’s a sellout.
I don’t piss and moan when they games start at 4pm my time. That’s just the way it works.
Just checking to see if my earlier supposition regarding the correlation of age and the era of our favorite Cardinal teams held merit. Are you between age 13-28, Cardinals27?
If I was Martinez, I may have leaned a little further to my left in the vicinity of that halter topped lovely vs going after the ball on that fruitless attempt to snag that foul ball in the stands.
Sloppy sloppy defensive play once again…..which is not surprising. But what is shocking is Arizona being fearful of Ozuna’s arm in left….AZ scores anyway on the errant throw to 2nd. 1-0 DBacks.
