Well at the time Carpenter was the everyday third baseman against right-handed pitchers and Edman had to play right field if he was getting in the line-up. He played third when the pitcher was left-handed. There was a gradual process of removing Carpenter from the line-up. Whether Shildt waited too long to remove him is a matter of opinion. Mike Shildt probably would disagree with you.
In all fairness, most were fine with Edman playing – just not in the OF. The only reason Edman was in the outfield was that Shildt waited far too long to sit Carpenter.
That is not the only reason Edman was/is playing RF. It was primarily to get another left-handed bat in the line-up before Edman became the starter at 3B.
Shildt has been right and the whiny, complainers have been wrong. Mike Shildt=Manager of the year in the NL.
That was all on Carlos…what did Shildt do wrong. People complained the other night when Braun hit the grand slam that Carlos wasn’t available. Can’t have it both ways.
He is an exciting rookie that makes things happen and wins games. All that you just wrote is nonsense compared to that. Mike Shildt wished he had 8 like Tommy Edman.
Forsch is 100% wrong about Tommy Edman…he is a starter in our line-up wherever Mike Shildt wants to play him. We are not in 1st place without Tommy Edman. He is our most exciting player.
1. Edman started RF because he can bat from the left side.
2. Edman starts every day somewhere in the line-up.
