Eleven games to go and the Cardinal lead has shrunk over the past week. To me, this is a must win game for the Redbirds. It is critical that the club at least maintain their current lead over the Brewers and a Cubs headed into the big weekend series in Chicago.

Scherzer is a tough customer. Wainwright has to be “on” for us to grab the rubber game.

It was good that the Reds took care of the Cubs last night. It would be nice to see a repeat today. These game are getting more critical with each day… the Cards have to show us who’s the boss.

Have a good game today. Lay off the dirt balls. Go Cardinals!

Scherzer has a career 2.95 ERA vs the Cards. He wasn’t too sharp in his last outing in his return from the DL. The Cards have to really get to the Nats bullpen at some point in this series. I’ll say today is that day. Scherzer is solid but can’t go deep and the Cards score 5 off the Nationals’ porous pen. Waino parties like it’s 2014 and the Cardinals win it 6-2.

Perhaps it is time for a little informal TCN poll prior to today’s game.

Poll Question: Where do you think the Cards will wind up at the end of the regular season?
    A. Division Champions
    B. Wild Card Team
    C. Out of the Playoffs

Only need to vote A, B, or C.
At this time I am voting C because of lack of offense.

I will go with A. I have been saying since June that this is 1964 revisited, and will stick to my story.

But we need to win a series band get this one. Pitching looks mismatched against us, but the club needs to find a way.

I will go B. We hold off the Crew for the final wild card spot and head to DC to face Mad Max in the wild card game.

Not a bad way to go getting an additional lefty bat in the lineup, although the 2019 Carpenter has not been very good and you sacrifice some defense.

Here is my prediction over the next five games. We lose today and Chicago wins. We go to Chicago and drop the series opener and the two teams are tied for the Central lead. Everyone is talking about how the Cardinals collapsed and folded, with the usual banter of how Mo never does anything and the team needs to be overhauled.

We then fool everyone by winning the final three in Wrigley, and go from there to win the division by 5 games as both Chicago and Milwaukee go in to a funk in the final week.

    Then the hard part starts….

A ——–I’m rooting my rear end off for the title. I hate those play-in games. We need Carpenter and DeJong to pick it up. Bader looks lost again and may have lost some confidence at the plate. The starters have been consistently good.

Not disappointed with Bader sitting. Maybe bring in late for defense. But I don’t understand putting a weak bat (Carpenter) at #5 to replace a weak bat who is moved to #7. Carp should be a #8 at best. In case he gets a hit, Wainwright can drive him in.

BikeMike – I like your positivity. Wish I had that.

I would not bet a penny on this because baseball is so difficult to predict over the short term. But just for kicks, I would guess B (wildcard). To not make the playoffs, all three (Nats, cubs, Brewers) will need to pass the Cards, because I’m discounting the other teams not yet eliminated.

That’s the good part. The bad part is I don’t think there’s enough offense to win the division. The Cards look foolish all too often at the plate and wouldn’t know plate discipline/situational hitting if it kicked ’em in the family jewels. Add to that a cracking bull pen and some recent untimely defensive lapses, I see a bad trend and the Cards getting passed for the division title.

So now that I’ve said that, you know what’s NOT happening. Bet on either the Cards to win the division or completely miss out.

Nats fail to score in the 1st.

I’ll miss most of this as I will be at the Amish restaurant having my late lunch today. Hope they have sweet potatoes today. Or at least baked carrots. Yum Yum.

We’re not even out of the 2nd inning and two balls hit right to Carp have been fielded by Ozuna. Thankfully Edman has saved us from a lot of Carp misery and he does it again in RF, this time by throwing out Robles at the plate to end the inning. Robles was the guy who got on base by shooting a grounder through Carp’s legs.

Shildt should try watching a game on TV, that way he could see that Carp is not mentally prepared to be on a big league diamond right now. The dugout must be blinding him.
