GameCard, who of the following would you NOT trade Edman for straight up and why: Josh Donaldson, Kris Bryant, Anthony Rendon, and Justin Turner.
The point is that Edman is not a starting 3Bman on what would be considered a championship caliber team. Your refusal to answer my earlier question just re-enforces that point as far as I am concerned.

Which one of those is playing for major league minimum pay? Actually I would not trade for any of them as they are at the peak and headed down in the next year or two. I want a guy who will be with us for a while.

It seems we all have our opinions. For the most part opinions are like a-holes. We all have one and they all stink. Personally my opinion is that I admire a guy that can play multiple positions equally well. He is of more value to a team than a one position player. That is my OPINION.
I’ve listed the top teams in the league below that I would consider elite/championship caliber, as well as just the likely playoff teams and their 3B.
Yankees – Urshela/Andujar (2, not just 1)
Dodgers – Justin Turner
Astros – Alex Bregman
Braves – Donaldson
Twins – Miguel Sano
A’s – Matt Chapman
Cleveland – Jose Ramirez (hurt now, they might miss WC due to it)
Nats – Rendon
Cubs – Bryant
TB – Diaz (hurt now)
Red Sox – DeversMatt Carpenter in 2018 would be an acceptable comp for this list, but if you think Edman is in the same galaxy of any of the guys listed, then we can all write off your comments and assume that you must be Edman’s dad or uncle or HS coach or something. Edman is not a long term plan for 3B in anyway, shape or form.
My guess, due to the money owed to him is that in spring training, we hear “Matt Carpenter is in the best shape of his life” and “worked on and made tweaks to his swing” etc multiple times.

A team may have a fourth option year on a player with less than five full seasons of professional experience, provided that both conditions below are met.Where in hells bells is all this hatred for Tommy Edman coming from. You jokers are comparing a rookie who only recently came up from the minors to some accomplished (and well paid) players. How many of them play multiple positions in both OF and IF. Carpenter had his time in the limelight and has faded. We have had the likes of Gyorko, Peralta, Carpenter, and others at 3B. They all faded so why not give the rookie a chance to prove himself. His speed and defensive abilities put him above a lot of the names I have seen mentioned and he has a long way to go compared to some of the “grass is greener” guys you mention.
27, did you read the article I linked? The key is the definition of “full seasons”. Do you realize that Shane Robinson was signed (and played minor league ball) in 2007 but his 4th option year was used in 2014?
Minuteman, what does a player’s salary or experience have to do with the argument that the player’s performance is consistent with being a 3B on a championship caliber team?
Why do we have to have an all star at 3B? Why is that position any more important than the others? Heck we only had one “all star” this year and we are in first place with two weeks to go. And the one “all star” we had was a token because every team has to have one. DeJong is solid but vastly over rated in my opinion.
Whether Edman becomes a regular in the future is to be determined but there is no debating that this team would be much much weaker without him. I really don’t think we would be in first place if he hadn’t been called up.
My scenario would for next year would have Edman as a super utility guy for three IF spots and the corner OF spots then in 2021 he might be the everyday 2B depending on what happens with Wong’s option. Let’s sign Moose for 3B next year.
CC, I guess the article is right. When I looked up rules it says 5 years professional experience. I assumed since they are paid in the minors (not much pay though) that would count towards professional experience. And I really don’t understand why the amount of games played in short season ball makes a difference. A season is a season no matter where you play if you are paid.
I wonder if they’ll look harder at trading JMart in the offseason. Ravelo can hit just as well, and is at least an average fielder, and more versatile. Ideal pinch hitting/double switch guy.
Edman is a fine player. He is insurance for Carpenter for sure. But I would not add anyone else to the infield mix until we see how Montero and Gorman progress next year. Which leads me to not understand why Carp was extended. Carp had an option for 2020. Why not worry about exercising it at the end of 2019?
Yes, we have debated the Carp extension numerous times. It didn’t make sense then and still doesn’t. Obviously, Cardinal management didn’t foresee Carp’s production falling off a cliff so they were just wanting to keep him place until Gorman was ready. Turns out it was a mistake.
Unless we can land a big fish like Rendon, I am happy with what the Cards have in Edman, Carp, Sosa, Munoz, Gorman coming
I’d rather go big dor Strasburg or Cole…but if we could pair that with Rendon and let Ozuna fly I would be ok with that, and let Edman play a bit more in the OF
Rendon is a steady bat to go with good defense, even if he never was Arenado I would be more than happy with investing in that kind of player

-trade or sign for multi-positional catcher (Kiner-Falefa, AStudillo, Swihart, Vazquez, Barnes, Romine, etc.) with the added bench player I think this is a huge part of the game as we go forward, 3 catchers one who can switch into the game and stay at positions other than catcher will keep you safe to use both your backup catchers as bench batsJack, Minor, Mik, Hud, Waino/Wood….Reyes, PCD, Gomb, Woodford
Fowler, Wong, Rendon, Goldy, DeJong, Yadi, Bader, Edman(LF)
CMart, Miller, Gallegos, Gant, BRebbia, Junior, Helsley, Webb/Congrani…Hicks
Kiner-Falefa, Wieters, Munoz, Carp, Randy…..Carlson,AdGarcia,Ravelo,SosaGood team
Rendon helps with consistency and thump of offense while upgrading defense too
Minor is lefty on the upswing with a decent contract
Kiner-Falefa is multipositional with pinch running and stealing wheels
Ozuna gone clears room in OF for Carlson and other youngsters we have closer
Waino or Wood provide cheap #5 with some upside but also if they fail don’t inhibit youngsters coming up
Pen is deepbench is super flexible and has enough youth to shuttle guys if necessaryEdman is not an OF. I don’t understand the infatuation with that.
A) He’s not good out there
B) He can’t play CF
C) His bat is worse in a corner OF spot than at 3BI, nor do other supporters of Edman not being a 3B on a top level team, do not have “hatred” toward Edman. He is a very valuable bench piece who can PH or get switched in and add a spark. If Wong leaves after 21, then his bat would be acceptable at 2B as it stands now.
To flip it around, how is a guy with a .314 OBP % and .445 SLG % the second coming of Scott Rolen?
I agree that the Cardinals would be worse off without Edman on the team this year. However, he should be a utility player, not an everyday player. My points earlier about the comparisons between the other teams’ 3Bmen and Edman is that he is a lesser bat than every one of them. I LIKE Edman as a player. He IS a sparkplug. He is NOT an OF. He is NOT a desired starting 3Bman on a championship caliber team.
I would gladly have Edman as the starting 2Bman for the Cardinals, IF they didn’t have Wong. His bat plays much better in that position.

Mike Shildt: Damn right he is. He plays wherever I want him and whenever I need him – OF or IF. I might even try him catching some day. The guy is a regular sparkplug who runs like the wind. He will soon be a player in high demand when he attains veteran status. Bet on it.
