ParticipantThe way this team is playing, is 89 Ws realistic?
If Matheny has players that are making good money and batting sub-.200 in mid-June that he has to play, FO is to blame. Fowler and Wong contribute very little offensively (at least Wong’s glove is a plus). Carpenter and Ozuna have climbed out of their funks, Dex and Kolt continue to be a drag on the team. You can’t win 89 games with two important cogs not showing up. Especially with your #3 hitter and SS on the DL.
June 18, 2018 at 10:43 am #56942how about Yanks deal us Andujar for Wacha?
then sell Sheffield and something else for Machado? Then go all in on re-signing him after they get their WS win?Sounds like a Yankees plan to me

June 28, 2018 at 10:01 pm #58451Heyman’s latest update mentions four teams, none of which are the Cards – but the Cubs are.

June 29, 2018 at 8:13 am #58459They might have to make some other trades, but it is not out of the realm of possibility.

ParticipantBob Nightengale of USA has the Dodgers getting Machado.
If the Cards have to trade for Machado to fill the power spot that we got Ozuna to fill, it will call for another set of prospects sent packing. So for the cost of a rental and the original set of prospects traded off to get Ozuna…. that’s a whole bunch of players that will be missing. If that becomes the case the Ozuna trade becomes even more of a bust. We got him to provide plenty of power, again we have to get someone to fill that spot.

stlcard25ParticipantI wouldn’t say the Ozuna trade is a bust as I’m still not sold on any of the guys we gave up being great.
The bigger issue for the offense this year has been the stretches where most everyone except Molina and Martinez have hit like A ball players for a month at a time. I guess Dejong hasn’t had an ice cold month but he has been injured.
Machado would be an impact bat, but I’m in agreement that the prospect price would be too high to stomach, IMO. I think they would want more than the Ozuna return, and for 1/4 of the time. No thanks.

ParticipantLike I said, we traded for a power guy for the 4 spot. Ozuna hasn’t been that guy. Having to go out and replace him as a big bat makes the Ozuna trade seem pretty costly. I give Ozuna plenty of credit for getting on track, but he is somewhat of a liability in left. I don’t know what happened to that gold glove caliber defense and arm.
June 29, 2018 at 9:19 am #58463
stlcard25ParticipantI wouldn’t see a trade for another bat as a replacement situation but rather a supplement. I still think Ozuna will hit around 25 HRs which isn’t his 2017 level but is OK. I’d never turn down a chance to add another good hitter if the price is fair, though.
Which of the guys that went to the Marlins are major losses, to you?
June 29, 2018 at 10:07 am #58469Ozuna will be fine, and I think he will end up with solid numbers this year. And as luck (bad) will have it, he most likely will have a monster year next year, and will then take his act elsewhere.
Management should not make a decision on Machado under the assumption that Ozuna is a bust. He has played 3 months as a Cardinal; way too short of a time to base a big decision on a short-term rental.
June 29, 2018 at 10:30 am #58475The Cubs could easily get Machado if they are willing to give up Russell and a top minor leaguer. That is a big if though. Their top minor league pitcher is out the rest of the season and that is a big trade chip they don’t have.
I don’t see the Cards going for Machado nor do I think they should if they have to gut the system. They should focus on run prevention.
I’m not sold on the fact the Dodgers are in on him. It just isn’t a Friedman type of move. I would think the Phillies would be the leaders in the clubhouse. A lot of their executives are former Orioles, they are in contention, and they have prospects and money to burn. Also, keep any eye on the Dbacks. They are desperate to hold off the Dodgers.
One AL team that should go after him is the Indians. There championship window is closing fast as they have several pending free agents and not a huge payroll capacity. This might be their last best chance to make a deep run.
June 29, 2018 at 10:44 am #58482Where would Manny play in Clev? They have pretty dang good 3B and SS…
June 29, 2018 at 10:57 am #58485Manny would play 3B, shift Ramirez to 2B, Kipnis to the bench.
June 29, 2018 at 11:08 am #58487Indians don’t need more hitting though they need bullpen and need It pretty bad
June 29, 2018 at 11:13 am #58488They could probably use one more reliever but if Miller and Allen come back healthy from the DL they will be fine. An IF consisting of Ramirez, Lindor, and Machado wouldn’t be too shabby going down the stretch.

ParticipantIt seems that the front-runners are never the winners… except for NYY and BOS.
July 4, 2018 at 10:54 am #59063bccran
ParticipantWhy isn’t DeJong considered a power bat? 38 home runs between St. Louis and Memphis in 2017.
July 4, 2018 at 12:53 pm #59081If we are truly a front runner for Machado I give the front office credit for being aggressive because I have criticized them in the past for being passive, however, this is one time where I don’t think we should be aggressive. Are we really one player away from being a serious contender? I don’t think so therefore it makes no sense to gut our farm system for a guy we have zero chance of re-signing.
Like I’ve said before I think it is time to consider selling and re-tooling. That is different than tanking by the way! With the right moves we could be competitive next year even if we sell.
Like the article in VEB said the other day, it is admirable that the Cards try to contend every year but once in awhile you need to take a step back and punt, re-group, re-tool, and come up with a different group. MLB’s system really isn’t designed for a team to be competitive every year so it is surprising we have done it for as long as we have. But when you draft every year in the middle of the pack, and sign middle of the pack FA’s, guess where you are going to end up in the standings? Middle of the pack!
It might be time to do something different. This fan base is sophisticated to understand it, I think.
July 4, 2018 at 1:35 pm #59086bccran
ParticipantNeed to eventually make room for O’Neill to see if he can cut down on his Ks and gain plate discipline. With DeJong, O’Neill, and Gorman (someday) we’ll have plenty of power in the middle of the lineup.
July 4, 2018 at 1:44 pm #59089I totally agree bccran!
July 4, 2018 at 1:55 pm #59090Remember how excited you were with the news of Scott Rolen becoming a Cardinal? For me, multiply that elation by 5 if Machado were to head our way. But only if we can lock him up for at least 5 years. To be a serious contender you have to have at least a couple 5-star players. The only position player we have resembling that distinction is an aging Yadier Molina. This team is presently full to the gills with 2 and 3 star players. This team and it’s fans are thirsting for a marquee player. Having one around makes other players around them better….just as having poor players ( cough cough….Dexter ) has the opposite effect. Let’s get back on the winning trail….Machado can do that for us.
July 4, 2018 at 2:18 pm #59093The problem is we have no chance of locking up Machado long term. I have no interest in giving away top talent to only have him for two months unless I thought it would lead to a deep playoff run this year, which it won’t.
