Cy Tidwell exits with 2 outs and Saggese on base here in the Cardinal 7th in an 8-2 San Francisco ballgame.
Only 10 games left in the regular season. These 162 games whizzed by so fast…..time…..time is going so darn fast. Back in grade school a summer went by at a snails pace, almost seemed like an eternity. Now with these days clicking by so rapidly it makes me feel like my goose is pretty much cooked. Well we’ll make the best of our remaining days good ones regardless.
Well these Giants hit us with 6 runs in the 8th inning in their park last week to pull one out of the fire. There’s no reason why we can’t return the favor in our park next inning(8th).
This Eldridge fellow, though whiffing in this at bat, has a real nice swing. He should be around this game for awhile. Mautz with a perfect 6th, K’ing two.
Post Home Run Derby, Walker’s offensive stats have to be somewhat reminiscent of pre-2026……..or at least it seems so.
There you have it…….the latest stellar weather report from our crack meteorologist. Thanks Rat! I sensed from Rat’s previous report that trouble could be a brewing on the storm front for tonight’s game, even though local meteorologists and Dopplar radar gave no indication of weather disturbances. Have a great jog, Rat, while you leave all of those 20 and 30 year old joggers in the dust.
I’m into triples too, TD. Kind of amazing that our Stan Musial(177) had more 3 baggers than the likes of Pete Rose (135), Willie Mays (141), Lou Brock (141) and Timmy Raines (113). One would never think that Babe Ruth amassed 136 lifetime triples, but no shock whatsoever seeing the great Ty Cobb with 295. But the all-time king of 3 base futility was Johnny Estrada who retired in 2008, registering 2,244 plate appearances……but never hitting a triple.
With all of the tumultuous weather swirling about, if we ever needed one of Rat’s first rate meteorological reports, it’s for tonight’s game. I’m trying to make plans for this evening, but find myself in a total standstill until Rat’s weather report.
If Rat says there will be tons of that dreaded “green stuff” near the ballpark tonight, then I’ll be taking a little road trip on up to the Wisconsin Dells to have din-din at the Del-Bar. If Rat signals that they’ll be baseball tonight, then I’ll take the short trip on over to Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse for din-din.

1901 – The Chicago White Sox hit a MLB record 5 triples in the 8th inning of a 9-4 drubbing over Milwaukee in the second game of a twin bill.
1914 – Cleveland star Nap Lajoie becomes the 3rd member of the 3000 hit club, hitting a single off Detroit hurler Pug Cavet in a 2-1 loss to the Tigers.
1922 – Butch Henline of the Philadelphia Phillies becomes the first NL player of the century to whack 3 homers in a game, accomplishing the feat in a 10-9 triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals.
1946 – The Brooklyn Dodgers and Chicago cubs see their game postponed in the 5th inning due to a swarm of gnats invading Ebbets Field. Brooklyn was leading 2-0 at the time.
1950 – Johnny Mize drilled 3 home runs in a game for a record 6th time in the Yankees 9-7 defeat at the hands of Detroit’s Tigers.
1961 – The New York Yankees swat their 222nd round tripper, establishing a new ML record. The Yanks go on that day to split their doubleheader with Detroit.
1969 – Steve Carlton of St. Louis posts a record 19 strike outs, but is outdueled by Gary Gentry and Tug McGraw, as the Cardinals fall 4-3 to the New York Mets.
1978 – Phil Garner hits his second grand slam in 2 days, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates past the Montreal Expos 6-1. Garner is the first NL player since 1901 to hit grand slams in back-to-back games.
1987 – Keith Hernandez records hit number 2000 in the New York Mets 12-4 trouncing of the Chicago cubs.

Seymour on for the Giants in the bottom of the 8th……and I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing more runs tacked on to the Cardinal slim advantage.
Stanek surrenders a base hit and free pass after whiffing the first 2 Giants in the crucial 8th inning…..let’s stay with the action shall we?
Hill on 3-2 lines a laser that’s speared by Gorman at 3rd……whew! I think Matthews may have just expelled the biggest sigh of relief in the house on that one.

Redbirds don’t scoreboard in the 7th. Cards still lead 2-1 as Stanek trots out to the hill to pitch the 8th.Bruihl center stage for St. Louis facing McCray……..McCray grounds out to short and this Bruihl fellow has been sneaky good this past month. Now let’s tack on some insurance tallies and get this kud rookie a big fat “W”.
Matthews temporarily escapes a 1 out runners on 2nd & 3rd pickle here in the 7th by inducing a short fly to right where the Giants smartly opted not to test Walker’s cannon of an arm, but then walks the next batter to load them up……and Matthews night is a wrap as he’s exiting this ballgame….very nice job by the young Redbird.
They sure are, Bling. Matthews gives up a little squibber along the 3rd baseline that Gorman has to put in his hip pocket to begin the 7th. I hope that doesn’t mentally screw up Matthews….we’ll find out quick enough.
Yes, Joe……thanks Jnevel. Thinking about all of these brother pitching combos from the 70’s and 80’s……you just don’t see ML brothers pitching any longer. A bunch 40 years ago with the likes of the Perry’s, Niekro’s, Reuschel’s and Forsch’s.
Just did a little reading on the topic and Bob Forsch tossed 2 no-no’s(1978 & 1983) for us. The Cards have pitched a total of 10 no hitters, but no perfect games. Bob’s brother Ken pitched a no-no for Houston. I would guess no brothers have equalled that feat. Off the top of my head, I believe one of the Reuschel brothers tossed one for the cubbies…. .probably Rick and not Paul……I think Phil Niekro hurled one, but not his brother who’s first name presently eludes me…….the Perry brothers? I bet Gaylord tossed one, but not Jim…….what other brothers?…..oh Daffy tossed one for us, but not Dizzy……you’d think it would be the other way around.
No-no still intact through 5. Trying to think who tossed our last gem? Bobby Forsch maybe? And our last perfect game probably dates back 100 years.
Big time Packers fan, Albert. I echo Scotty’s post the other day when he said something along the lines of “if the cubbies were playing the Russians, coached by Vladimir Putin, I’d be rooting like heck for the Rooskies”. I would definitely add both the Bears and ViQueens to that equation. That 4th quarter in Minneapolis yesterday was the most nightmarish quarter of football I’ve experienced. I had Vikes fans to the right of me…….to the left of me……in back of me…..and in front of me……and boy did they rub it in …….hopefully the football Gods will get them but good for their mocking ways.
Those were some pretty sweet 1960’s football cards, TD. Hopefully you keep them out of your purple Stingray’s bike spokes and in pristine condition.
